This is my movie review for Terrifier 2 and it will contain spoilers throughout!
The film starts off immediately from where Part 1 ended. Art the clown gruesomely murders the mortician from the ending of the previous film with a hammer. It is apparent that Art now has some type of supernatural ability to resurrect from the dead and can see a young, pale girl who for the time being is only visible in his eyes as like a ghostly figure.
During the pre credits sequence a new character teenager Sienna is introduced and is in the process of making a Halloween costume for an upcoming party. Shortly after her younger brother and their short tempered mother Barbara.
Sienna and Jonathan's father has died and rumour has it that it was by suicide. The subject is not really discussed however the father had illustrated many thoughts and feelings via pictures in a book, that clearly have meaning to them.
Sienna has a nightmare about Art the clown in a cafe and she is also in that nightmare while she witnesses Art massacre a group of people. At the end she wakes up to her costume engulfed in flames.
At school Sienna meets up with her friends Allie and Brooke to express her worries about Art and reports on him being a serial killer. Allie takes her seriously although Brooke is more dismissive. Art is also well on his way with his mean spirited killings. Around the same time Jonathan is scalded by his teacher after being accused of killing a possum, resulting in his suspension from school.
Halloween night arrives and whilst Jonathan has been grounded, Barbara has given Sienna permission to attend a party with her friends. Art goes trick or treating and knocks at the door of Allie's house. She initially and flippantly refuses Art candy due to him being an adult, after some persistence from Art, Allie throws candy at him.
Soon after Art finds a way to break into Allie's house and after Allie discovers him in the kitchen a short chase scene up to a bedroom leads to a particularly nasty, relentless and painful encounter for Allie. In the films most discussed scene Allie's death sequence of torture and brutality lasts several minutes before her dying body is discovered by her mother who is also dispatched shortly after her ordeal.
Barbara is in much distress and after what she thinks is a revenge prank by Jonathan on her car is killed by Art with a shotgun. Sienna is at a party with Brooke and Jeff and ends up unwillingly getting high which makes her paranoid, Jonathan is kidnapped and taken to a nearby carnival. Sienna, Brooke and Jeff go to the carnival to investigate.
After Sienna goes searching for Jonathan it is not long before Jeff is killed and Brooke is attacked before Art follows her inside the carnival and she is violently and graphically murdered in the second most memorable death scene.
Soon after Sienna finds Brooke's lifeless body and then a long lasting fight and confrontation ensues between her, and Jonathan. For much of this time Art has the upper hand although Sienna becomes a formidable enemy. After Sienna protects Jonathan and finally defeats Art the pale girl appears.
During the end credits sequence an additional scene has Victoria, the survivor of the previous movie in a psychiatric hospital which finishes on a insane note.
Firstly I enjoyed the music and 80's style and influenced soundtrack within the film. I also thought the use of the film's practical effects were done as well as could be expected for the film's budget. I also thought that even though the films running time was considerably longer than most horror films it worked well for character development and the storyline.
The main down side was even despite Art's increased screen time there were unanswered questions about him, his origins and why he specifically targeted Sienna's family. I would have liked Felissa Rose's character to have had more scenes and am wondering what will now happen to Victoria!
Now that the film has had unprecedented commercial and financial success will the makers strike while the iron is hot and produce Terrifier 3 quickly in the next couple of years or will they take more time to make the next film even bigger and better! Either way I shall be waiting and looking forward to what arrives next.
I would rate this film 7.5 out of 10.
