Please Hold (2020)
Wow
The power and velocity with which Please Hold affected me was truly amazing. It triggered a near immediate empathetically emotional response. This short made me feel so anxious and twisted up that I'm still sitting here in a daze while writing this; thank goodness it was only 19 minutes, any more and I'm not sure I could've handled it.
There is little wonder Please Hold is being talked about for awards. Every aspect was excellent, save perhaps the "soft" ending. A thoughtful comment on the present state and trajectory of our prison/justice system, Please Hold is a dystopian postmodern day societal horror story worth viewing. Viewers should be advised to watch at their own risk.
Postscript (since we're on the topic) - It's time to END for profit prisons. One would think this is an obvious error for a modern civilization to stumble into; But here we are, building one after another. For profit prisons can only make money by keeping people locked up. The more prisoners, the more tax dollars that are allocated to that prison. In order to stay "in the black", a for profit prison must continuously stay plus 3/4 full. Minor infractions become months to years tacked on to an inmate's time. Call your government representatives and tell them where you'd prefer your tax dollars be spent. It would be better to spend our tax revenue on just about anything else other than attempting to change Please Hold from fiction to reality.
Special (2006)
Not a comedy
Not even close. Nothing about it even brings a smile. It is depressing though, so it has that going for it. Does he have powers? It doesn't really matter because the "story" goes nowhere.
Creamerie (2021)
Not good enough
Love dark comedy. And Oz can make solid entertainment in this capacity; Mr Inbetween is proof positive of this. However, Creamerie is just not good enough. It seemed to have an opportunity to make something fun but they fumbled it. Doesn't belong in the "comedy" section. More of a light drama.
Virtual Revolution (2016)
I wanted to like it
Potential but ultimately falls short. Crisp CG isn't enough to keep this moving. Stiff dialogue occurs in many scenes that are often far too drawn out. This made keeping engaged with the show very trying. Ultimately, I found it to be draggin like Smaug.
Tropical Cop Tales (2018)
Yeesh
If you think perpetual yelling while saying 'tropical' as much as humanly possible passes for humor, this garbage is for you.
World's Greatest Dad (2009)
Just no
Not a comedy. Awkward tension never gives way. Not a broken story, just a bad one.
On the Basis of Sex (2018)
She deserves better
For such an amazing person with such a storied career, this movie focuses only on her first case. While this is of course important to who she is and would become, the plot points herein could have been summed up in about 25 minutes. 2 hours later we were left disappointed with what could have been. Overall acting passes muster and cinematography never interrupts the snail's pace storytelling. It's not a broken picture, just a very weak one. 4 stars and a single tear for the Supreme Court Justice that every American can name.
Paterno (2018)
A difficult watch
With Levinson at the helm, Pacino delivers a solid performance. However, the horror of these events are difficult to bare for 105 minutes. Prepare to emotionally bounce between shock, sorrow, fury, and angst for the duration. Though one may be by and large against capital punishment, watching this can warrant a desire to throw a rope over the nearest tree for the perpetrator(s).
Before I Fall (2017)
Depressingly terrible
These ladies are much better at their craft than this movie allows. Terrible script, plot, and no discernible message lies within. With infinite opportunities to better herself and those around her, our protagonist (a non-redemptive mean girl) gets absolutely nothing accomplished aside from depressing and irritating the audience. If you like this kind of temporal loop style story idea (waking up to the same day ad infinitum) as I do, save yourself the anguish and spend it (re)watching Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow.
