The Dinner (I) (2017)
1/10
Might be the worst movie of 2017
21 June 2017
Its been long time since I have seen such a bad movie. For some strange reason the movie decides to delay its plot till half way but even after that it loses its steam in next 10 minutes, for the simple reason that that there are only two solutions and no one would budge from their stand. There is no clear structure and fillers were off-putting like that of a chef who must have appeared 5 times and whose only job was to tell about ingredients of servings. All the lead cast took weird acting decisions but its the loud acting from Steve Coogan that pinches most. For someone who is still inclined I would suggest to start from second half

Best Indian movie in romance genre
8 October 2016
Its been 15 years and now that they are releasing a sequel I am trying to recall the number of times I have seen the original. Today I can say its the best romantic genre movie from India. Half of bollywood movies are on love genre and so it was hard to say Tum Bin as best, after all we have had 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa', 'Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein', 'Baato Baato Mein' etc. However Tum Bin is distinct for its simplicity, you see broken characters and you feel equally helpless. Someone who has seen 'The Hunt' will get my point. Music is still refreshing , if you understand Hindi you will appreciate beauty of Jagjeet Singh's lyrics. Tum Bin has no subplots, story is linear, characters come in and out, no fancy edits, just pure story telling making you root for lead pair. By the end I felt I saw some good, not great movie, but today I feel it has grown on me.

Phobia (I) (2016)
8/10
Genuine horror from India
11 August 2016
This is how I wanted room to be - based entirely within four walls, but that movie broke its rule and went 'Money Monster' way; moving out and then just staying in limbo.

Indian horror movies normally bring out unintentional laughs, but this was first Indian movie that got me scared. I am not talking of couple of jump scares, but genuine ones during key build ups and after and Ms. Apte sells them. She starts as a whiny and week woman but slowly succeeds in selling her fear and eventually caring about her. But more than that I was in love with its editing and bold choices it made of avoiding clichés. The story is tight, fast paced and believable; and without that irritation you get when you see plot holes in horror movies. The good thing about Phobia was it did not use props and relied on simple and obvious solutions like for example tying herself to move out of house. Here's hoping to see more of such cinema in near future and less of over hyped Conjuring 2.

Ginger & Rosa (2012)
7/10
There shouldn't be a Rosa in title
17 May 2013
This is my first review, and I am writing coz of less number of reviews and voting for this film. Saw it last night, and must say my patience was tested in first half of movie, after that it became a compelling drama. Potter establishes her characters well, and we get a good insight of characters. I like how she open and closes movie with same scene but different scenarios, and wrapping it up nicely.

The cinematography and background score were apt to the era of 60s, but they made movie look sluggish and this is where the problem lied. Second half is where things pick up, and Ginger realize that along with saving world, she also needs to deal with crisis happening in her world. Elle Fanning is a young actress, and gives a lot of facial expressions, like her sister, but she also infuses life to Ginger. I give it 7.
