The Only Way Is Essex (2010)
Unintentionally amazing.
I'm here to defend this programme. I consider myself to be a somewhat intellectual and thus by all reasoning should detest this programme. But I still watch it every week and every week it makes me laugh. I never try and feel for the characters or become particularly involved in their story lines, but it's a great programme for 'people watching'. If you take into account the fact that they all must have some idea of what they're doing and they are definitely aware the cameras are there, you notice that all of them react in different ways. And despite that, it's also good if you enjoy watching fairly stupid people do and say fairly stupid things. If you are looking for an award winning fly on the wall documentary then i advise you to... well, just give up and definitely don't watch this. If you're looking for something light hearted which has the potential to pull in a lot of viewers depending on how you watch it, then TOWIE is for you.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Anima...zing
It's often a worry for fans when a T.V. series, animated or not, decides to make a feature length film. The types of stories you can tell vary between 22 minutes and 81. But if anyone has ever succeeded at this then it's Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The film is definitely better if you properly know the first couple of seasons of South Park as the amount of references is staggering. Having said that the first time i saw this was when i was about 10. It may have been the TV premiere over here in the UK. But i was laughing so hard by the end, which is impressive considering how many of the dirty jokes I wouldn't have gotten. Since then I must have watched this movie over 50 times and laughed every time. The story is incredibly well told and the characters are 'super sweet'. What is also nice about this film is that not only is there no particular 'bad guy', just a series of connected events and you can clearly see each character's motives whilst the film remains hilarious throughout. It has even stood the test of time and after 12 years it is still just as funny every time i watch it. And it's also worth pointing out what a great job the entire cast, though particularly Matt and Trey, do with regard the voice acting. Just go and watch it! Unless you're offended by the entire planet you live on. In fact, even then.
Religulous (2008)
Simply Amazing.
I just finished watching Religulous. This is without a doubt one of the best documentaries I have ever seen and I expect I ever will see. Now,I'm not going to go into too much detail as I'd rather let you experience it for yourself, but Bill Maher is funny, intelligent and charming as a voice of reason in a vast land of religion which is far crazier than we as a world, atheist or otherwise, are prepared to admit. He makes some beautifully made arguments and points and is unbiased to anything besides rationalism. Despite the religious element it is also very funny and makes great use of on screen captions. But what is nice is that the humorous element never gets in the way of the fact that this is still a documentary. Also, it is brilliantly directed by comedic heavyweight Larry Charles and the use of archive footage is really the cherry on the cake. So to put is fairly briefly, if you are open minded and rationalistic and want to see a well made, witty, smart documentary that really makes you think, go watch this.
