Billy the Kid (2022– )
6/10
A decent romantic drama
22 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've just discovered that series, attracted initially by the "by the makers of Vikings", a series I enjoyed quite a bit (even though like all long-running series, seasons past 4 or 5 lose their edge).

Overall, cinematography, acting and scenario are great, dialogues are good but not amazing, it's still quite enjoyable to watch. A good rendition of the Billy the Kid story, we can't get enough of those outlaws mythical stories and feuds, horse riding à la Western, those classic landscapes, shootings, etc. Interestingly, the latters involve kids and women too, which you'd rarely see on anything made in USA that's for sure.

I would have given a higher note but for a few things. The main one being, too many clichés, it's not an American show, yet there's quite a bit going on. We find just another story of the poor anti-hero who didn't choose to become a criminal but is very good-looking, has all the girls and who's heart is so pure, blah blah blah. Also, I would have appreciated a little more meat around the hero's relationships, he's suddenly best pal with people who appeared on the screen for a few minutes with a few lines of dialogue... And actually, not much to savour in terms of dialogues, a bit bland, and not nearly as much done as could have been considering the number of scenes with high potential for tension (poker games, duels, love stories, stealing, racism, etc.). Finally, the straw that broke the camel's back, even though seemingly coherent with the myth, the figure of the good Englishman becoming the saviour of Lincoln County, allying with an Irishman who's parents left their country because of the famine (in a word "British rule"), and that without a bit of remorse or hesitation on Billy's part? He does hesitate to give up his crew, but not for an instant pictures the Englishman as anything but an honest angel. Even though the man's first line sounds something like: "I'm not here to exploit the farmers but to do honest business, although I want to get as much as possible for as cheap as possible and I don't care cos' I'm already filthy rich."

Anyway, I'd still recommend the show as light entertainment, but as per usual the historical accuracy as well as the depth of the story and characters is kind of lost here. But hey, it's a TV series what should we expect? Well, still better than Hollywood, but could do better in terms of details, finesse and tension building...

Billions: Enemies List (2023)
Season 7, Episode 10
10/10
Billions at its best
15 October 2023
Honestly, I felt since Axe had left in season 5 the show was struggling to get back to this kind of quality... But these past few episodes have been absolutely brilliant, the writing is impeccable, rhythm, intrigue, acting, humour, social commentary, everything is there!

What I love about Billions is how accurately it depicts the zeitgeist and the propensity of modern capitalism to feed greed, lust and love of power while at the same time eating people's soul and making even the lucky few actually sad and miserable. Being at the top isn't success when it means plodding away with filthy businesses...

Billions is one of my favourite shows and this episode is definitely up there with the greats I'll revisit often with pleasure!

Hopefully, the season's final episodes will meet the high expectations set since episode one... We know Prince is going down, how though? And who will get down with him. I'm personally worried about Sacker, though her character's complexity makes her a decisive element, it seems her soul has departed never to come back.

Irma Vep (2022)
9/10
Not meant to be pure entertainment
27 July 2022
I found this series really great for a number of reasons. The only thing I would say against it is that they could have turned it up one more notch towards the experimentally insane (then it'd be a 10)... I'd assume bad reviews are probably coming from boring people too lazy to discover something (even slightly) different, and for whom being curious is an effort. Amazing series!

Others make a better job of telling you about the plot, so what I found most interesting is a different approach of story-telling where "reality" is displayed in layers, each lighting the subjects from a different perspective. Even though it might appear slow at times (I'd call it poetic, "léché" or sensual), the content is actually super rich and hints at questions such as the use of art, insanity, purposes of cinema, stardom, being "normal", being yourself, following instincts, spirituality and spirits, limits and chance, passion, etc.

Alicia Vikander is just phenomenal in this role, showing her multiple abilities, from funny to tragic, pathetic to joyful and whimsical, always spot on in separating her multiple personas and making them fit with the scene/characters, as well as continually evolving her self(ves). I am really fond of her and I think in this series, through Irma Vep and Mira, she showcases truthfulness, doubt, fear and pain beautifully. Surrounded by excellent actors and well directed, Alicia really shines as much as she lets other's light come through.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend it if you are curious, like to go down rabbit-holes of weird thoughts, interested in cinema and what it is (or was) trying to show us. This is not meant to be pure entertainment but works with meta levels, playing between genres, periods, philosophies, mediums... Bridging the gap between cinema and tv brilliantly and bringing some originality to the table (even though that's a remake already), Irma Vep was a breath of fresh air, a parenthesis of innovation, and just a fun overall watch, both light and deeply mysterious...

Swiss-Spain can be good!
25 October 2010
A promising first film from a very unusual collective of directors, Olpama, consisting of three directors who met during their studies in Barcelona. The fact that the language used is Spanish and that two Spanish directors and a Swiss one worked together, alone helps giving a unique character to the film. Said to be inspired by directors like Terry Gillian, Emir Kusturica and Orson Wells among others, the result is a magnificent film set in Francoist Spain. The use of black and white emphasises contrast and adds a tragic, serious aspect to the story, contributing to distinguish the film from mainstream, while still very accessible because of its humour. A few passages in bright, impressionist colours furthers the individuality of the picture. The moving main actors, old and marked by time, reflecting on their past, their decisions and their odd paths bring sympathy to the viewer immediately. "Lo mas importante..." is a film for everyone, far from simplistic in its making it still passes as good entertainment, avoiding the trap of heaviness and shabbiness. A true dedication from the cast and the directors to whom it took three years to accomplish. I attended the preview in Geneva and was conquered by the imaginativeness of the makers and realism emanating from the actors. Ingenious ways of using the camera, from wide angles and close-ups to movements keep the spectator on his toes all the way through! In conclusion, I recommend strongly to support this small budget film which can stand proudly in its field, away from blockbusters, proving once again that good ideas, invention and genius can easily replace big stacks of money in the show-business! A unique experience that will touch you, make you laugh, reflect while trying to unknot the many strings (piano strings?) it holds...
