So Bad, It's Good, but Could've Been Great.
2 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I really enjoyed this one. But only half as much as the first.

The Good: Basically it's so funny and heartwarming where it needs to be that all the problems don't matter. Moments of grief and happiness, love and and revenge is what made it worth while.

There's a moment where Tree realizes she's being selfish and she makes a difficult sacrifice, showing her continuing growth as a person. Loved it.

The Bad: Yes, none of the science makes sense. The loop in part one was better when it was a supernatural/cosmic phenomenon that couldn't be explained. The Sissy machine was cool but left us with more unanswered questions. Especially when it stops being about Ryan and reverts back to Tree. Why? Then they introduce the multiverse, creating even more unanswered questions. Messy.

The Ugly: HDD2U it tied together a perfect connection to part one that I did t expect, with an expanded cast of characters and scenarios that prove a sequel is supposed to be bigger than the original. Unfortunately, there's a missed opportunity to show someone else go through this horrible day.

Rarely do you get a "perfect" sequel but this is an exceptional one that is really enjoyable, so long as you turn off your brain.

It Grows on You

At first, the trailer was off-putting. I had no intention of watching this show but I couldn't sleep one night and now I'm halfway through the first season. I got reeled in somehow. Maybe because it's pretty great.

There is something about the cast that really grabbed me. Cedric and Max Greenfield are a given, I knew they would be entertaining. Yet for me, its the ladies that hold it down. Watching Tichina Arnold's and Beth Behrs' natural chemistry is very refreshing.

I'm not a fan of forced racial and stereotype jokes. Many of them could be left out and the show wouldn't lose any of its flare. Like White folks who cook without spice... Stop it. But there are many situations in this situation comedy that need to be addressed and the writers pull it off well. Like the clueless white guy in the Black barbershop but is welcomed with open arms... well done. The best parts of the show is when everyone's differences is painted in a honest but positive light.

Give the show a chance and you'll be surprised how funny it really is.

Knee slaps and heart strings
16 October 2022
I'm not the most enthusiastic person when it comes to sequels, especially third installments but this one was a decent send off that did its job.

Clerks III isn't incredibly funny, not like the first, hell no, it will never be the first but hearkens back to the great moments that we all love and that's okay with me. The best part is how much of soul Kevin Smith put into this one. Almost everything that I've heard about the film remains true. It's a nostalgic piece of work that will pull on your heart and break you in the end. There won't be a dry eye in the room.

Kudos to the wonderful cast for pulling off a great performance.

A Breath of Fresh Air

I really enjoyed watching this show.

I read the comic but thoroughly feel like the first episode was more entertaining. That said, Iman Vellani shines through, showing that she really loves what she's doing and is actually a fan of the source material.

The show is visually impressive with all of the art and animation going on around it. I love that there is life to everything around the characters, making the environment of Jersey City as another character. This is very Spider-man-ish whereas New York is a character to him.

To the grown-up haters I say, "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it".

I Want More!
27 April 2022
I was aimlessly browsing through the streaming apps for something new or different and somehow landed on this show. Although comedies based on the afterlife or sci-fi are a big draw for me, I've been disappointed many times.

Upload does not disappoint.

It's absolutely refreshing. The characters, even the villains and obnoxious sidekicks are all enjoyable to watch. Robbie Amell does a fantastic job with the comedic timing and dramatic scenes. In fact, I'll dare say it's one of his best roles. This is my first time watching Andy Allo and I became an instant fan. Her character is a perfect blend of dry wit, intelligence and kindness.

Their chemistry is genuine and I'm here for it.

I sat down expecting to giggle through two episodes last night and binged the first season instead. Keep it coming guys, well done!

How did they mess this up?
4 January 2022
Everyone talks about how bad the animation is... lets talk about the story.

It's called Project Icarus. Well that's original.

Mom says, "Poisonous gas, razor sharp rocks, rivers of lava..." So she takes her son there?!

In fact, all the adults at this facility have a child on board, each of distinct ethnic backgrounds. The big tough black guy is security, the tiny asian lady is the boss, so naturally they have a loud-mouth Black kid, a cool girl love interest, the nerdy girl, etc. Etc. (Face palm)

This is remedial writing at its worst. Nothing new or different. What made the original HTTYD movies and series so special is hard to sum up in one review, but this follow up series definitely didn't hit the mark. They're trying to hit all the diversity checkboxes but struggled to make it make sense.

My kids and I sat through all the films and the series together but I'm not even going to tell them this came out. Can't risk them damaging brain cells.

This won't survive.

Warning: Spoilers
I wanted this to work. I really did. I was excited when I first heard a movie was being made, but that didn't pan out. A series was definitely the way to go because it would give this story room to explore rich character history. So... Why are these characters so bloody dumb?

Billions of men are dying in front of their eyes and the leader of the free world never thinks to call her son? We know his phone works, he used it several times. He was watching videos of his girlfriend on it. In fact, nobody calls this man; not his sister, girlfriend, none. And he certainly doesn't call them.

Televisions and internet still work in week one.

Nobody is sending out messages, texts, nothing.

Then Yorick encounters a trio of women who haven't seen a man in nearly a month but instead of being happy, asking questions, turn him in, something normal, they threaten to shoot the guy. I would think they would want him alive.

Everyone is just plain stupid.

This, like the men... won't survive.

Chaos Walking (2021)

Sunday Afternoon
7 April 2021
Sometimes I like a good flick that I can turn on Sunday afternoon and rest my mind to. Chaos Walking has all the right ingredients. Great cast, interesting concept and forward moving plot. Tom Holland's character arc was just enough to keep me invested. He's flawed, friendly, brave but confused. He also kept me smiling with every noisy interaction to Daisy Ridley's calm persona.

So what went wrong? It's hard to say.

I can understand why some reviews would say this one waas dull or boring but I completely disagree with them. It's not high impact and there isn't a lot of deep thinking involved, well, at least not from the audience.

While it starts off weird and annoying, the film grew on me and I wanted to see it through. No big plot twists, nothing woke or preachy. It's a simple film that could've worked well direct to TV and I'm okay with that.

Unhinged (I) (2020)

Chaotic, in a good way
21 October 2020
The Good: If you're looking for a popcorn film to fill your Friday night, this will do the trick. It reminded me of those campy 90's thrillers like Fear (Wahlberg), Double Jeopardy, and Conspiracy Theory but set today. They didn't skimp on the gore or the action, so I was delightfully surprised how brutal it did got. If you're like me, the best parts will have you saying, "Damn, didn't see that coming?"

The Bad: Sadly that's also what you'll say from the worst parts of the film. The mother makes the worst decisions. She's basically a nasty person, and in some cases, down right stupid. But that's the point I guess. Sadly it's not as memorable as the some thrillers might be. It's a good time killer and made for few jumpy people who are not used to these films. Today's teens will dig it.

The Ugly: I didn't expect an award winning performance from anyone in this madness but Russel Crowe did the best he could do with what he was given. The man delivers at every scene and refused to dial it in. The young actor playing the son is little stiff, but bless his heart is he genuinely smarter than the adults here. As I say about most films, don't pick it apart or you'll be very disappointed. Go in blind and just enjoy the chaos.

Hellboy (2019)

Great Star, Gets Lost Somewhere.
14 July 2019
There are some really entertaining elements in this film. So many spot-on adapations from the books that put a smile on my face. David Harbour looks amazing in this and his voice is great. But that's pretty much where it ends. The cast, amazing as they are, didn't seem to know what this was. I expected so much more from the names and faces that are on this cast list. Disappointing.

As for story, it was all over the place. So many great moments that was terribly rushed and underdeveloped, they could have explored these environments and characters a lot more if this one movie was stretched out into a trilogy.

That said, I feel like they should try again, right where they left off with this one. BUT as a limited series. Keep Harbour on the rest of the cast on tap to do 6 - 10 episodes in a "villain-of-the-week" type of thing with one on-going subplot. Supernatural, Lucifer, Buffy, Angel, and Stranger Things pulled it off. Why not Hellboy?

What more do you need?
30 September 2018
I came upon this film early morning. I've been a fan of Kiersey Clemons since the film Dope and the music in that was great so I said, why not. I am so glad I did. Hearts Beat Loud is a simple, yet sweet tale of the family dynamic between and single father and his daughter with a 15 mins of fame feel to it. In an age where everyone is a soundcloud superstar, I feel like this film keeps the characters grounded in a smaller and friendlier atmosphere. Kiersey's voice is just lovely on the original songs by Keegan Dewitt, Nick Offerman is just the right kind of everyman, Toni Collette is delightful and watching Ted Danson run a bar.... priceless.
