Space Station 76 (2014)
Look Deeper
If you're looking for Spaceballs, Galaxy Quest or another wacky sci-fi comedy you're likely to be disappointed. I really enjoyed this movie because the comedy centers around deeper unresolved issues that each of the characters exhibit. In my opinion those more "experienced" with the darker side of the human psyche and unresolved issues will "grok" this film.
I'm not surprised that most people won't "get it" so here's a hint when you're watching the film; watch the film from the writers perspective. Some questions to ask yourself: Who is the main character? Who is the child that grew up in the 70's that imagined living on a space station? Whose life experience is unfolding as you watch?
Since I have to meet the review minimum lines I'll like up a cigarette, finish my drink and add: I still love you and think about you every day Dr. Bot :)
Reptilicus (1961)
A gob of fun!
If you're a fan of 50's-60's B budget movies, you're gonna love this one. The comedy is as delightful as the 60's babes. It's a cult classic for a reason folks, and you can't fault the camera work-at least it's not all shaky-cam and lens flares like some modern flicks :) The Copenhagen tour, the "Tivoli Night" song, the sandwich under the microscope and a puppet monster-what's not to love? Having to write ten lines to post I'll ramble on needlessly. One of the reasons I love the old sci-fi B-flicks is the innocence of the age...science was magic, the world was huge and space was an unknown. The symbolism of society's concerns in these older movies is also important.
U.F.O. (2012)
An entertaining B sci-fi flick and worth the watch...
I enjoyed this movie and thought it was fun. I didn't have high expectations so I wasn't disappointed. If 7/10 is a C then this passed for a bizarre bit of fun. I enjoyed Alien Uprising more than Gravity, at least this movie wasn't full of bad physics. This is just a silly story that's meant to be action packed and fun. There are plenty of clues. I don't understand why it's getting such low ratings... Perhaps because the film has a little imagination and requires a bit to appreciate the story. The acting was passable and the story was interesting, the action keeps a good pace. Of course you have to be willing to suspend disbelief but if you're a sci-fi B movie buff I think you'll enjoy it.
Dangerous Flights (2012)
How far would you go?
Dangerous Flights is a fascinating series. The camera work is decent, editing/writing is typical reality TV style. Some have expressed the aircraft engine sound overlay mismatch for engine type detracts from the show. I fear this series may come to an abrupt end.
In the DF series Cory -a former used car salesman, tries his luck at selling "Certified Used" airplanes. But will it pay off? How far are pilots willing to go to deliver the goods?
You may pass a solo flight test but could you pass the business management/sales test?
I don't have the right stuff to be a salesman/businessman.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Forgettable bad sci-fi. Not Trek, meh.
This second Abrams film continues the new paradigm of boldly taking bad science to new frontiers that it's never been before in the Star Trek universe. A forgettable story is Abrams scaffold for lens flares, handycams and special effects sold to investors based upon the number of explosions per 10 minute interval. The contrived special effects made no sense in the context of surrounding volcanic, ocean bottom and weightless environments sure to astound the kiddies.
Being a fan of the original ST, of course I don't like to see what is happening as Paramount fracks the Star Trek universe to exploit the last drop of crude action potential while ignoring the sustainable and more abundant imaginative philosophical and scientific wonder-story potential Roddenberry/Fontana used to build the first Star Trek universe. Instead of creating, Paramount and Abrams simply rob from the dead. The director was doubtless chosen by Paramount for the Franchise because Abrams would focused on the unimaginative target anti-science audience market segment that knows nothing of Newtons laws.
The absurd parallel universe created in the first Abrams ST film had an opportunity to boldly go to new places and confront philosophical issues as Roddenberry did. The broken cliché alternate universe time paradox "deus ex machina" places the youthful good actors in likable characters in a universe in which they don't belong. The priority was to call on market maker tags such as Kahn, tribbles, and Klingons that identify the film with the Star Trek franchise and tap a new market for old productions to enhance DVD sales/rental revenues.
The acting wasn't a failure. The story was.
Collision Course (2012)
Do not be alarmed it is not your TV set....
I gave "Collision Course" a two because it's awful good seeing such a bad movie every once in a while. But this movie wasn't quite bad enough to earn a cult following mainly because of the lead role played by the dog.
Besides another SyFy "original", what do you get when melodrama, cliché dialog, poor direction, bad science and poor acting collide? Collision Course movie disaster apocalypse...the only thing missing is turning the pilot into a zombie which I substituted in my wandering imagination for the evil dog Bootsie...that turned out to be a good doggie after all. Professional acting on the part of Bootsie was refreshing but his German accent needs some work. Even Asylum's Sharknado was destined to miss the cult mark as some of the acting was too good, and although Sharknado science was bad enough to earn a shock and awe score Asylum is still having trouble hitting the cult mark.
Somehow the Collision Course writers missed the low standard mark in writing worst Airplane disaster disaster ever, which is still held by "Starflight: The Plane that Couldn't Land (1983)" which starred Lee Majors.
Perhaps the writers of Collision Course shamelessly turned to Mel Brooks for inspiration, afraid of direct ties to other air disaster disaster movies staring John Wayne and Charlton Heston. I must admit the natural and instinctual reaction to take charge and discuss personal histories with strangers when the autopilot fails is well developed. Although the protagonist was married to a pilot at one time is convenient, I think she would have better flying credentials had she stayed at a Holiday Inn.
Although ScyFy may yet someday achieve the apparent goal of productions that merit true cult status for being awful, they need to study Troll:II.
"Collision Course" only earns an "of course" in the predictable bad science "deus ex machina" department. Still you may be able to scratch your head and smile at the bravado of writers who sell for mass consumption to a market that actually believes in ghosts, ancient aliens and UFO's. I won't spoil the end which will come as a real surprise, although I would have ended the drama at the first mid-air collision and simply rolled credits, leaving room for a Part Deux.
There is hope for this movie. No future species that decodes the remnants of this movie on a Venus like planet will wonder why our species became extinct. Therefore this title rates as candidate for sharing on a "Bad Movie" or "Disaster Disaster" movie night with some friends or a cat who can fill in the awkward dialog.
Dark Space (2013)
A fun B flick
A fun "Campy" low budget B sci-fi flick reminiscent of classic B sci-fi movies appealing to youth such as the original "Blob" and other films of the 50's-70's
Young people will find this fun because it's fun watching other young people do dumb things and the foreshadowing is within reach of a teen.
This is a better movie than many "A" Studio sci-fi flicks and "bad science" is forgivable in B movies if they're fun.
Considering the low budget the effects were well done... Good direction, adequate acting.
Refreshingly politically INcorrect. Even more refreshing are people who are upset by this aspect of the movie. har har har.
Sexy Evil Genius (2013)
Witty, fun and imaginative.
"Sexy Evil Genius" is a Comedy/Drama with snappy dialog that moves quickly from scene to scene and keeps one guessing as to the what led up to the opening moments of the film. If you don't like movies that depend on dialog skip this one. It's a fun story and I was entertained throughout. There are some deeper elements to the plot; look for them. The acting was above average to my untrained eye. The directing and editing was well done and the cinematography/lighting were excellent. The audio mixing was clear, and the score a subtle character. I gave the film an 8/10 as it was thoroughly enjoyable and above an average(good) 7.
