A combo of faith, family, and football is unbeatable!
5 September 2023
Football season is here and you will love watching this series! "God. Family. Football" features Evangel Christian Academy football team with Coach Denny Duron.

High School football is ranked right up with college or pro football in many communities and you will see that camaraderie and sense of family when you watch this docu-series. After having the worst season in their history, the return of legendary Coach/Pastor Denny Duran brings a new hope to the boys as he molds them into outstanding young men... and football players. His motto of, "God first, family second, and football third" is a winning strategy makes an impact that influences the players, and will make a difference in their lives.

The background stories and honesty as the viewer gets to know the boys draws you in to the series, and some football action added leads to an interesting series the whole family can enjoy.

Denver Broncos Quarterback Russell Wilson is the executive producer of the series.

Horribly fake accents...
28 July 2022
I realize that many of the actors are from northern states and Canada, but apparently none of them are proficient in accents. At least, not Southern accents. But, I decided to try watching anyway.

Cute concept, but an abject failure when it came to story lines and characters. There are too many flaws to recommend this movie to anyone.

Family Camp
13 May 2022
Family Camp is a hilarious film... but also with a message that will touch hearts.

The Skit Guys, Tommy and Eddie, are well-known in Christian communities for their skits and live events, but this is their first feature film. They brought in a great supporting cast who were wonderful in their roles. I was satisfied with the film and truly enjoyed it.

Writer/Director Brian Cates and co-writer Rene Gutteridge grasped the humor of The Skit Guys comedy and added their touches of humor to provide a funny and wholesome film that a family can enjoy without concern. I recommend it as a fun movie night with family or friends.

Poignant moments, but a fun film to watch
6 August 2021
I enjoyed the film. The well-known actors gave solid performances and I thought the rest of the cast performed well. To be honest, I read the book several years ago and liked it, but didn't love it; something seemed to be missing for me. The actors put flesh on the characters and brought them to life in a most satisfactory way. I was able to fill more emotionally attached. There were poignant moments but the movie stayed mostly lighthearted. There were also a few examples of turning the bad into something beautiful that appealed to me.

The soundtrack is great! I was 12 in 1967, so many memories were stirred via the music, fashion, and more included in the film. It takes place during a turbulent time in American history and has sad elements, but it was also a kinder, more simple time. The laughter, in the film and from the viewers, remind us that it's possible to keep finding joy despite heartache and misunderstandings. But the final message all should receive is the importance of family and forgiveness and the need for faith to sustain us. This is definitely a "popcorn movie" to enjoy with friends, but I believe it's worth seeing. Check it out!

Healing River (2020)

Compelling story of forgiveness and healing
29 August 2020
Healing River is a deep and powerful movie about grief, rebellion, guilt, forgiveness, and healing. The pace of the film allowed the story to be told fully without a lot of "filler" material. The actors gave their characters life... the authentic emotions that were displayed let the viewers believe the story. Bits of humor that were used like a release valve when the tensions mounted were unexpected and welcome. There was some mild language and the subject matter is too intense for children, but I highly recommend "Healing River" for teens and up. The film is a good lesson about the dangers of drug use, but it's also a lesson to all about the power of forgiveness and healing. Writer/Director Mitch Teemley did a great job in putting this story together.

A Fresh Look at Familiar Stories
24 December 2019
Season 1 of The Chosen is outstanding. The creativity and passion of the writers and the actors bring a fresh look at Biblical history and the people most know from reading Scripture. Whether or not each viewer agrees with a storyline or character portrayal is not as important as that each episode brings a perspective to consider and an opportunity to delve deeper into the Bible. Even for skeptics & non-believers, the character development and building of the story is enticing. As a Christian, I welcome the chance to see another vision that is faithful to Scripture yet from a different POV. It awakens a desire to explore and reconnect with the familiar while imagining possibilities.

Simple but powerful
13 July 2018
A very good portrayal of just a bit of the frustration & helplessness while dealing with bureaucracy & battling PTSD. In less than 20 minutes this story tells more than some films do in 2 hours. Good story. And I was particularly impressed by the performance of Kate Cloutier.

I Can Only Imagine
19 March 2018
The story behind the song that went beyond the Christian music charts into the mainstream and brought the group, MercyMe, into prominence in Christian music. The movie is based on the life of musician Bart Millard and the experiences that lead to the writing of the song. Obviously, the film can only touch on a few highlights of his life and career, and J Michael Finley strikes the right note, not only with his amazing musical gift but as an actor portraying Bart Millard. The stand-out for me was Dennis Quaid. I have always been a fan and his performance as an abusive father was outstanding. "I Can Only Imagine" is a film that shows that forgiveness and redemption are always possible and the movie and song tell of the hope many believe in today. There were both tears and laughter from the audience of the sold-out screening I attended and I heard many positive comments. The Erwin Brothers step up their game with each film they make. Congratulations to cast and crew for a job well done.

Beyond the Farthest Star
14 October 2017
"Beyond the Farthest Star" is an insightful, mesmerizing story that centers on the Wells family. Each struggle with resentment and bitterness that threatens to destroy their family...and the emotions intensify following a move to the small town of Leonard, Texas. BTFS has universal themes that speak to all people and effectively weaves the idea that there is hope in spite of physical or emotional scars. This richly layered story shares a raw honest portrayal of transformation and restoration after hidden secrets are revealed and healing is allowed to begin. Elements of suspense, romance, and political intrigue are combined with multi-dimensional characters to present an escalating tension that intensifies to an explosive climax, and, ultimately, to a satisfying conclusion.

When "Beyond the Farthest Star" was in theaters, I was able to see it several times and was riveted to the screen each time as I picked up nuances missed before. The story is fascinating and the actors do an incredible job of making their characters come to life on screen. This film also inspired a novel by Bodie & Brock Thoene, a Kinkade painting, and a new arrangement of "Beauty For Ashes" by Crystal Lewis. I am thrilled that it is coming to DVD so I can have a copy of my own and can share it with family and friends who missed it in theaters. Not for younger kids, but I highly recommend this movie for 13 and up!

Leaving Limbo (2013)
8/10
Poignant, funny, and hopeful
21 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Leaving Limbo, written and directed by Sandy Boikan, is a charming, poignant, funny, and thought-provoking film that isn't quite a fairy tale, but only because it is more in-depth. Based on Boikan's play, My Wonderful Coma, the film touches on topics like forgiveness, regrets, guilt, redemption, restoration, and wasted years. The running theme, based on Joel 2:25, reminds us of God's promise that there is hope for our future.

Mandy Brown, as Monica Wyatt, is fascinating to watch as she goes through every range of emotion as a young woman who awakens to find herself nearing 40 and having slept away half of her life. Trying to come to terms with things that were not common in the 80s brings moments of comedy...and nostalgia. She gives an outstanding performance as a woman who emotionally is still on the brink of adulthood yet has suddenly been propelled into a world that must feel like she is living in a dream. As former fiancée, Ben, Elias Cecil gives a great portrayal of one who has given up his dreams and grown up to be a serious, overly-protective father who has lost much of the joy of life he had as a teen with a promising future.

Owen Williams (Wallace) does not get as much screen time as some of the others in the film, but his character is one of the more fascinating ones. As the driver of the car, he has spent 19 years living with the guilt of his actions. He reminds me a lot of Jim Carrey as a comedic actor, but both actors are also incredible in dramas.

The remaining major cast members all give strong performances. Noelle Perris is Tuesday, Monica's best friend, who also married (and divorced) Ben as Monica lay sleeping. David Fruechting gives a tremendous performance as the father who never gave up hope, and used his experience to share his faith and hope to others in a crisis situation. Lauren Montgomery as the niece who was a child in 1989, but now a woman who is in many ways more mature than her aunt is like the "voice of reason" as Monica struggles to reconcile her past life with her current one. The comic relief is Amy Mathieson as Rosa, the British nurse who has spent over a decade caring for her comatose patient and still thinks of Monica as her closest confidante.

There is so much to say about the film, but I don't want to risk giving away any plot points. Some of the things that seem illogical to me all make sense as the film adds different layers and twists to the story. There were a couple of times when things did not quite add up for me, but not to the point that it took away my enjoyment. Leaving Limbo is one of those films that can carry heavy subject matter, but does so with a compelling story, a lot of fun references to the 80s, and a satisfying ending. It is a faith-based film, but it is a natural part of the character's lives. This movie is one that can be enjoyed by all. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend others to pick up a copy.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this DVD from the director of the film in order to write this review. No promises were made of a positive review.

A fun family friendly film
9 May 2014
Mom's Night Out is one of the most delightful comedies I have seen in years. It was pure joy to sit through a film that was not filled with crude, raunchy, vulgar "humor" or language. I honestly had doubts about even attending; my thoughts were "chick flick" (not a huge fan), the "dad is inept" routine (whose popularity is what led me to quit watching television comedies years ago), and how rare comedy is with faith-based films. I seldom cry or laugh at films, in theaters anyway, but I laughed out loud during much of this film. Best part? I laughed at loud because it genuinely appealed to my sense of humor. Sadly, I have been known to laugh out loud because a film is poorly written or made, but this film is simply funny.

During the past couple of days, I have read some bad reviews of the film, and I want to address those. The ones I have read have been written by people who apparently attack any film that has Christianity shown in a positive light (and Mom's Night Out is by no stretch of the imagination an evangelical film), stay at home moms (the laments by some of the reviewers about Allyson's lack of employment are a humorous read themselves), and those who actually seem to feel a need for raunchy humor and crude language. I have read a few comments about it being "sexist"; I saw couples I recognize----partners who know that marriage is not 50/50 but 100/100, and that sometimes one needs a bit more support (and it works both ways). Instead of seeing a small slice of life, these reviewers have completely defined people based on one storyline.

I remember having a 'come-apart' a couple of times when a house full of children, especially pre-schoolers, got overwhelming. That is a part of who I am, but not the complete person. Understand what I mean? So, I could completely relate to the film and various characters in it. Some parts edged toward 'screwball comedy', which I happen to love, but sometimes you need to suspend belief for a while. So, take a break, relax, and enjoy!

A fun, faith-friendly film
13 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
(I don't think there are any spoilers, but not positive.)

After losing his job, David (Joe Boyd) is pushed by his roommate (Benjamin Keller)to hire a life coach (Joyce) to motivate him. When Joyce (Rebecca St.James) invites David to join the volunteer group that she takes to a retirement home, David discovers his manipulative ex-boss, William(Hunter Shepard), is part of the group. The retirees, noticing that both new volunteers are interested in Joyce, decide to add to the drama by deliberately pushing the rivalry to a higher level. The competition goes extreme and ultimately leads David on a journey that may mean he loses all he hoped to find. Written and directed by Brad Wise, A Strange Brand Of Happy is a Rebel Pilgrim Production.

My Review: A Strange Brand Of Happy is not what many think of when they think "Christian film", but is more of a faith-friendly type film. I think of it as a quirky, romantic comedy. It's not a film for children, although they will not see or hear anything inappropriate. It is probably more along the lines of a PG film. It made me laugh as I watched and I got a bit teary-eyed during one scene (unusual for me). It is a fun film for "date night" or to see with a group of friends. I don't want to give away too much, so I will just summarize a bit below.

David lost his job, albeit one he hated, but doesn't know what direction he should take to find meaning in his life. Can he find fulfillment in a new career or is there more to being happy? His friend, Ben, believes a "life coach" is the answer and sets his friend up with one who is also very attractive. David is unemployed, unfocused, a bit immature, and never really thinks about God. Joyce finds joy in her life and believes God finds joy in her when she uses the talents He has given her. Will their professional relationship stand in the way of a personal one? Joyce believes one of the best ways to help yourself is by serving others, and convinces David to volunteer at a retirement home. The residents (Shirley Jones, Marty Ingels, Venida Evans, Bobby Rodgers) quickly involve themselves in the lives of these volunteers and their manipulations are hilarious. Yet, they also provide the help and guidance David needs to get his life heading toward a happy future after decisions made nearly cause him to lose everything.

I called this a romantic comedy, but it is more than just boy meets girl, they flirt, they fight, and love conquers all. This is also about finding the gifts God has given you and using them. You will find God when you seek Him, but sometimes you just have to know where to look.

How does a flyer, a landlady (Bekka Prewitt) with a crush, a poet (Anis Mojgani), and a knight in paint-splattered armor fit in this story? You will have to see the film to get those answers!! *I was shown an advanced screening of this film in order to write a review. I was not required to write a positive review, but only for my honest opinion.

a charmingly sweet romantic comedy
9 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the film! It was a sweet love story with comedic overtones I found appealing; perhaps you would even call it a fairy tale with a twist. This isn't my favorite genre, however I liked it more than I do many others in this category. Brittany Joyner & Donny Boaz are both wonderful in their roles as Clara & Rick and you find yourself cheering them on as the romance unfolds. Stephen Brodie, as Clara's 'husband' Marty, is a funny, vulnerable, charming character who doesn't appear to be a responsible adult, but has a loyal & loving nature that makes it nearly impossible not to like him. Benjamin Dane is Jack---Rick's party-loving best friend---who must work hard since he obviously plays hard, too. His efforts to push Rick to pursue the wild life are determined yet he made me laugh when he reluctantly accepts defeat. And, of course, the 3 'old biddies' (Sammie Portman, Theressa Railsback, and Morgana Shaw) are interfering albeit well-intentioned busybodies who genuinely care about Clara. This trio made me smile, and reminded me of a few of my own family members.

Fun family film
2 October 2012
This is a cute film, reminiscent of the Disney films from when I was younger. While some of the film was a bit corny or far-fetched, it is a breath of fresh air as far as the 'bathroom humor' laden films that are too often aimed at tweens. Kids who love horses, trick riding, and rodeos will especially love this film. A budding romance between one of the older 'Sweethearts' (Madison Burge) and a cowboy (Jackson Rathbone) brings an added dimension to the film. There were lessons learned about respect and starting over after making a mistake yet without being overly "preachy". No bad language, no nudity, nothing tossed in for a parent to be hovering over their child worrying about covering their eyes or ears! I enjoyed watching it myself, and it is a very good choice if you are looking for a film to watch with your kids.

Lucifer Has His Day
8 January 2011
I didn't know what to expect when I first heard about this short series, but was intrigued enough to check it out for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find a well written and informative documentary that gave the history of Satan and his influence on mankind throughout the ages. The title role of The Dark Prince was acted by the remarkable actor Benjamin Dane. Having seen him in more light-hearted roles, I was a bit taken aback at his portrayal of the charming yet insidious personification of evil. He gave a very convincing performance, so I was delighted to hear that it is the opposite of his real life. :) This, however, is not strictly a performance based program. Experts, along with the host, Jeffrey Seif, give a fascinating number of facts related to Lucifer. For both the individual, and for small groups doing Biblical studies, The Dark Prince is an excellent resource to use to learn more about the angel who led the first rebellion against God.

Echoes Of Innocence
8 January 2011
This movie is one that will require you to know who Joan of Arc is, so I did have to provide background info to my teen-aged grandchildren. However, when they watched this with me, they found the storyline and action every bit as intriguing as I did. Their perfunctory sighs soon turned to "shhh" whenever anyone spoke. On one hand I did have to explain some of the symbolism to them, but I do believe they would have enjoyed it just as much without my need to turn movies into teachable moments. I thought the acting was very good and the story was one that unfolded at a nice pace. I found it to be a film that not only spoke to a relevant issue for today's teens, but also presented a beautiful allegory to those of us who are Christians. Frankly, I have watched it several times, and I enjoy it more with each viewing. It certainly is a very thought-provoking film and one that I would recommend to others. The fact that the main character Sarah (Sara Simmonds) was not Catholic, yet her spiritual mentor was a Catholic priest (Benjamin Dane) was handled in a sympathetic yet realistic manner. The acting skills of both, plus the rest of the cast, was sheer delight to watch.

Versatile Performance
7 January 2011
Benjamin Dane is absolutely hilarious!! I have been accustomed to seeing him in more serious roles, so I viewed this with a bit of trepidation. I laughed out loud watching the various characters he portrayed!! I knew he was good, but this far exceeded my expectations! I hope to see a lot more of Benjamin Dane in the future. Both his sense of humor and his facial expressions give a wide array of versatility in his performance. I know he will be outstanding in any comedic role he chooses, whether the more broad form of farce or in a subtle form. His dramatic performances are even more amazing. All I can say is that I expect to see more of Benjamin Dane on both the small screen and the big screen, and I eagerly anticipate his next performance!
