The Godfather Part II (1974)
Even better than the first one. If possible...
Don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. I'll try to be original...
This one started out kind of slow and boring. However, the middle and the ending made up for that. But I guess we needed a slow beginning for this movie to have an amazing middle and end.
The acting, amazing. Al Pacino portrayed his character perfectly, and not just Al, everybody.
The plot was more confusing than the first one, and you may have to watch it more than once to get it, but of course I didn't mind watching it again. This one focuses more on Michael's relationship with family and friends rather than business (however, business was still a major part of the plot). We also go back into the old days when the original Godfather was just a young man, and we see how his character developed into the person he was in the first movie.
I didn't pay too much attention to the music in this one, partially because I was too busy trying to figure out what was going on. However I'm sure it's great...
Cinematography and effects. Once again, camera work is out-standing. And like the first movie, the action scenes were in good taste, and the death scenes were relevant to the plot. I explained this in my review of the first movie, so I don't want to repeat myself too much. The balance between dialogue and action was a bit heavier on the dialogue side this time. It bothered me a little at first, but once I payed attention till the end, I can easily conclude this movie was better than the first.
The Godfather (1972)
Amazing in every way.
I'm not sure exactly "what" makes this movie so great, so I'll just list the basics.
The acting was great, although I don't know if I should say amazing, since I don't really know how the mafia in the 40s really act.
The plot was amazing and not predictable at all. Although it's one of those movies where you really had to pay attention, or usually you have to watch it twice to understand everything that is going on. Even though it was 3 hours long, I didn't get bored at any point (which I find happens a lot with long movies).
The soundtrack is unforgettable, the theme is very soothing and I find myself listening to it a lot. It was also very fitting with the movie.
Cinematography and effects. The filming was decent. The movie kept a nice balance between dialogue and action scenes, and the action scenes were in very good taste (meaning they weren't "over-done" with gallons of fake blood and/ or over-exaggerated pain). All the death scenes were highly significant to the plot.
Because of the dialogue/ action balance, this movie can appeal to anyone of all ages. This movie definitely makes my top 5.
The King's Speech (2010)
The worst movie I've ever seen in my life.
I'm not over-exaggerating, I actually haven't seen many bad movies. And I wasn't dragged to see this, I just figured since it's a movie, it couldn't be bad.
Now my reviews aren't based on whether the movie delivered a good message or not, I honestly don't care about the message. And either way, the message of this movie wasn't at all amazing. My ratings are based on how much I enjoyed watching the movie, and a bit before an hour into this movie, I felt like killing myself out of claustrophobia.
The movie had no colour, other than brown, black and white. It was depressing to watch. If this is honestly how England looked back in the 30s, then just DON'T MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT IT. Why on Earth would we want to be reminded about how colourless and boring the world was? I did like "The Godfather" though, it felt much less claustrophobic, and it was based near the same time period. This movie made me feel so enclosed, and trapped, and I couldn't even finish watching it. I ran out of the theatre 15 minutes early, but my parents explained what happened. Nothing interesting happened in the movie. Somebody has a speech impediment, SO WHAT? TONS OF PEOPLE HAVE SPEECH IMPEDIMENTS! TONS OF PEOPLE WERE ABUSED IN THEIR CHILDHOOD! THAT'S NOTHING NEW AT ALL! This movie looks like it was made in the 70s, but even if I watched it in the 70s, I still wouldn't like it. As I mentioned before, it made me feel claustrophobic. This may be because there were only 2 major settings where more than 2 minutes of footage occurred, or maybe because of the lack of colour. Although I think it's because of the horribly tiny and simple story.
My father had to explain to me what the movie was really about, but the meaning has absolutely NO EFFECT on anybody. Times have changed, we've heard it before. So what? I can't believe somebody can actually LIKE this movie. It's horribly over-rated. The king had no historical importance, so why should we even care about him?
Sukûru deizu (2007)
Sickening, disturbing, emotional, and... humorous?
It has already been said, but it's true so I'll say it again. It starts off light like a normal romance anime, nothing special, but at the 4th episode it starts to get darker, and darker, and heavier, then suddenly the final episode arrives and hits you in the stomach with a baseball bat. I watched the entire series in 1 day because I couldn't wait to find out what happens next, so it was around 1:00 AM when I saw the last episode. I couldn't sleep too well, I was emotionally disturbed for about a week but afterwards I just relaxed and started laughing.
I re-watched many of the episodes (including the ending) and still love them. The characters are likable, (everyone may hate Makoto, but they aren't reading in between the lines) the story is moving, and I can't remember anything else to say. I recommend this for people who either have a strong stomach, or a barf bag.
It may be a bit unrealistic, but then again, when the hell are animes ever realistic?
Sorority Row (2009)
Good until we find out who the killer is...
I thought the movie was pretty good, but my decision immediately changed at the end.
The killer is always wearing a hood, so we only find out who the killer is at the end, so it's a mix between a mystery and a horror movie. When this mix is used, we are usually told to make the killer very unexpected, but after watching this movie, we learn it can be overdone.
---Spoiler--- It is good to make the killer unexpected, but when the killer is not even a main character, we know we have a problem. Of course this worked out well in Friday the 13th, but it doesn't work in this case. Why? Because of the setup. Setup is everything. The creators of the movie thought it would be a good idea to make the killer some random guy who is barely mentioned in the movie, and HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STORY. Why should he even care about Megan's death? He wasn't there, some of us even forget he exists. Maybe if the creators developed on his character a little more (or a lot more) it might have worked out.
--End Spoiler--- So overall, the movie was terribly ruined at the end, but other than that the kills were pretty good, and the signature weapon (tire-iron) was well thought out. Too bad it turned out a crummy mystery movie, which contained a mystery that shouldn't have been solved.
