Oppenheimer (2023)
Wanted to love it more
Brilliant acting all around. As an old Army Veteran I enjoyed Matt Damon as the General in charge and Oppie's confidant. The character development was wonderful including suspicious Teller and reliable friend Lawrence.
Having watched the great msnbc documentary last week, I was in my mind expecting a more linear portrayal of the historic events and lead up. Perhaps there was a bit too much artistic license used here.
The constant flashback scenes were difficult to follow - and I was focused. The use of color vs B&W didn't seem to have a pattern to timeframe or events. The music seemed too dominant while the dialogue was often hard to pickup and decipher (accents and jargon).
The last hour seemed anti-climatic following the atomic bomb destruction, and it wasn't clear what RDJ's important Lewis Strauss character's motives were.
But the most important parts of the story were presented directly - the initial exuberance of supporting their country in wartime, the brilliant planning and teamwork, the beautiful Los Alamos location, the unknowns of fusion and fission, and the realization that this terrible bomb would not prevent future wars - and the paranoia it set off vis a vis the "communist threat" were all wonderfully presented.
I just feel like this important story would have benefitted by being told in a linear time fashion. A very relevant story in todays world - and Russia remains as the unpredictable bad character.
Border G-Man (1938)
Great period film
My mom used to tell me about the Saturday matinees. This would be one of those movies. Good battling evil, with a period plot involving guns, money, and political blackmail. Also filmed around the old California ranches, Mulholland Drive (looks like), and the beaches and cliffs of Malibu. All in all a fun flashback back to a different time.

Columbo: Last Salute to the Commodore (1976)
Great off-beat episode!
I see some folks don't like this episode because it's different?! This was made at a time when murder mysteries and group suspects were very popular. The direction is different, the camera angles edgy, and the characters are well-rounded and interesting even peculiar! And a different ending from the usual model of seeing who committed the murder up front. And filmed in Newport Beach CA it appears? Great episode!
