Fred (2008)
Fun video series
OK so I finally got around to watching a couple Fred videos on YouTube. To be honest, I don't get what everyone's hating about. For heaven's sake, he's a kid! Consider that when watching his videos..!? He's barely a legal adult right now, to say nothing of how young he was when he started the Fred videos. And for a teen who didn't come from Hollywood or have a lot of formal training in the making of TV shows and films, he did a great job! I certainly did not hate him (as other reviewers said I would) after watching his videos.. I was actually impressed at his unique (off the wall) style and the fact that he does it all himself was even more impressive. Personally I wish this kid the best, and with all the experience he's getting out here in Hollywood, someday there may be another "Dan Schneider" who does screwball comedy and gains an audience and a half! Give the kid a break. He was out there doing something unusual and having fun with it. If his comedy isn't your thing, fine. Not everyone's going to like everything. But don't put him down for trying his hand at an industry he obviously has a knack for.
Shake It Up (2010)
Wow...mixed feelings...
OK, so I originally saw this show and my opinions were the same as almost everyone else who's reviewed: THUMBS DOWN. I wasn't impressed with the lack of respect the 2 main characters have for other people (including elders), nor was I impressed with the cliché "little kid antagonist" that so many kids shows seem to have nowadays. The little boy himself is a decent actor though! It's a shame his character isn't anything to write home about. Oh, and Gunther and Tinka..? Seriously? That is about as ridiculous as ridiculous gets. Completely unbelievable and very out of place.
ENTER the Christmas show. Yes, I watched it. I didn't want to miss the show that was coming on AFTER it (I think it was Good Luck Charlie), so I sat through it. Wincing at first, but I decided since it was Christmas, I should give it a chance. I'm sort of glad I did. Can I just say thanks to the writers for incorporating religious Christmas carols into the show? That was a really nice surprise. So many shows are afraid of offending people - it was great to see something like this! Not only that, but the fact that CeCe actually gave up her purse to help someone else...this is the kind of thing kids need to see on TV more often. Not being rebellious, unkind, and just plain selfish. If all the shows were as decent as the Christmas show, I would be a regular viewer of Shake It Up. Unfortunately, this is the only episode I've seen that actually promotes any sort of values. I will try to keep an eye out for more positive episodes in the future (I live in hope!).
