Benkiya Bale (1983)
A Classic Film.
I was surprised that IMDb does not contain any reviews for " Benkiya Bale " an absolute classic, one of the major landmarks in Kannada Cinema. So I decided to be the first one to review this Movie. Benkiya Bale, based on a Novel by TARASU, is a fantastic Movie with a touching narration. The narration will have you in tears , especially in the climax, where both the Hero & Heroine die. A gripping Movie, a Family drama, so rare these days. And it was a Block buster , having a Silver Jubilee run. The Music was a chart buster as well, with all the songs becoming popular, especially the memorable , evergreen song " Bisilaadharenu Maleyaadharenu " sung once by the legendary SPB & once by another legend, S Janaki. Coming to performances, the lead pair, Anant Nag & Lakshmi were absolutely mind blowing. Another Super Hit film of this super hit pair. With a brilliantly underplayed performance, Anant Nag proves he is one of the greatest actors Indian Cinema has seen. His acting is so spontaneous & natural. He would have got more recognition if he had been in Bollywood. Lakshmi is at her best as well, & she infuses life into the role of the girl next door. Ashwath, Balakrishna & Vajramuni provide good support, but amongst the supporting cast, the one who steals the show is Toogudeepa Srinivas, with a fine performance as the good Samaritan who helps the helpless young couple . A real master piece from the veteran director duo, Dorai-Bhagawan. If you have not seen it, see it today.
Aap Ke Saath (1986)
A Nice, clean Family entertainer.
Aap ke Saath is by no means an extra ordinary Film, but a decent, clean, family entertainer that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It's the right movie if you want to spend a few hours usefully, by getting some good entertainment. Music is average. Only the title song is good. Direction by J.Omprakash ( Hrithik Roshan's grand father ) is good. It's a Love story involving two young couples, of whom the males are brothers. Acting wise, Smita Patil does well, as always, though she looked a total misfit in such commercial movies. Anil Kapoor is lively & energetic, & gave a glimpse of what was to come in the years ahead. He is one of the finest actors Indian cinema has ever seen. The late Vinod Mehra was a fantastic actor who did justice to whichever role was given to him, & he steals the show with a underplayed performance here, as the dignified elder brother. Rati Agnihotri is superb. The late Utpal Dutt was awesome, as usual. Amrishpuri is his usual self. Watch it for time pass, without having any expectations. But what surprises me is, why did this Movie flop ?
Kamana Billu (1983)
A Memorable Classic about Friendship, Love & sacrifice.
Kaamana Billu is a memorable classic about Love, friendship & sacrifice. Though it is a Love triangle, it is an experimental movie, innovative in its treatment, & not a regular commercial potboiler. The direction by chi dattaraj is superb. All the songs are fine, with " Negila Yogi " rendered by the late C.Aswath being the best. It's one of the rare Movies where S.P.Balasubramanyam has sung in a Dr Rajkumar Movie. But the song, rendered by SPB & Picturised on Anant Nag, is not there in the film. As usual, Dr Rajkumar is awesome, & his performance is mind blowing. He infuses life into a multi dimensional role. Really, we miss him today. There is no one who can come anywhere near him today. The other Hero of the Film, Anant Nag, comes up with a scintillating performance , & matches Dr Raj frame by frame. Perhaps, he is the only Kannada Actor who was not over shadowed by the presence of Dr Raj. Anant Nag is one of the finest actors we have in India today. The scenes that depict the friendship between Dr Raj & Anant are fantastic. Saritha excels, as always. Balakrishna, Ashwath, Thoogudeepa Srinivas render adequate support. The film has a message for the public, to give life to physically challenged girls, as Dr Raj does in the last scene. Truly, a master piece, one of Dr Raj's finest films. Made all the more memorable by the rare combination of Dr Rajkumar & Anant Nag, truly an awesome combination. If you have not seen it, see it today. We Kannadigas are privileged to have artistes of the caliber of Rajkumar & Anant Nag amidst us.
Samayada Gombe (1984)
Great Family Drama with touching story line .
Samayadha Gombe based on a Kannnada Novel, is one of the finest films of the legendary Dr Raj Kumar. It is a clean Family drama, with a simple storyline & presentation & hence can be viewed by the whole family, like all other Dr Raj Kumar Films.
The story is basically about human relation ships. A little boy hurts his sister & runs away from home, fearing his father's wrath. He is adopted by a middle class truck driver, & grows up to become a truck driver himself, & is named Guru Murthy. He supports his foster parents , & in trying to arrange money for his sister's wedding, he is implicated in a false case & sent to Jail. On coming out of Jail, he finds his Father is dead, & becomes the head of the family. He finds a Job as a car Driver with an Air Force officer Vinod Kumar, who actually happens to be his Brother In law. He also meets his long lost Sister, & both develop some attachment for each other. Here also, he saves his sister's Kid from a kidnapper, & becomes closer to the family. He comes to know that his real Mother is on her death bed in Delhi.Vinod Kumar & his wife leave for Delhi. Un known to them, Guru also follows them, & is able to see his mother before she dies. Quietly, he returns.Vinod Kumar gets himself transferred to Delhi so that he can take care of his late Mother in law's property. He & his wife bid a tearful farewell to Guru. Till the end, Guru is unable to disclose his true identity to his Sister & Brother In law. he tells his girl Friend" I could not support them when they needed me, now with what face can I tell them the truth ". The film ends there. Truly a fine film, with a touching story line, presented brilliantly by the Master director duo, Dorai-Bhagawan. It projects Human relation ships very well, & focuses on issues like dowry, child kidnapping, sexual exploitation of women, the problems faced by Middle class families etc. Performance wise,Nata Saarva Bhauma Dr Raj Kumar is out standing & effortless as usual. Truly this is a role where he is required to display his acting skills in ALL the Nava Rasas, & he gets full marks. The two heroines Rupa Devi & Menaka do justice to their roles. Shakthi Prasad, Kanchana, Musuri Krishna Murthy & Toogu deepa Srinivas are adequate. A major high light of the Movie is PranayaRaja Dr Srinath as Squadron Leader Vinod Kumar. The popular Raj Kumar- Srinath combination again clicks here. Srinath is the second leading man of the film,& he delivers another brilliant performance. Really, we kannadigas are lucky that we have such fine Actors like Dr Raj & Srinath amidst us. May their tribe increase. Two observations about the movie, a few comedy scenes involving the Heroine could have been avoided, & Srinath should have been given a song. Other wise, a fine movie. If You have not yet seen it, go get a VCD or DVD today. If you don't, You will be missing a Master piece. The immensely popular song" Kogile Haadidhe kelideya" in the voices of Dr Rajkumar & the legendary S.Janaki will linger in your ears long after the Movie ends. Other songs are OK. One more notable number is the Title Track " Chinnadha Gombe Alla" in the Golden Voice of Dr Raj. A simple family drama which is thought provoking. The characters are so closer to real life, that the viewers will be able to relate themselves with most characters, especially Dr Raj & Shakti Prasad's characters. A real treat for the whole Family, especially those who are Fans of Rajkumar & Srinath.
