The Concert (2009)
10/10
simple and excellent
24 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
  • spoiler alert - The film can be simply categorised as an 'unlikely success story' packed with laughs generated by portraying Russians and life in Russia by overusing clichés. That may be, but it's so much more. It's funny and yet it's also incredibly sad (if you just think about things). The way french and Russian languages are nicely used (to a lot of comical effect), especially since many actors aren't Russian. Mélanie Laurent is better used in here than in Inglorious Basterds - and is surprisingly convincing. Most importantly it manages to not bore someone who's not even a casual listener of classical music with the final concerto. Quite the contrary. This has never happened to me while watching a movie, but during the long final Tchaikovski scene, there were some emotions stirred. Heck, I'm considered quite the cold 'bastard', but the music moved me in some way. Hard to explain.

Anyway, in short, it's a great movie, maybe easier to understand for an eastern-European.

Night Watch (2004)

could have been great, but fails over and over again...

Usually, the hype around an eastern movie, and especially a Russian "blockbuster" is non-existent in these days. This movie was different in that aspect, it was promoted pretty well, for a Russian movie, at least. But, as is the case in Hollywood-type blockbusters, it didn't live up to it's expectations. For starters, imho, the translation in English or any other language, doesn't do it any good. If you happen to be able to talk/understand Russian, the movie is more appealing than a subbed version. The script itself isn't bad, but lacks a certain "something", to give it unicity, or to make you feel that you really want to know what happens next. This, of course, isn't helped by the acting of the cast, which is extremely bad, at times :) Overall, it's entertaining enough, not in the sense of dumb-entertainment that's being fed into movie-goers by the big movie industry, and you have to applaud some originality in its way of showing the over-used good vs evil eternal fight. Yet, you can't forgive the horrible acting by some of the main actors, and the fact that the story is told the same way that someone would try to scratch his head with his toes, incredibly twisted and stupid at times, when there was no reason for that. It does make you want to find out what happens in the next movies, though, if you can resist to the end :)
