Let's Be Evil (2016)
Don't waste your time.
This movie started out promising until the cast put on the VR glasses and it went down hill quickly from there. The next hour made no sense at all. What was the plot? I don't know. How did it end - both my wife and I groaned when the titles came up at the end. We looked at each other and were really angry that we had watched this poor effort of a movie for nothing. This movie cannot be spoiled by anyone, because they could not tell you the ending if they wanted to. I even searched the web for some understanding because I did not think it could be that bad - and that I had missed something. But unfortunately not. Poorly written, poorly and cheaply produced and a soundtrack that made us want to leave. I am angry to have allowed myself to be taken in by the star rating - but it seems like most of the other reviewers were too. Don't waste you time.
Collateral Beauty (2016)
Did I see the same Collateral Beauty movie?
My wife and I really enjoyed this movie. Unlike some of the reviewers. I thought the acting was excellent, the story asked some questions, the theatre audience chuckled in the right places and people were carrying their tissues as they left the movie. So I guess for audiences (at least the audience I watched this with) - a success. Of course this more sensitive category of movie lays itself open for cynicism and I would not go to see this with a bunch of mates, but with this type of movie I try to sit back and let it gently flow. And it flowed nicely for my wife and I. And we were rewarded with what we thought was an excellent, satisfying ending. If Need For Speed is your favorite franchise this is not for you. But I would give it a chance if I were you, it's a better movie that some of the other reviewers claim but get the tissues ready.
Chappie (2015)
Movie with an interesting question.
This movie is entertaining, touching at times and funny. Some of the jokes and innuendos are best understood if you know South Africa, but this only adds value to those people and does not spoil it for the others. Maybe not the best reviewed movie but I believe it is a sleeper. Well worth the watch. Its entertaining and it offers some rewards. The movie was shot well, has some impressive action, some unusual characters, some tension and the disused industrial location was a great background for the story. The storyline has been detailed elsewhere but this movie left me, for the first time, with the question, why automated "people" could not seriously be the next evolutionary step on our planet. After all the human body is just a replicable machine? Could an intelligent non-living machine suit our planet better? After watching this film, it does not seem so much of a stretch - and leaving it with this question does better than some movies who leave you with nothing. So give this movie a watch - and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did - and I hope it offers you the same question.
Like Sunday, Like Rain (2014)
Intelligent and Moving
I came across this movie and my expectations were low. How good is a movie I've never heard of and that grossed $24 000? But I enjoyed it so much I gave it 9/10. It was intelligent and sparse. It was unusual and stylish. It was beautifully shot. Make no mistake - this is not a babysitter movie. It's a relationship movie. Featuring only two main characters and a few others to cement the different lives of our two key players, the understated tale of two such different cultures coming together was exceptionally interesting. The pace gives us sufficient time to enjoy some of the subtleties of this unusual relationship. There was a stretch in the way the boy character changed so suddenly, but it moved the story along. The music score was also very emotional. Make an effort to see this.
