The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Ignore anything less than a 2 and anything higher than an 8
We were excited to watch the show, and made quite an event of it. I didn't have high hopes, and I am well aware of the limitations of that they can work with. Know off the bat, it is not faithful to the books, you are getting something which is working with very little source material, so if that bothers you, this show will anger you. The first episode, I felt was very slow, introducing many factions and some even without names which I thought was very odd. The Elves have a ton of pretentious dialogue, what I a guessing will be the main character Galadriel is not likable at all. Even with the shows compressed timeline - which will hurt Numenor the most, she is 3000+ years old. Not sure if it is the actress of the directors wishes, but she is scornful and not a nice person at all and her plot armor is to the max. The second episode for me was far better, man the Dwarves - I think this is the best portrayal I have seen of them in the six PJ movies, I cant wait to spend more time with them. Music is effective, but not near on the level we have come to expect. I hope that as the story progresses we dont have to check in with each plot thread and group, that's the beauty of a TV series - take your time and develop the character's. There is plenty to keep me interested, plenty that bores me and sadly so far hasn't lived up to my hopes will I keep watching. Most definitely, will I be clearing my schedule every Friday...hope.
Mysteries of the Deep (2020)
Disappointing
Never did I ever think I would turn off a Jeremy Wade show but 10 minutes in on episode 1, I did just that. Do more Mighty Rivers, that expanded on the fishing elements and was really informative.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Amazing Spider-Man Movie
I took my kids to see this opening weekend and we finally were able to ring Mom to see it with us. We all enjoyed it so much. The film has not a single character that was not lovable or understandable. Kingpin, whom I have no other knowledge of his back story atleast in this version was a remarkable villain. Miles Morales is my favorite Spider-Person. This my be for me a "perfect movie", every scene counts for something, the cast was exceptional, the music fantastic and of course the animation style. I cannot wait to own this as it may well be the best Spider-Man movie ever.
Did I say Miles Morales is one of my new fictional hero?
Also, the way they managed to take what could have been a confusing concept and make it not only plausable but an excellent plot device was credit to the writers.
Total Recall (2012)
Looked great....but
Visually this film is amazing, for a modest 2012 budget for a grand scale sci-fi ride like this it does make you wonder where the second $125 mill goes on flicks like Transformers and POTC. It starts out pretty intense , in the second act its takes a dive of being slightly repetitive and then then the third act I had lost interest.
I love these totalitarian thrillers, its so similar to the original in dialogue its disappointing - some scenes I was quoting the next line in my head before it happened.
The action scenes especially the first chase through the roof tops is well cut, you can follow the action and felt some tension in there.
Kate B is awful, constantly having a scowl on her face, I'm sorry as well trained as she may be, taking some of the hits to her face that she does and how little weight she carries, the hand to hand combat would be totally one sided.
Speaking of hand to hand combat (spoiler) Colin F v an i-Robot in hand to hand combat - come on...and a black one at that - were they meant to be better or just costumes left over from Tron Legacy? Also, can anyone really explain why an army was being sent to the other continent? I really didn't catch that bit.
Watch it for eye candy and for that its great, for an engaging story go watch Minority Report.
6 points over all 9 for visuals
