Butterfly Kiss (1995)
Dark, thought provoking tale - Outstanding acting
I found 'Butterfly Kiss' to be at once sad and horrifying, and a story of both love and hate. It drew from me feelings of empathy for the characters of Eunice (Eu)and Miriam (Mi), and revulsion for the acts of horror which mark their journey. Is this a love story where everyone else and everything else is disregarded for the sake of Eunice's relentless search for love, fulfillment, punishment, Judith? Or is this an observation of the torment of a schizophrenic woman? So much here to involve you and that will stay with you long after. The bleak northern England setting matches the mood of the movie perfectly, and the story shows Eu and Mi's journey and relationship but cleverly leaves much of it a mystery, but what really makes this special is the outstanding performance from Amanda Plummer as Eunice.
Final (2001)
Great performances from Leary and Davis in this moral drama.
The usual varnish and sheen of Hollywood are stripped away to allow or even demand a focus on the two brilliant performances of Denis Leary and Hope Davis. The film raises emotional and moral issues regarding the good of the many versus the rights of the individual, in particular with respect to medical science. Bill (Leary) and Ann (Davis) grow to understand each other and their situation, and we learn along with them through a series of doctor-patient sessions and Bill's flashbacks. The story holds you as it unfolds and leads you to a surprising and satisfying climax. Not for those who want to switch off and be dazzled by special effects, this movie requires you to immerse yourself and, especially in the first part, even work hard at understanding it. Those that do are rewarded with a close understanding of the characters and a satisfying story.
