Desperate Housewives (2004)
It's "Sex in the Suburbs" to help replace my "Sex in the City" fixation! :-)
So, I was a little late jumping on this bandwagon...but I'm head over feet now! I just watched every episode (yeah, all 23...plus the special and the Oprah show! Don't ask how I landed them...) back to back during the past two days, and I must say I am hooked! I didn't need any Starbucks Chai Frappucino's, because the acting was so superb and the lines were so well-written and hilariously delivered that I am so wired just from watching! This is the "most finely spun yarn" I've ever watched on TV! Congratulations to the creator for putting together such a wonderful cast of characters. I LOVE seeing these ladies finally get the attention they deserve! Here's hoping Teri, Felicity, Marcia, Eva, and Nicollette all get the awards and accolades they deserve!!!! Teri Hatcher is a mixture of Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe. She can carry off slapstick humor one moment with wonderful pratfalls, pranks and rants...then become a dramatic sex pot in the very next scene. YOU GO GIRL! Lucy would be proud...just don't go singing to the President anytime soon sweetie! Felicity Huffman is absolutely perfection in portraying the "everywoman" that we all want to be one day (as scary as that sounds). She is so realistic it is scary! That "ADD" drug episode hit so close to home for some that I know (I teach high school), and her "wired for sound" scenes were unbelievable. I've seen meltdown in motion, and my dear...you hit the nail on the head! SUPERB! Marcia Cross, I don't think I will ever think of a Stepford wife again without picturing your face darling. I have never seen a better portrayal of OCD in all of my life. You show more emotion in your picture perfect face in a fraction of a second than any actress I've ever seen.
I have been mourning the loss of Sex and the City, and I always doubted that network TV could ever fill that hole in my soul that was left by my favorite shows demise...so THANK YOU Mr. Cherry for creating such a MASTERPIECE! And thank you ladies (well, I hate to be sexist...AND Gentlemen) for giving this single 30 year old gal something entertaining to watch (besides shows that make fun of other single thirtysomething gals!).
Tracey Ullman: Live and Exposed (2005)
"Bloody" Brilliant Performance Tracey! :-)
It was hard for me to use the adjective "BLOODY", but for you Tracey...I will gladly put aside my usual boring choices to describe such wonderful work! I have seen this show on HBO 5 times now, and I have laughed until I have cried! It is so GREAT to see you back on stage where you belong. I thought the show was going to be like Robin Williams or Whoopi Goldberg's one-man/woman shows that I have seen previously on HBO, but with your special brand of humor and adorable characters (did I just call them adorable, some are quite scary!). What I got from the show was a FANTASTIC glimpse inside the mind of a comedic genius! What a TREAT! I loved the stories about the trials and tribulations of growing up (it is obvious to me as a teacher that you are and have ALWAYS been GIFTED my dear!), especially the one about your "STAR." Every time I here that a STAR IS BORN, I will always think of you...simply because no one can create and improvise a character quite the way that you do.
I was a teen in the 80's and I remember hearing you sing (what I thought was your one hit wonder...who knew you had more!) "They Don't Know" and I remember comparing your talent to my other fave Cyndi Lauper. After laughing at your hilarious skits of your life story, and crying at the thought of how you coped with the passing of your father by making your mother laugh (I did the same when our family lost my 1 year old sister)...I have never left an HBO show with such a good feeling and it was if I had gone to therapy! Then to hear you sing my one of my fave songs at the end...it was just magnificent. THANKS TRACEY! GO HOME...but don't stay too long, we miss you on TV regularly :-)
Something's Gotta Give (2003)
A MOVIE TO LOVE - Watch your backs Julia & Brad, Jack & Diane are THE NEW HIT FOR THE NEW YEAR!
What a wonderful story this movie told...and it needs to be told to all the masses! And to star...of ALL actors, but ole' Jack himself is BRILLIANT, just brilliant! He of all people needs to see that women only get better as they get older (quit dating young women Jack!), and yes folks, this is coming from a 29 year old that would NEVER date someone 20 years their senior (sorry Kathie Lee Gifford, we like Frank...but he is a little past his prime). Diane Keaton far outshines the rest of the cast as the BEST female lead role in years...and believe me, I've seen all the romantic comedies of the last decade. What guts Diane has to reveal herself at her age, something she hasn't done since her early years in theater! I could have lived without seeing Jack's "BACK"side, but you know...each nude scene was integral to the storyline and WELL SHOT! Kudos to the director, producer, writers AND especially to the casting director who picked the two BEST veteran actors to show us how it's done! BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO...you deserve a curtain call! Happy New Year and here's wishing for more movies like this with VETERAN actors who are older AND wiser!
