Attack the Block (2011)
Satisfying, dark, funny & original sci-fi movie
I really enjoyed this film...
I hadn't even heard of it I saw it advertised at my local cinema.
The best way I can describe this film is like a modern British mash-up between the Goonies, Gremlins, The Wire and South Park.
We get to peer into the gritty lives and youthful spirit of a teenage street gang who live in a council block and the various characters they interact with. This film portrays teenage daring and social dynamics in a believable and compelling way. Events are occasionally gruesome but never stupid. I enjoyed the seemingly honest, entertaining account of life in council flats for kids, brought to life by the challenge of aliens. The whole film is exciting, fast paced, at times scary, full of action and loads of fun.
So - if you want to see an original and very entertaining sci-fi film - Attack the Block is great.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
A well produced, albeit slow and at times tedious narrative....
I watched this film with high hopes... based upon the IMDb rating that placed it amongst the best films of all time. By no means did it meet my expectations.... nor would I place it amongst other films that get such high ratings.
I cannot fault the acting or production of this movie, though the story and style were not to my tastes.
The story is brilliantly executed...Daniel Day Lewis, in particular, shows off his great acting ability and is entirely convincing in his role. The production of the film was satisfying....
HOWEVER
This film was so tediously slow and drawn out that for me, it was ultimately unsatisfying. At a few points throughout the movie, I considered stopping watching it entirely because the pace of this film left me slightly bored / semi-engaged. I only finished watching it because there was a short while left... and often I didn't really care about what happened next.
So, if being gently harrowed by a gritty slow moving drama, that depicts the hard living and mindsets of 1900's oil prospectors and the communities around them is your thing, perhaps you'll love this and it's execution.
On the other hand, if you seek inspiration or excitement or to get a buzz from what you watch, you won't find it in this film. One of the other reviews called it an "emotionally draining masterpiece" and I'm inclined to agree, though I'd rather watch films that are "emotionally fulfilling masterpieces".
Nuit blanche (2009)
Touching & Breathtakingly Beautiful
I watched Nuit Blanche because it was linked to from Wired.com. I only watched it because I'd worked on a project relating to car safety, and it was introduced as a film with a slow motion car crash.
Little did I expect, however, to watch one of the most beautiful, romantic, transcendent and enchanting short films I've ever seen.
Nuit Blanche is stunningly beautiful.
Visually, it's spectacular. The music, literally, soothes my soul... If you've only seen this on a laptop with bad speakers, try watching it on a PC with high quality sound.
I can't remember the last time I watched a short film that touched me as deeply, or that I watched another 20 times since.
Bravo to the producer! Thank you for making my day.
