Sideways (2004)

not great
9 February 2005
Probably most people will, like me, see this movie because of all the Oscar hype. I was looking forward to it because it would be great to see a new and interesting film after a very cookie-cutter year, in my opinion. I wound up being disappointed, not because this was a bad movie, but because it wasn't particularly good.

I wont spoil anything, but the promising premise of a last week before marriage for two friends had potential. I quickly found myself wondering why the two main characters were friends, their relationship did not seem plausible to me. They were incompatible and didn't seem to care much about one another. The problem with Miles, while well portrayed by Giamatti, was that I didn't really care for him. I was frustrated with him, and didn't find myself pulling for him.

The acting was good, but the story was slow, and to me depressing. Hearing Miles spout on about wine made me want him to get a life, and perplexed me as to why a long lost Virginia Madsen would have any interest in him.

Maybe it is just me, but just because a story is a little different and has the "independent" label shouldn't automatically garner it heaps of awards. If this is the best pic of 04, let us pray for 05. Save it for a rental on a quiet Wednesday night.

terrible. spoilers like you read about.

Warning: Spoilers
I have not been so dissapointed in a long time. This movie was so far departed from the first two, it was almost a new film, not the end of a trilogy. Several things were wrong, in my opinion. First, Neo was in less than half of the movie. The fight between the humans and the machine for the dock in Zion was cool, but it was the best scene in the movie. It should have been a side plot, a short scene. There were none of the kung fu fighting scenes that practically defined the first two films. Neo spent the whole film becoming more and more Christlike, to Smith's Satan(duh!); do we really need the imagery pounded home so bluntly? Secondly, Smith, by far the best character, was also conspicuously absent. He became so interesting and entertaining in the second flick, now he is just a typical bad guy on a power trip. Lastly, nothing is really resolved. The machines and the matrix go on, who is to say with Neo gone they don't break the peace after three days? Why was Neo the one? Cause he chose to be? Give me a fu#$ing break. Why did the Oracle try to help them? How did the Merovingian ever become a power? And lastly, how p-whipped was Morpheus by Will Smith's wife? If he gets bossed around like that, what chance do the rest of us have?

Bottom line- If I want some kind of an ethical, religious, morality,or spiritual lesson, I will go to church. The Wachowskis really dropped the ball here, I should have stayed home and watched the second one on DVD, I'd be less bitter. Great boob job on Persephone, though.

Underworld (2003)

should have been better... a couple of spoilers...

Warning: Spoilers
Overall, a decent movie, but it could have been so much better. Excellent special effects and a good general story, but several problems. First of all, it left me wanting more. The story could have had a little more detail. Secondly, about halfway through I got the feeling that I was just being set up for a sequel, which obviously was correct. Lastly, you really don't get to see too much about the werewolves, other than they are constantly attacking the vamps. That would have been interesting.

So pretty good but could have been great. Hopefully this will be one of those rare sequels that is better than the original, like the Blade movies.

Head of State (2003)
are you kidding me?

I knew not to see this one in the theater, but I am pretty surprised at how bad it is. It seems forced and disjointed, and the only thing that kept me from shutting it off is that you never know when Rock or Mac will be funny for a scene. If Rock doesn't start taking better roles,if you have seen Down to Earth or that horrible flick with Hopkins you know what I mean, he is never going to be able to really get to the next level, which would be a shame. He reminds me of Eddie Murphy in the early eighties, getting off to a great start and then fizzling out(The Distinguished Gentelman? Talk about jumping the shark.) His character is bland and predictable, and it is hard to watch someone as funny as him play such a role. All of the supporting cast except for Mac is terrible, and the credits have more plot than the movie. The funniest parts, like him imagining himself getting shot after being elected, are just watered down parts from his standup, which is generally terrific. Bottom line, instead of catching this one, stare at the wall for an hour and forty. You'll be a better person for it.

Bad Boys II (2003)
exactly what it should be

This was a very entertaining movie. Was it realistic? No. Of course it wasn't. The idiots who trash this flick because Will and Martin could not possibly take on the Cuban army should have saved their money. It had great action and was very funny, if you were looking for something else you would have been disappointed. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, brainless, two and one half hours(yikes). PS- The scene where Martin's daughter gets picked up for her first date is as funny as anything you will see this year.
