The Archer: Fugitive from the Empire (1981)
Missing most of the story
I did enjoy this made for television movie far more than my rating indicates. My low rating is more for the fact many plot elements were introduced and only one resolved. If I remember the advertising at the time, this was supposed to be the first in a series of made for television movies, with each released at 3-12 month intervals. The movies would introduce characters giving their background. They would, across the series, slowly form a typical fantasy role playing adventuring group and save the day. It was essentially a pilot. This allowed the expectation many plot elements would be let unresolved but resolved in subsequent titles. The movie apparently was not as much of a draw as hoped and no further installments were ever made. If you enjoy fantasy AND enjoyed the movie Eragon you will probably enjoy this movie. Just do not expect to see a story with an ending.
Total Recall (1990)
The movie has serious holes.
If you never read the book you will probably enjoy the movie and give it high marks. I vastly preferred the novel "Total Recall" by Piers Anthony that came out a couple of years before the movie. I have never read the original story "We Can Remember It for You, Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick from 1966.
The movie was 100% faithful to the book by Piers Anthony on the scenes shown. It just did not show everything. And I would have shorted some the chase scenes to include the missing information or just deleted the scenes where they were going to be cover the WHY's of it being important to the movie.
An example is in the very beginning it has a scene concentrating on a news report for about a minute and then never returns to it or why it is important. It has several of these threads just dangling and forgotten.
I suspect the original story by Dick did not leave all the holes and the reader with a "What was that about and why did they include it?" questions.
I understand the movie is being considered for remake. Hopefully they will either drop the scenes or include the scenes that complete it.
