Jurassic World (2015)
Dino-mite!!
Some people are saying its "stupid," but as a huge Jurassic park fan, someone who has seen all of the films multiple times, I would say that who ever said this film is "stupid" is either missing the point of the film or is stuck so far up their own A**E that they can lick their own tonsils.
It's not supposed to be like a Kurosawa or Welles film, its not Shakespeare. This is an exciting, awe inspiring and most of all a FUN film. I thought it was the closest film to the first in terms of exhilaration. It actually reminded me of the original a few times, which is a great honour.
Finally, if there was one thing that annoyed me it was the product placement. I saw so many obvious plants that it started to be an overt ad for coke, mercedes, verizon, samsung and others. But then it made me think about what was going on in the park in the film. They too were having trouble with corporate sponsors. So maybe the product placement was a cute way of implying that all art or science is inevitably valued only by its monetary worth.
Lake Mungo (2008)
Slow Paced Spine Chiller!
I must say i was expecting another "Paranormal Activity," I found however a much more refined film. PA really goes for the jugular, it almost flaunts its ghoul. every other shot is a spooky cam image of some talcum powder moving or a door wobbling. Lake Mungo tries to make it's images of unexplainable origin rather more organic. As if they were accidentally found. Or only noticed as an after thought. I feel more than merely titillated, i now feel as if i am discovering these things just as the protagonists are. shocked, appalled, dumb-founded.
I don't want to give anything away, this is more than a horror film. Richer in story and scope than many dramas. More chilling and gripping than many mystery stories. Set in a bleak, dusty town. You almost feel alone yourself. Lost in a desolate land. The film resolves itself in a perfect arch. I love that in a movie! Lake mungo has managed to balance the happy ending with tantalizing ambiguity. You must watch the final credits. I am a big fan of films that leave questions bubbling up in your bonce. Lake Mungo Does That!
Kuro no shishi (1992)
Nearly a Classic! But not quite.
The Black Lion is a somewhat misleading name, but aren't most anime title's somewhat obscure. If your looking for a graphics driven film, this is not the place to look. This picture does however have it's own charm though. The graphics aren't bad, they are just slightly dated. The dialogue could be better, although i never snorted with contempt over a poorly written line. I enjoyed the action but again it was a bit 80's. The thing that really got me into the film was the story. I have seen many of these type of pieces and there are some similarities, but again there always are. The scenes flowed seamlessly, action then dialogue leading to action again. I was surprised by the ending, which is always good. I would definitely recommend this to any fan's of the genre.
