The Frame (2014)
mind blown, heart wrenched
I was not expecting much.. just came across this by chance, and a couple hours later my body and mind are still trembling with the power and depth of this trip through the surreal. emotional, and visually stimulating, complete fantasy yet somehow touches a very real sense of ones being, and longing for redemption.. fulfillment..a search for completeness.
watching, feeling this movie was a profound experience for me, but I will not be surprised that it is not for everyone, or even anyone not prepared..open and patient, for it's magic to take you out of this world.
African Cats (2010)
fabulous visuals and moving drama
Nowhere have I ever seen a more dramatic and well balanced nature film. The depth and closeness into these animals lives and the moving narrative are unmatched IMO. I have read some of the negative reviews and frankly am stunned how anyone could come away from this beautiful film with anything less than a wonderful experience. the camera shots, the true 'story' ( as created by the animals), the music, the narration, all superb. this is as close to 'the lion king', all true to life, as you will ever see. these moments and bonds between the animals, the instincts, the scenes, it's truly amazing.
one reviewer listed in IMDb's 'critics' closed with 'i would rather see the avengers', to which i say - there are just different types of people in this world, can't make a fish like land.
i love nature shows, and the footage in some of the 'blockbuster' nature films (blue planet, earth, etc) is spectacular, and i love them too, but nowhere have I ever seen animals 'story' done so rich and true as this. to all who made this film - bravo, bravo!
Mildred Pierce (2011)
The finest in dramatic art, wonderful and moving
I was already a Kate Winslet fan, but this performance has put her on a very short list of those who I have ever been so moved, so filled with respect and admiration.
From the moment we first meet her skillfully making pies (old school like grandma) we see a woman who inspires respect. Her troubled marriage becomes apparent right off, but it's not the unreasonable, irrational type of modern day failed marriage relationship. They come to a mutual understanding that they are not happy married to each other, recognizing their own faults and personality differences that are not making for a happy marriage. He leaves her for another woman and while shocking to her, Mildred's inner strength gives you the feeling she'll find a way to manage, although at the most challenging time imaginable - depression era California! We watch as Mildred works hard to keep her 2 daughters cared for while trying to keep herself from falling into understandable depression.
I'll leave the rest for when the series finishes, but I have never seen better acting than in this series, and a large part of that is KW. I believe her performance brings this series to a level it would not have achieved without her. Of course I must credit the directing, writing, and the story itself, for all are wonderful. I could not imagine any fan of dramatic film not liking this series.
