The Grey (2011)

Manly movie but too linear
28 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts out being interesting enough but it becomes a little bit too predictable, more or less every 10minutes a character is lost, almost without exception. This makes the scenes feel scripted. Moreover it recycles character background stories as they die off, which is extremely strange for the viewer, what is the point of sharing information with us only after they die? It makes the death feel underwhelming.

The characters are also extremely weak, for example the protagonist is supposedly a wolf/survival expert but demonstrates no such skills in the movie, in fact he ends up leading everybody into danger and can ultimately be held responsible.

What is redeeming is the grit that is shown by the protagonist, even though the ends is underwhelming it is still a strong performance by Leeson, in fact he makes this whole thing worth watching. It also makes it feel like he wants to keep going so that he can honor the deaths of the other characters which is an interesting way of doing a payoff for the viewer but just as the viewer is expecting the payoff, the movie ends, which is a tragedy.

Good actors but weak plot
28 March 2024
It's an interesting movie that enthralls you but quickly veers off into the strange. The relationships between characters are poorly established in the beginning and because of this when the betrayals start it becomes extremely confusing to keep track and to know if those are real or not.

Additionally there are many layers of plans/betrayals to escape with money and the movie tries to portray them as very smart but there are moments where it ends up in weird gun fights which seemed like they are the result of failed planning.

Overall, it's a good light hearted flick that takes itself a little bit too seriously.

Curse move but rules are unclear
5 March 2024
I initially thought the movie had a sort of coherent structure or something like that but the longer it kept going, the more weird things kept happening, eventually it became obvious it was just random disconnected event.

Some outstanding questions: Why do some people get killed and then come back to life? For that matter, we have no idea what happened to some of them.

Why did the cops/major not do anything? I was expecting some kind of plot closure but it was just a scene and then no follow up.

What was the point of the no electricity and other rules? As far as I can tell, at no point did those rules make any difference. People who followed the rule all the way died.

Also weird, some of the kids seem to randomly get possessed and depossessed, that initial kid living with his mom for example. No pattern... no symptoms at any point... just says what he did in the end.

Also ultra weird: Why does everybody seem to know what a 'rotten' is? It's never explained, unless there is some Argentinian thing I am not aware of.

The protagonist makes repeatedly dumb decisions: 1) hides information about a monster coming to kill his family even though he was explicitly told it was coming 2) leaves a son he found out is possessed like 30 seconds ago with his mother 3) the only 'expert' in the whole movie gives him instructions not to listen to the children but because he is too lazy to remove a wooden floor, listens to the children...

Anyway don't recommend, the gore was okay and the filming is interesting but if the story sucks, there isn't much way around it.

Morality/Justice tale with cannibalism
4 March 2024
This movie has an odd kind of setup, what if Cannibalism actually worked? In the sense that it works as advertised by some tribes and really made men stronger to eat other men.

This movie is about the amoralist answer going against the moralist one. It is an interesting thought experiment as a movie and it does tackle it well.

The plot is unpredictable, twists and turns every half an hour or so. The protagonist has an odd melancholy about him, it seems like the only thing that lights him up is a sense of justice. Unable to communicate/hunt/shoot effectively until things become black and white.

Overall a good film.

A bit outdated but best werewolf movie out there
3 March 2024
The movie starts off in a strange tone, with typical couple in the woods scene but quickly takes a military turn. The are twists and turns to the movie from beginning to end, it has a masterful way of giving steadily keeping the story going.

The acting is all around solid, and the characters all have unique personalities. This is also done seamlessly, there are no real character development scenes, instead this is just gradually unveiled as the movie progresses, and given the nature of the film, the more each character survives, the more you get to know them.

On the weaknesses, the monsters don't look too good and some of the horror scenes could be improved upon. The plot doesn't quite give you as much detail as you would like. In fact it's a little strange that the family never makes an appearance and are only implied by photos. It seems strange to let your house be ruined in this way if you have been doing this for decades, you would think there is a cleaner way of proceeding.

All in all, a great movie for the horror fans out there.

Good pacing, good monster, good payoff
23 January 2024
One of the better horror movies in the last few years. First half is very well done, has a nice threatening atmosphere and it does well to build the relationships of the characters while at the same time establishing simple rules to constrain the monster. Maybe a little more on it's origin would have been fun.

Second half was a little weaker, I think they reveal the monster a little bit too early and they don't have enough victims. Some things should have been done a little slower. The result is that the monster feels a little too weak towards the end. More scenes in the bedroom should have been included to make sure signature is left.

Fresh approach
26 July 2023
The usual evil dead tropes are in here, necronomicon, manipulative dead, etc. The difference in setting, from cabin to apartment building is a nice change, the relationship between characters is also more meaningful than other evil dead movies.

This is much more slow paced and methodical than other evil dead movies. So there are fewer 'events' but there is more build up to them.

There are a few elements which are red herrings and improperly developed. All the secondary characters die within 1minute which is kind of weird, should have been developed more. There are some very convenient things that are not explained... specifically the truck with the chainsaw in the basement of an apartment building?

Solid but simple film
23 March 2023
There is something to be said about a film that stays on it's path and doesn't stray. From this point of view it is one of the best M Night film. When I saw him name, I assumed he would chicken out of his premise in the end.

The problem is that the film has too little dialogue to properly articulate something interesting. Initially there was a lot of emphasis on 'how do you know it's true' but then later on the characters just wholly embrace it, even though the new things they see don't contradict their existing theories. There are also some things that are never explained such the 'pre-recorded' message on tv or the light that popped up.

Overall it doesn't feel like the characters ever struggled with the knowledge part or the moral part of the story.

Great historical movie
19 March 2023
I can't really recall a movie which tells history in a better way than this film. It has good pacing, the acting is solid, and it doesn't botch the source material. At times the production values seem a bit low but this is just nitpicking. It is interesting that it gives us the perspective wholly from the American Indian perspective but I think that it is lacking a little bit of context. I would have liked to see more discussion about the forces that are getting them evicted or just linkages with the civil war.

There are two ways to tell this movie, really follow Sitting Bull from start to end with no other information other than what he knew, or widening the angle a but and giving the story more context. It unfortunately mixes the two and loses out by having both ways. Not personal enough, and not detailed enough.

Dark but funny?
11 March 2023
Pearl is a very strange movie. On the one hand it looks like the director makes efforts to have us sympathize with her, on the other he gives us fairly overt hints of just how odd she is.

The cinematography in this movie is gorgeous and gives this movie it's quirkiness. It is made in such a way to mirror Pearl's own outlook. Where the reality can be ignored in favor of dreamy aspirations that cannot be achieved. So there is a synergy in the character of Pearl and the way this is filmed.

Especially chilling is when Pearl finally expresses herself to the sister of her betrothed. The monologue she gives has this effect because the camera is focused on her throughout, and at the end of the 5 minutes we finally see the facial expression of the listener.

One of the better horror movies to come out in the last few years.

Interesting setup but ultimately disappointing
20 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The start of the movie is quite interesting. It seemed like a spiritual successor to IT follows: There is a curse that people get and then get tagetted by a monster. However, unlike 'it follows', the rules are never quite clearly spelled out. At some point we are told that murdering another person gets you out of the loop but this is actually never followed up on.

In probably the most memorable scene in the movie, the protagonist is talking to her psychologist, when she suddenly calls her, at which point you are supposed to realize that she is actually talking to the monster and she begins to run away. Amazingly though... she begins to run away down the stairs(into the house), and then... the movie cuts... like that scene never occured!

Perhaps most importantly, the writers of this movie seem unable to make a choice on where to take the movie and so play out both the scene where the monster is beaten AND the scene where the monster wins in the end. Ultimately, it just feels like they waste a good 20minutes of your time on a completely pointless scene that has no impact. Overall, the film is quite mediocre.

Flawed movied but very touching
17 January 2023
I finally got around to watching this. I can say I was very moved by the final scene and the characters. They really do all feel like very loving people and it's easy to get attached to them.

On the negative side, while the songs are independently quite good, most of them don't really help the flow of the film. That is, they don't move the story as they should. The two exceptions being dancing on the table and the final one, and it is not by coincidence that those are the two best scenes in the movie.

There are also some downright strange moments, like when the girlfriend asks her husband to care of the child and then somehow joins the group.

Anyway, a real gem of a movie but the components weren't mixed quite right.

It's alright
6 June 2022
Mostly watched because friends indicated they wanted to watch the new one.

I find the setting to be quite fun, very specific, they give a good vibe of the characters. The story is fairly basic, a bit predictable with its ups and downs but nothing to frown at.

Only thing I found a little bit nauseating was the combat scenes. I guess you can kind of tell what's going on because of the dialogue but really the plane shots are just really horrid, they don't communicate to the viewer what exactly is going on.

The best and last of the Craig bond movies
16 May 2022
Not a fan of these bond movies, Craig isn't a very convincing badass. It quite annoying to have car chases without any real car stunts.

The story was kind of weird, but I think it worked out nicely in the end, a bit romantic. It's just too bad it wasn't a shorter movie.

Nice visuals boring story
16 May 2022
This is a very scenic movie, with some beautiful desert shots. There is a lot boiling under the surface of the story but the the movie isn't able to articulate much of it.

The characters all seem kind of bland and boring which makes it kind of hard to care about the story. The only character who is remotely interesting is the evil noble but he doesn't get much screentime and it's kind of annoying how little information we get about him.

80% of the movie is spent in a desert mansion. That isn't interesting.

Maybe the other ones will be better.

The Batman (2022)

Probably the worst Batman movie to date
16 May 2022
Honestly, the Batman v Superman was supposed to be the worst Batman movie. Sure, the old Uma Thurman/Mr Freeze movie might have a worse plot, but the acting is so over the top it is entertaining to watch. Somehow this movie manages to surpass Batman v Superman, they do this by making Batman as boring as possible.

They downscale all of his theatrics = literally walking into every room without hiding presence.

Downscale his investigative skills = at no point does his detective skills move the plot, instead he just wait for the riddler's clues to arrive one by one.

Basically, his only value added in the movie is fighting people, which just makes me think these writers have superman envy. To top it all off the writers are basically using the movie to push political messaging and in the process downgrade characters, Riddler is basically right winger online who radicalizes the youth to attack the innocent good people.

Garbage movie all around.

I am so tired
16 May 2022
The nice thing about this new spiderman is that it tried to make the story a little more personal and downscale it. This all gets reversed in this movie, where they just try to shove as much stuff into the movie as they can, all the villains and lots of heroes... oh god... please make it stop.

We have seen too many of these movies, please stop Dinsey...

The Guilty (2021)

Interesting but ultimately unsatisfactory concept
16 May 2022
I am generally a big fan of movies that manage to contain their material to very little space like 12 angry men, rope, rear window etc.

This movie sets itself in a similar way, trying to establish characters on screen and allowing action to be developed in real time.

The problem is that the way information is given to the viewer is deceptive, such that it is quite clear after half an hour that the protagonist is working on faulty premises. In other words, unlike those other movies, the way they attempt to hook the viewer, is not with the suspense of gradual information reveletion but by trying to make the viewer have a false belief so that a twist can occur.

The above on it's own might not be sufficient to destroy the movie though. Perhaps a more serious problem is that there are too many things happening off screen such that the resolution of events does not ultimately feel satisfying. The protagonists life was ultimately never in danger and we never meet any of the other important characters.

Anyway, it's an interesting movie and Jake gives a great performance, I just don't think it ultimately comes together like the classics above.

Visions of degeneration
11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie about a young woman who is on the quest to find herself. It isn't clear if the movie intends to mock this pursuit but this is de facto what it does. A smart beautiful woman who has the whole world open to her is, in fact, paralyzed by that choice, such that she never commits to anything.

The film seems to be mocking the urban degeneracy that is today instilled into young women. Where you can have a great relationship, be in perfect health, and yet because you interpret children to be a sort of hedonistic thing, you don't take that choice.

This impression is further exacerbated by the hippy girlfriend in the movie. There are some undertones that at root, the protagonists father is to blame for her degeneracy, but since we view it from her perspective, there is not much analysis of trying to identify the cause of angst, but mostly there is simply her trying to decide what to do.

Instead, you decide to take pictures of other people for the rest of your life... which seems pathetic. Anyway, interesting movie, a bit long but a recommended watch.

A bit nuts but worth it
29 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Hm... first 50minutes: Car accident, stabbing stalker, sex with a car, mass murder co-worker and flatmates, burn parents, turn into a boy...

It's a redemption story, lost souls of sorts who find themselves and give meaning to each other. I am under there is some message about industrialization causing people to be disconnected but it's not very explicit.

It's a bit of a wild ride but I recommend it.

Good atmosphere but elements missing
29 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
From a horror point of view, this is a very interesting movie, mostly because the way the "monster" is portrayed is in fact angular. That is, you may see all the objects on the screen but seeing them from a certain angle is what creates the figure. As such, it feels much less cheap than other jump scare movies.

The problem is the story, the other characters barely play a role, they are introduced but not understood. At one point we see that there were multiple murders before the movie took place but we never even had an indication that peole died or disappeared in that town.

The "monster" of the movie is in fact barely developed, we have no idea what it IS or why it wants to do what it does, or even what exactly it can do for the whole film.

I recommend the movie, if only to see the fantastic performance of Hall.

A breath of fresh air
29 January 2022
This is one of the best tv shows to come out this last decade. It would not seem like it because there are only 8 10minutes episodes. But the show is so great because it really does give the minimum neccesary material to make the humor pack the strongest punch. No time wasted, respects the audience.

Almost all tv shows try to sucker you into them by making you want to spend time with the characters. In fact, it seems like all humor is of the kind "yeah this chararacter WOULD say that" kind of humor. Here, humor is situational, characters have their quirks but it is how their quirks create the situation which is funny, and not simply their expressions.

Highly recommended.

If you have to make it, the story can't be much better
23 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lot to like in this sequel. It follows the beats of the first Matrix but makes it a little more meta. The characters are not too developed so I think this is mostly for the fans of the original.

The one big let down was the action... I was surprised how bad the fighting scenes were. There is just too much stuff on the screen, Reeves is more of a magician than a warrior here.

Agents are also greatly deflated here, they kill nobody in the film, and almost everyone seems to have a reasonable chance against them.

The good parts are the Niobe character arc, and way they develop the story around the new city, the rescue mission, etc. Basically, everything in the Matrix is underwhelming and everything outside of it(the real world), is well done.

The feminist stalker
10 January 2022
A very curious little movie, with barely 6 characters present. There is an odd emphasis on music that gives the movie a lot of style. It's the main bonding instrument for the characters.

The protagonist seems like he does not control his environment in the begining and with the help of the girl, he gradually gains control of his car and his household, up until the end where it is shown that he is truly freed.

The filming also deserves a mention, because the directing is so slow, it really allows the actors the time to properly express their characters. It is incredible how much quality you can get for how little budget.

Boring all the way through
24 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The film was so mediocre that both me and my companion predicted that he must have gotten somebody in an awkward position after 20 minutes of movie time, in fact it's almost as if the whole film is structured around that one Rudy scene. In theory it's interesting that you catch a politician in an awkward position and instead of just releasing a the clip, you make a whole film around it. But in practice, the whole film is a chore, full of cringe and not funny moments. Sacha is clearly just a leftist who is triggered by Trump, and while this isn't a problem in itself, it's quite clear he can't express this in a very creative way, probably the worse thing he has made to date. It also seems to me that unlike the original Borat, a much higher proportion of people in the film are actors, and this kills a lot of the humor. I find it really quite strange that so many people revere who thrives on mocking humiliating people after lying and manipulating them to be in awkward position, at the very least it seemed like the harm was bounded when it wasn't political.
