It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
Meh.....
I honestly watched this on cable just because i saw Zac Gailifianakis. Then i thought i was gonna watch a comedy, and then i realized i was not. Since i'm open minded about that, i gave it a shot. I ended up watching a teen version of "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" or even "Girl, interrupted". Seriously, the "i'm crazy and i'm gonna do crazy things" scene, the rebel "let's do this cause is not allowed" scene, the girl, the weird patients that do not recover... there's even a turntable (for some reason...21st century anyone? a teenager?) and an ethnic roommate with a final revelation. Cast is fine, not great, but fine. Even Viola Davis with just a few lines. And the main good thing i got from it is that it left me singing Queen's "Under pressure" for the rest of the day. That's it.
50/50 (2011)
Laughter and tears at th same time
Well, first of all, is not a black comedy. It's more like Terms of Endearment (which is actually mentioned once) meets Superbad. And that's maybe not original, but is still awesome. It is a tear-dropper, but is not gonna kill you. Still, you gotta be prepared and might wanna watch this by yourself if you're ashamed of crying in public.
What a great actor Joseph Gordon Lewitt is turning into! All of the cast was perfect, even Bryce Dallas Howard whose work i'm not a fan of, delivers a realistic and bitchy girlfriend. I couldn't imagine other actress playing the mom but A. Houston. Anna Kendrick was decent as well and Seth Rogen was funny as usual, as the best friend who's fat, drunk, stoner and wants to score all the time. However, i'm kinda hoping this is his last part like this, to avoid being typecast. It's about time.
Get ready for touching scenes (the one in the car, the books, that mom...) and funny ones too. Not ha-ha funny, but chuckle nerdy funny. In fact, there is ad lib and pop cultural references throughout the movie, but just the right amount. And Pearl Jam fans like myself, will be surprised...
Sorry if i don't sound like a hard ass-critic wannabe, but this is one of the best movies of 2011.
Melancholia (2011)
I liked it. No, i'm not a hipster.
I just finished watching. I did know what to expect from a Lars Von Trier film, cause i've seen some of his work. Like Dancer in the dark, which i cannot watch without crying at the end. I've read some of the other user reviews and i also think that the rating of this film is accurate. But i always focus on the negative reviews, whether i like the movie or not. Not to troll or anything, just to see different point of views that may help me to empathize, disagree or maybe understand something i missed. Based on those "hated" reviews, here's what i think, in the only way i can express it---a list:
1- That thing that some people call "shaky camera" in a filmmaker like Von Trier it's his language. He created the Dogma 95 movement in the 90's and the hand-held camera was one of its features. Off course this is not a dogma movie, but to underestimate the camera work as "shaky camera" as if this was "Battle LA" is just....rude.
2- What is so wrong with using a different pace? What is so wrong about symbolism? Why would Justine be depressed about something in particular? Why do sisters have to look alike? Seriously, it may sound rude, but is not and Adam Sandler movie. It is what it is.
3- Acting was great. Not only Dunst, who won Best Actress at Cannes for this role (yeah, besides the "Nazi-VonTrier scandal", there were awards) but Sutherland and Gainsburg deliver strong and deep performances. It wouldn't surprise me to see them at the Academy Awards.
4- It moved me and i'm not depressed or anything. As another Von Trier movie and myself a fan of symbolism, for me it was about cancer. The depression, Justine weakness, the big thing coming, the thing disappearing, then coming back and the undeniable and helpless end. There is no more life, no matter what we do.
To enjoy this title you don't have to be depressed, to be on heroin, to love Kirsten Dunst or Von Trier previous work. You just have to open up your mind.
The Switch (2010)
A movie with Jeniffer Aniston on it
This how i actually let someone know what i'm watching on a Saturday afternoon. And they get it. Because for some reason, Rach...i mean Jennifer Aniston has become over the years in the most profitable sidekick for warm and sweet rom-coms and fart comedies. Basically, on this one she wants to get pregnant, buys some sperm, throws a party for it (yeah...), her exboyfriend-now-best-friend Jason Bateman gets wasted and (kinda jealous too) empties the recipient with the "seed" and replaces the "seed" with its own. Next morning he doesn't remember any of it, she moves back to MN and never sees her again. Until 7 years later when she moves back and has a 6 year old that is a little douche, so Bateman remembers the switch, the seed and wonders if maybe the douche is his own. Comedy is hard, not for everyone. And this one is not hilarious, but has some great moments, specially those when Juliette Lewis is on screen, she is great and funny. Comedies SHOULD be her next step, for sure.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Raise your fist if you feel threatened
When i first read on ifc.com that this movie was being made and James Franco was starring, the disappointing Tim Burton remake came to my mind. A few months later, i saw the first movie poster, showing Caesar's fist up high, in a "fight tha power" kinda way. Everything seemed laughable and destined to fail. Well, nope. There was a pretty good script, the amazing Andy Serkis as Caesar and the main goal: respect. Respect for the apes, the pace, the audience, the previous movies and cinema itself. I didn't get these kinda feelings at a theater since Children of Men (2005). Not just the great story to tell, acting, FX and respectable score: they give you one of those priceless moments when EVERY SINGLE PERSON at the room stops eating pop corn, texting, making stupid remarks and they just shut up for 3 seconds, shocked over what just happened on the screen. The "Rosa Parks Moment" will become a classic. There, i said it... And if Andy Serkis is not -at least- nominated at the Oscars it would be really unfair. An enjoyable piece of art, that can make you believe in Hollywood again.
Disaster Movie (2008)
How could they??
I finished watching this title and i felt really sorry for Nicole Parker. She has the only few enjoyable seconds with her impressions, in this huge load of farts-puke-underwear-awful-parodies that Disaster movie is. I really don't know how these guys get their scripts thumbed up. And really don't know what these guys feel for the comedy genre., i'm seriously thinking that they probably hate it.
Nevertheless, there are a few jokes that can be rescued from this dark, deep, smelly lack of talent ocean (as i said, most of them delivered by Parker), but they are poorly executed on every single frame.
This title is not only a waste of time, even if you catch it on cable on a Sunday at 6pm, but also a huge insult to people and to previous "movie" movies with better results, such as "Not another teen" or the "Scary" ones, volume 1,2 and 3.
Seltzler or whatever his name is and the other guy, should go and sell hot dogs for a living.
Plan B (2009)
Great, great, great movie
This title skips every cliché in "gay" cinema, and it all comes down to a beautiful "bromance" story. The guys don't look flawless or run into a promiscuous gay club to dance shirtless, do drugs and get wasted, as soon as they realize they enjoy...male company. This movie also brings you back to puberty, a time when one probably wouldn't do weed, but one can talk to a friend for hours, goof around and innocence is still allowed.
There's something kinda annoying on the building shots, with some kind of a background huming sound that could've been avoided, but is not that much of a big deal. It just makes no difference if they're there or not, and it would actually help with the pacing of the story.
The guy playing Bruno is just awesome. Do watch this movie, over and over again.
