Yokai ningen bem (1968)
Remembering childhood frights
that's right, i happened to be living in Rome in the eighties although i am from Argentina(that explains my lame English) I was about 7 or 8 when i saw the Bem's anime, keep in mind that this is from the 60's but Italy bought barely every anime ever done since they where big success in this country. the animation was cheap but despite that i remember being overwhelmed by the mood ,the atmosphere that u could literally breath from this series I recall an episode regarding a haunted abandoned train car being particularly spooky ,the sounds helped a lot too, flutes and instruments like that where utilized for the soundtrack. So despite the cheap animation the obvious care that the makers of this anime took for traing to inspire u horror took the cartoon in a very good level. Living now in Argentina it's for me impossible to watch it again, But how i would love to!
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
PERFECT.
The Texas chainsaw massacre is, in my opinion, the best horror movie ever and I'd like to see if I can tell why in few words and a foreign language. What did Tobe Hooper do to achieve such a perfect movie it's what i often wonder. I'm sure the hiper-realistic look the film has it's the base of it all, the photography is truly natural, no lights are positioned to give an image of threat nor there are creepy sound-tracks warning you that something bad is going to happen. The day, afternoon and night are not stormy, there are not eerie lightning , the house of the Sawyer family it's quite a regular country house ,of course inside they already redecorated it whit them particular taste, but that's totally believable because it is the doing of mad men. In fact there is a reason on why the house decoration and the character of Leatherface strike as totally original and believable and that is because they where conceived by maybe one of the most deranged man of all times, the psycho supreme, the Plainfield Wisconsin butcher, mr. Ed Gein. For those unfamiliar with the name he was the famous serial killer whose "work" inspired Robert Bloch writer of the novel "Psycho" and Tomas Harris creator of the Hannibal Lecter trilogy "Red Dragon" "Silence of the lambs" and of course "Hannibal". Yes ,one man alone. So even the most horrible facts of the movie are based on true events. Plus the actors that played the young victims did an outstanding job in the movie. The academy owes actress Marilyn Burns an Oscar for her performance, she screams and cries in such a way that the horror she is feeling is contagious. She makes you feel the madness she witness with those screams, she and the other victims were surely a big part in making the movie as realistic as possible. The movie in resume was filmed in a way that showed pretty much how would it look if any of us had the dubious honour of being invited at dinner by the Sawyer family. The unreal it's a factor that may seem ideal to help a movie being scary but it has to be carefully dosed or the thing would seem unlikely to actually happen. That is something that Hooper knew by instinct. He mastered those limits. Well i think it's enough since i am having a headache trying to express my feelings in a language i do not know to well, so I'll try not to give you one by reading more of this poor English. Though i hope i have made my point clear even if i feel i could never explain in words how much i love this movie.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
The sadness it´s it all.
I like Rob Zombie music ,video clips and his concept of esthetics so when i found out that he was doing an horror movie ,starring Bill Moseley of Texas chain saw massacre 2,Army of Darkness and other horror films i love ,i started really looking forward for it. Now i have recently seen it, and i am quite disappointed... In the fifties , in Plainfield, Wisconsin, a lonely gentlemen by the name of Ed Gein was doing some bizarre stuff to a few women he knew from the area,
and also whit some other that he dig up from the local cemetery... redecorating his house and his own dressing, little knowing that he was creating a genre of culture in many of it's different ways. What they call american gothic . It inspired many movie directors, writers, comic book artists, painters ,sculptors, musicians ..u name it. In 1974 Tobe Hooper, a young director ,made what i find to be the most shocking horror movie of all time:The texas chainsaw massacre. In this amazigly ,almost hard to believe well made movie he totaly caught the infinite and true horror in which mr.Gein had sunk. His struggle to be normal ,despite is abominable and undeniable nature of true and helpless human monster. This characteristics are much more evident in the most Gein character of the flick,Leatherface, and also a lot in the Drayton Sawyer character.Edwin Neal playing Hitchhiker was ,instead, representing the total insanity left loose and making it even harder for his brothers not to succumb to the wild side. But that´s the core of it . The sadness of a monster trying to pose as "normal".The horror that result from the failure of achieving that, and the horror that it's very attempt spawns. All of it orchestred whit the outstanding performances by Marilyn Burns and Jim Siedow. Hooper recreated the horror genre and inspired a whole lot of other people ,among them Rob Zombie. But in his movie he limits him self to show of much he likes the genere and how much he knows the movies that builted it,and i truly think that he realy knows his stuff. But by simply shot the movie in this basis,u get a lot of cool looking characters, wandering in a even more cool looking sets, whit super looking cinematography. But i am afraid that´s empty. I have got no feelings nor passion from it,and maybe that´s because being something like Ed Gein was far from cool. Still i love the horror genre and it is my favorite ,so i cant´help but feeling admiration for Rob Zombie and the people that bets on it. And maybe as Ed wood used to answer when he was told that their movies where bad mr Zombie could answer me " the next one will be better!". Or maybe he would answer me nothing that nice...
Sonora (1968)
pretty cool
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Sonora it´s a very entertening spaghetti western ,it´s script makes not much sense ,the bad guys have plenty chances to kill the good guy and waste them all, things happens whit out reason and the main bad guy falls for a trick he invented himself...no i am not kidding i truly find the movie to be cool and entertening ,this are just tipical things to find in pretty much all of the italian western ,but surely enough the directors decided to ignore them in order to priorize the action, dramatic shots, smart lines and original duels ,if u are a fan of them u will find plenty in this film, plus the very well written character of Kirchner it´s a lot of fun and gets the best lines. Well if u are willing to see a tipical spaghetti-western u may consider this one,but remember just lay back and enjoy!..oh and sorry for my english...
