The Portable Door (2023)
Fun and interesting
I love Christopher Waltz and Sam Neil! Great performances from both actors. The music and soundtrack was excellent and really helps make the movie. Was hoping for more Jim Henson creature shop additions other than prosthetics. Loved the magical aspect and it surprised me several times so it's nice to not have a completely predictable movie. Would like to see a lot more movies like this, especially when it seems the market is over flooded with remakes and superheroes (though I do love most of the superhero movies). Think one of favorite aspects was the development of the romantic relationship since it wasn't as cliche as I've been used to seeing.
Love in the Villa (2022)
Female lead was totally unsympathetic and obnoxious
The character of Julie felt more like a villain and I just felt bad for all of the bad stuff she put Charlie through. She took out all of her frustrations of her failed relationship and bad trip on him when he was an innocent bystander and he felt bad enough for her to let her stay in the flat. She repays him by giving him a severe allergic reaction and getting him arrested which could have cost him his job. The stuff she did to him was far worse than what he did to her and when the romance started to suddenly "spark" between them for really no reason I couldn't find myself invested. Felt like she deserved to end up alone in the end because she's a horrible person. For how awful she was to him there is no way they would end up together, ever. Completely unbelievable story and development.
Speed Racer (2008)
Total 10 when on edibles
All of the bright color and cartoonish effects are really fun under the right circumstances. ;) Even if not under the influence, it can still be a real fun movie especially when it feels like it's making fun of itself. Was a fan of the original show so I liked the movie for that fact alone but the other factors take it over the top, just like the effects. A fun ride, just like the one the race cars have. It's like a more colorful family friendly Sin City. Much of the movie is like riding a rainbow. It is probably the most colorful movie there is. The plot stands on its own even if it is often overshadowed by obvious ridiculousness.
The Munsters (2022)
Only for fans of original show.
I loved the show growing up so I found it a lot funnier than my husband who had never seen it. Movie was made as if it was on a tv show set, very small scale. The acting was purposefully over the top, it is definitely not supposed to be taken seriously, think of it as more of a parody and you will enjoy it more. The movie seems to be constantly making fun of itself. The way it ends make you think that there might be a sequel in the future, but you kind of hope there won't be. One of these movies is enough. I think it would be much harder to make fun of your own movie when it becomes a sequel. Most of the jokes are obvious graveyard type humor so as long as you enjoy "halloween" jokes, you will find them funny, though at the same time they are supposed to be not REALLY funny either.
Pinocchio (2022)
Probably one of the worst Disney adaptions yet
The only good things about the movie were Tom Hanks and the way Pinocchio looked. Pinocchio had no real growth over the course of the movie, instead of making bad decisions it just seemed he got put in bad situations by bad luck. He didn't turn into a real boy at the end which is the whole point of the story. Monstro just looked beyond ridiculous, like a giant squid whale. I did like Luke Evans' part but that's just mostly bias for the actor. It felt like there was no point of anything they experienced by the end of the movie because there were no lessons learned. I definitely understood why they decided to not put it in theaters.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Not perfect but a pretty good adaption
It wasn't as good as the universal live action that came out almost 20 years ago but it is FAR better than the one with Hugh Jackman. They made Wendy more than just a damsel in distress and the pirate sea shanty's were catchy, do wish they would have included the "you can fly" or "second star to the right" though. Tigerlily was a powerful character as well. Peter Pan has always been a deeply flawed character and this showcased that and allowed him to actually show real growth as apposed to superficial growth of the animated counterpart. A beautifully diverse cast really rounds out the film, it was definitely a better adaption from Disney compared to Pinocchio which was a major disappointment.
Leapin' Leprechauns! (1995)
Loved these movies as a kid.
I have been wanting to rewatch this for years but I can never find it streaming anywhere. I remember I used to watch it and the sequel on Disney Channel so I used to hope it would make its way to Disney+ since there really aren't a lot of St Patrick's Day type movies to watch, especially with kids.
I'm sure the special effects are probably dated but if it could just get released on a platform I'm sure it could become a campy cult classic. There are definitely worse movies that became cult classics for the laugh factor. This had a sweet story and the boy character was someone kids could connect with, without being too juvenile for adults to enjoy.
Tall Girl (2019)
Toxic men everywhere
I have usually enjoyed Netflix's teen romances but this one bothered me the whole way through. The "nice guy" basically claims ownership of the main girl because he's always been in love with her and even though she's told him "no" repeatedly, he never gives up. He even goes so far to sabotage a potential relationship with someone she's actually interested in and I think he is the reason why that guy turned into by following his terrible advice. The scene where he goes into her room while she's sleeping is just creepy. He even says that he would wait for her forever even though she didn't want him at all. This movie tells guys everywhere that you can wear a girl down and to never take no for an answer. This guy had even an opportunity to move on with someone that actually liked him, but he wanted what he couldn't have.
The dad wasn't much better because he kept basically saying there was something wrong with his daughter the way she is, though at least he realizes his errors.
The main guy that the girl wanted, even though he was following the very bad advice of the other guy, it doesn't absolve him of being him either.
This movie is garbage.
