America or Australia?
19 August 2019
I'll keep my review of this bad student film brief. The plot, story and acting are amateurish but it's the bizarre use of American accents that baffles me. It's an Australian film (obvious by the use of right hand drive cars, Aussie accented voice mail and the BIG sign that says Surrey Hills police station, yet they insist on making the actors speak in dreadful American accents? An obvious attempt at a Jigsaw ripoff that is cheap and flimsy. And those accents again! We're the film makers hoping to sell this overseas? Dear God....

A New Convert
14 April 2004
To be totally honest I never liked Merrick and Rosso's comedy until this show, they're two previous attempts at sketch comedy style shows Planet Merrick & Rosso and Super Planet Merrick & Rosso just never hit a funny nerve with me, however since becoming a convert through this show it would be interesting to see these two shows as well as take time out to listen to their radio programes and see what I now make of it all. This show is thoroughly entertaining, it features Merrick & Rosso sitting on a couch answering audience questions amongst other things and their brand of natural on the spot ad lib humour really works.

Very Refreshing and highly recomended

Girls on Top (1985–1986)
7/10
A damn funny show
26 April 2003
Four of the funniest comics around (Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Tracy Ullman and Ruby Wax) all together in one show? Hilarity abounds!

Girls on top has these four lasses playing four flatmates in a flat owned by Lady Carlton (Joan Greenwood).

Dawn French plays Amanda Ripley, hypocritical left-wing feminazi with a secret hobby of keeping pictures of penises in a box under her pillow.

Jennifer Saunders plays slow witted and childlike Jennifer Marsh who lives in a corner of the lounge room and is constantly victimized and bossed around by Amanda

Ruby Wax is failed American actress Shelly DuPont, who has a habit of being the annoying character that you wish would sometimes just tone it down a notch.

And Tracey Ullman plays (in the first series only) Bimbotic Candice Valentine.

Watching these four and Joan Greenwood in a show for which the script was edited by Ben Elton is certainly one of the funniest shows to grace television screens.

Come back GIRLS.

Tori Amos Live from NY (1998 Video)
10/10
Breathtaking, Astounding and that stuff
22 April 2003
Up to the point in time I am writing from, I am yet to experience a Tori Amos concert in person. But this feature is easily the next best thing. Tori performs perfectly to an incredibly appreciative crowd by offering up some of her most beautiful, haunting, touching and powerful songs like "Caught A Lite Sneeze", "Leather", "little Amsterdam", "Cornflake Girl" and many others, she even included the techno-ish backing when performing "Talula".

Accompanying Tori in this concert are Steve Caton on guitar (whatever happened to him, why doesn't he play for/with her anymore?) and includes a guest appearance from Tool's Maynard James Keenan.

Of course the most breathtaking moments are during performances of "Silent All These Years" and "Me and a Gun" which are perfectly fitting given that the show was a fundraising benefit for the RAINN organization that Tori co-founded.

This is one of my few 10/10 highly recommended picks

Intriguing and weird
20 April 2003
I think the word weird isn't out of place in a review of this particular film, although the film itself is not exactly weird, or wasn't intended to be, the personality of it's subject is more than a little erratic.

Her personality and certainly the viewers perception of her does change throughout the documentary, she goes from confidant and intelligent (and you can't help but respect her this) she seems to know what she's doing and what she wants, but as the film progresses she becomes this confused, unstable and quite pathetic individual, who more than anything seeks her mother's respect and approval, but really doesn't want to work for it.

The film is definately intriguing, but not as a look at the world of porn, for the industry itself isn't the focus of this film, it focuses mainly on just one of it's members, Grace Quek aka Annabel Chong

Recomended viewing

A Place for Annie (1994 TV Movie)

Another bad social-conscience movie
6 April 2003
Yes that is basically what this movie is whether you liked the film or not.

I personally did not.

I found it to be patronizing, overly technical and just so damn sappy the important message of the film was almost (but not entirely) drowned under the thick treacle coating and so-so acting.

Why such a brilliant actress like Sissy Spacek continues to make films like this is beyond me, apart that important little word beginning with M (money if you're wondering).

By watching this film you get the idea that it is there to not just educate and make people aware of the situation regarding HIV babies, but to draw it out into a long and almost boring sermon.

Though I do understand and appreciate the fact that this film is appealing to quite alot of viewers, I can only give my opinion by stamping it "BAD".

Eraserhead (1977)
10/10
Lynchian Brilliance
6 April 2003
Eraserhead was the debut release for arty film director David Lynch.

The film is shot in black and white with generally (at the time) unknown actors like Laurel Near, Charlotte Stewart and John Nance.

What the film is actually about is open to interpretation but watching the film, one can't help but find some misanthropic view of a post apocalyptic world where mundanity has turned into something truly horrific.

John Nance stars as Henry Spencer, the films big-haired hero, Henry is followed on a strange course of events made strange by David Lynche's bizarre take on normality. Henry finds out he has a child (a strange alien looking creature), gets married, has an affair, and even, in a metaphorical blurr, has his head turned in to erasers for pencil tips.

Eraserhead is truly an experience to be sat through, though what you'll actually make of it, is anyones guess.

STOP GIVING J-LO WORK!!!!
2 April 2003
Ralph Fiennes must've been paid an incredible amount of money to lower his standards and star in this instantly and thankfully forgettable film about a maid who is mistaken for a rich girl only to be seduced by a rich politician who doesnt know her true identity, and so on and so forth.

I personally found this movie boring, cringeworthy and predictable.

I also personally don't see what's so interesting about miss Lopez, okay so she's attractive so are alot of people, my nextdoor neighbour's not bad but i wouldn't wanna see her pretending to act either!

I honestly do like a good light hearted comedy as much as the next guy, but light-hearted shouldn't equal bloody awful!

Degrassi High (1987–1991)
And the memories come flooding back
28 March 2003
Wow, I used to LOVE this show when i was a kid, i would eagerly await it after school each day and i was never let down, nor was I ever put off by the warning that preceeded each episode.

A vast array of emotions were experience by myself over the years whilst watching the series.

I was shocked when Spike got pregnant, was in hysterics when Joey walked through the cafeteria wearing nowt but a strategically placed hat, i was struck with disbelief when Claude did himself in in the toilets, and smiled when Yik and Arthur got hold of a porn film.

Oh the good old days eh? the new series could never compete.

The Making of Nothing (1993 TV Movie)

Hilarious viewing

This was an absolute riot, the Fast Forward team get together, bringing some of their well known characters as well as some new ones to give us a movie about the making of a film.

Magda and Jane are brilliant as per usual as are the rest of the gang.

This film is a bit hard to come by nowadays, though it still gets played now and then on The Comedy Channel in Australia.

HIGHLY reccomended viewing.

Ashamedly, I LOVED IT!
8 March 2003
This movie was senseless, vile, offensive (or too dumb to be) and all of those other put downs you will read by people on here, and I don't know about anyone else, but to me that is just fine, once in a while a movie like this is needed, just stupid and thoughtless, the same feeling you get when breaking a diet by eating pizza until you vomit. A good film, with plenty of opportunities for people with twisted and cruel senses of humour to flex their laughing muscles.

Death Ship (1980)

Not as bad as they say
8 March 2003
This is one of those movies I saw as a kid, was terrified by and have been trying to find ever since.

I finally obtained a copy and watched it again for the first time in twenty years.

Until that moment though, I had sought out various opinions of the movie on the internet, the place where everyone has an opinion on everything, and I must say, the majority of comments I recieved were less than encouraging, however my mission would not be swayed.

Now, here I am having seen this obscure little flick again and I must say, it wasnt as bad as all that.

I think the sense of atmosphere and eeriness, while quite tacky, were effective and charming.

One scene that stood out in my mind since that fateful night I watched it as a child, is where Mrs. Morgan eats that poisoned lollie, turns into some creature, is killed and tossed overboard. Ah joyous memories

HIGHLY RECOMENDED
