Thappad (2020)
Good intentions, bad execution.
Ok, I get it, domestic violence is horrible and completely unacceptable but what about giving second chances, especially to your life partner? The hero was not that much of a ruthless husband afterall that you can't even give him another chance to get his act together, review his misconduct and get his priorities right to make it a happier & healthier relationship. The story keeps escalating in negative direction, giving the right message at start but sets a very harmful example by the end. The hero respects his wife's parents, always greets them with 'charan sparsh or namaste', easily lets go of his ego and tries to get his upset wife back from her parents' house, accepts his mistake of 'thappad' and tries to make amend, yet the actress can't love him again or give him another chance to prove his redemption. Who is perfect in this world? Who has a perfect life in this world? Who doesn't do something bad and morally unacceptable in a moment of weakness or heat but then regrets it? If you live your life according to this film's story writer or director's logic, you will end up alone, like majority of the characters of the movie in the end.
To sum up my disappointment with the movie ending, I will just leave a statement from a married couple of 55yrs marriage. "We believe the main reason we could stay married for so long is because in our times, when something needed fixing, we fixed it rather than replacing it like you do in today's times"!
Chhichhore (2019)
'3 Idiots' meets 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar'
I found this movie very captivating and entertaining. Not too much vulgarity in it, so kind of a family entertainer as well, which is unfortunately very rare in Bollywood these days, especially in a movie targeted at younger audiences!
Overall, its a highly recommended one time watch. I kept feeling mixed vibes of '3 Idiots' and 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar' throughout the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Still I am giving it 7 / 10 as I personally didn't find the direction absolutely perfect and I also wasn't highly impressed by Sushant Singh Rajput in lead role (especially as a mature uncle). I personally feel someone else like Varun Dhawan in lead role would've changed the movie a lot for the better.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)
Must see, especially for the younger ones!
To be honest I wasn't very impressed with the 1st movie of this franchise, it just felt like most other generic animated movies coming out these days, aimed at entertainment and commercial value and not much else to gain out of them.
So, I had my doubts over the 2nd movie (this one) but for some reason decided to give it a go on a lazy Saturday afternoon to watch something light and easy but to my surprise by the end of the movie I was completely submerged into a whole different World along with lots of bittersweet emotions. What impressed me the most is that the movie was full of many meaningful messages for everyone, especially the younger ones. We are growingly witnessing that the new generation is constantly growing apart from the traditional values and wisdom of the society and as a consequence the day to day life is becoming increasingly dangerous and ruthless.
I would highly recommend everyone to enjoy this movie with the whole family and spread the word if you also feel that there should be more such movies with important life lessons rather than focusing on just pure entertainment value.
Laal Rang (2016)
Couldn't finish it!
I only decided to see the movie on Youtube because I bumped across the suggestion on IMDB while rating another Bollywood movie. When I saw 8+ overall user ratings fot this movie, a quick search on Youtube was enough to find the movie available to watch for free. I started watching it and by every passing minute I kept thinking, "it should get better any minute now" but after watching it for about 30mins I was forced to give up any expectations or hopes of the movie to get any better and fonally abandoned it instead of wasting any more time.
The movie feels very filmy and script it weak and there is no character development or chemistry happening. Everything just falls into place without any reason or logic, simply because it would suit the actor (Oberoi) and the script writer. Like the big BHAI like figure, who knows police and also college administration becomes a very good pal with this NOBODY new kid in the college for no reason. Also, the actress also falls for him just like that, typical Bollywood script at its best. Imagine whatever and yhe audiences are supposed to accept whatever you present to them and enjoy it because it allows them to ESCAPE away from their own struggles. Come on, make something worth remembering instead of mass producing average movies Bollywood.
Pet Sematary (2019)
A decent horror flick
Saw it in cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you scroll through the comments, most bad ratings are people complaining its not as good as the novel itself. Well, stick to reading novels then, why expect a movie to compare to a novel simply you're a book worm? Although a bit predictable at times, the movie had enough jump scare scenes, decent twists, a good creepy and dark overall atmosphere, decent acting from all the cast and as many comments suggested, the ending could've been better but you do leave the cinema with a satisfied feeling of getting your money's worth of entertainment.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017)
Good for some giggles but overall passable
Ayushman's movies are generally entertaining, so is this one but there are many absurd and totally unrealistic scenes in this movie which eventually make it an unrelatable and forced entertainer. It has some feel good moments in the 1st half where the humble beginnings of the couple's romance are shown but from about half way onwards the movie starts going down hill really fast with some complete bullsh!t concepts such as the couple trying to have $ex in a room while both their extended families are waiting outside to see the outcome etc, it doesn't even happen in the Western countries, let alone in a spiritual place such as Haridwar, India.
So, its such stupid storytelling which will put off any logical viewer. The movie does, however, portray some very interesting life situations such as the virtue of patience and loyalty; what true love really means; erectile dysfunction as a sensitive medical issue etc. On the topic of ED, the director has missed a good opportunity to give a good message to the youth of India. In one scene the hero is offered a cigarette by his regular chai-wala, indicating that he smokes and smoking is a strong contributor of causing ED in men. Director could've included this fact in a decent scene between the patient (hero) and a proper doctor instead of the veterinarian, as shown in the film. Thus, it is an ok film overall but it could've been made much more intelligently and smarter rather than the slapstick drama it presented in an effort create forced comedy.
Chal Man Jeetva Jaiye (2017)
Good enough but more philosophical than convincing
After seeing such high ratings for this movie on IMDB, I was expecting to be highly impressed but sadly I didn't. Infact, it is so far from 9 out of 10 (it's current rating) that I think most of reviews are fake reviews written by the production company. One reviewer goes as far as to suggest an Oscar nomination for this movie, REALLY!?!
It is however a good enough movie and all the lead actors are amazing but in the end the movie lacks conviction and its also full of plotholes. How does such a legendary business empire suddenly loses everything? How does a reporter sneaks into the house unnoticed despite of so many security guards at the gate? Infact, the reporter literally breaks into the house which will easily land him in jail for trespassing. Will a reporter really be so stupid to risk jail time to get some live footage? Will the police really patiently wait outside the house despite of having an arrest warrant? Will other extremely spoilt youngsters of the house really, without throwing any tantrums, just agree to live a simple life when they've never seen any compromise in their life?
The list of plotholes can be so much bigger but I do not want to get into too much criticism because the movie is good enough overall and it does have good enough content to keep you interested and also impress in many different aspects. The direction is good and unique and cinematography is also decent. In the end, I would say this movie is a one time watch or even twice if you are very impressed by all the philosophical, ideological and psychological drama. I will give it an honest 6 out of 10 in my opinion.
Thai Jashe! (2016)
Full of emotions but a bit draggy at times
A good family movie night type movie. It has a very simple subject but you can relate to the subject as per your own personal version / experience of a big target or goal in life which kept testing your character every step of the way ("1 sandho ne 13 tootey") but through endless determination and help of a few good people and most of all, just before it all seems like a lost battle, a final stroke of luck, or devine intervention or parental blessings you finally achieve that target and it literally shapes you into a person you will be for the rest of your life!
If you have experienced any massive struggle like that in life, this movie will surely take you into your past and give you tears! It reminds you to appreciate where you are today so it is kind of a feel good movie overall. It is directed with a lot of heart but the director has lost momentum in quite a few scenes which were kind of unnecessary or too long than they should have been, especially many scenes with Hero's Hindi speaking office colleague really annoyed me and just felt like a waste of time. May be its the editing which hasn't been efficient enough and as a result the movie does get a bit boring or feels too long at times but if you hang on and keep believing in it, it soon becomes interesting again to keep you going till the end, kind of ironic because thats exactly how a big struggle (the soul of the storyline) also tests your patience throughout the journey!
The Nun (2018)
Full of jump scares!
See this movie if you want to see an entertaining horror movie without applying too much mind and having good cinematography and lots of jumpscares. Avoid it if your type of movies always need to make sense without any plot holes. If you enjoyed The Conjuring you will enjoy The Nun too. I rated The Conjuring 9/10 and this one 7/10.
