The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
The design! Oh the design!
First of all let me just say: it is gorgeous. Everything you can see throughout the series is just so marvelously crafted. It's beautiful. You can literally see the money spent. I was going to say, this is probably the most beautiful series I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, but no. This is definitely it.
As for the rest: You need to know that I am a very emphatic person and also a huge Tolkien fan (for as many decades I can give you), and so I can I feel that I understand where all the naysayers are coming from. BUT. It shouldn't diminish the values of this series. If you are looking for a word-to-word representation of what is written in the Appendices and the Silmarillion, then yes, you will be disappointed on some occasions. But then again, you will be delighted on others. While the story adds and twists some parts to the mythology, I believe that it stays true to its core.
As a standalone series, RoP is good. Well above the avarage. As I said before, it is gorgeous, it doesn't change the basis of all Tolkien myth, it has good characters and even though it take liberty at interpreting the story of the Second Age, it does so honorably.
I strongly don't believe that the current rating I'm seeing represents the real value of the series. It is a solid 8, more likely a 9.
It is well worth your time and it is a fitting tribute to J. R. R. Tolkien I should say.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
A good watch with some magic, but enough Depp(th)
Let me start with what everyone is talking about: Depp vs Mikkelsen as Grindelwald. While I sat in the theatre with an open mind, ready to accept a new (and great) actor in the role, at the end of the movie me and my frinds unanimously agreed, that it's Depp. 100% Depp.
While Depp's antagonist had this aura of unexpected craziness and magic about him, this strong charismatic leader vibe that made you understand why people and Dumbledore fell for him. Mikkelsen's was just... generally evil. Bland and unispiring.
The story I enjoyed, however, it was pretty staigthforward and lacked the magic and twists of other wizarding world movies. Didn't really feel invested. I still had some great emotional moments and laughs though. So all in all it was a good watch for a lazy Friday evening. I actually liked it more that the previous installment of the series.
If you are looking for the next dose of Harry Potter magic or a solid, but not too heavy movie after a long and tiring week, this is perfect! If you are pissed at WB for firing Depp and not wanna give them money, then you're better of waiting until it comes out on HBO...
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Trevorrow, Connolly and Bayona should stay away from film making
Trevorrow, Connolly and Bayona should stay away from film making for everyone's sake.
One dimensional characters (especially the antagonists), weak, non existent or forced-for-the-plot motives, scenes no one ever wanted to see, technical stupidity, character stupidity, physical stupidity... Nothing makes sense. And the things that do are as simple and calculable as a stick.
Now that I think about it, the producers should never ever be allowed to make a movie ever again either. I mean how can you read the script and not notice how flawed it is in every single scene?!
To Trevorrow especially: you've ruined the Jurrassic Park AND the Star Wars franchise. Please, PLEASE just quit! You are inept. Accept it and find another career. Or just take the money you earned, build a beach house, sip cocktails for the rest of your life, I don't care. Just never create a movie ever again. Please. Really please!
Enola Holmes (2020)
Tad too forced
A tad blunt and forced with the message, and I don't really subscribe to historical inaccuracies, but if I treat this as pure fiction, it was a charming story and a loveable romance. Loved the characters themselves. Edit was too hasty in many scenes with no reason. A sequel would feel appropriate.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Positive surprise
I have to say, I wasn't really looking forward to this and the first act was really weak: dumb characters, making dumb decisions , dumb dialogues. But at one point the whole story turns. Integrating modern life flawlessy, great hero's journey, characters balance out... I'd love to give the first act a 3 or 4 and the secind and third a 9. But since the ending is what usually defines a film, I decided to be generous. Good superhero movie. Watch it.
Stranger Things: Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt (2019)
Flawless
I'm usually very critical and I'm always a man of words. But this is just that. Flawless. Thank you.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Recommended viewing order
1: Watch season 1 to 6 for they are masterpieces.
2 (optional): If you have no other series you are addicted to, watch the additional season 7. It's very cool.
3: Wait for G.R.R. Martin to finish the remaining books to see how the story ends.
4: Forget that season 8 ever happened. Don't ever ask about it. Trust me. Pretend it doesn't exist.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter Twenty: Mephisto Waltz (2019)
Splendid finale
And after the abysmal S02E08 the creator takes back the reins and the season finale becomes an tense, suspenseful epsiode with twists, drama, character development, good acting, connections to episodes before and cliffhangers that are not frustrating but intriguing enough to have you waiting excitedly for the next season. Well done, Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa :)
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter Nineteen: The Mandrake (2019)
Did everyone lose their minds?
The writing of this show gets more and more blatantly silly, simple and boring. It feels like as if some teenage Twilight fanfiction writers took over. The characters do not act rationally, hell they don't act like themselves either, they don't think, Sabrina acts like a spoiled brat and no one seems to question her.
And I'm all for gender equality, but could you just write the show so the evils guys plans are not so simple and obnoxiously stupid? Some finesse please? Morally grey situations maybe? But no, the evil guy has to hate all women for no reason, the other wants to take sexual advangate of a woman in a dire situation. We all get the paralel! It's just so annoying when it's shoved in your face instead of being presented as an integral, subtle part of the story. It just feels that everything is rendered to serve the goal of showcasing gender equality in a very onesided way and I feel the story suffers for it. This could be done.in a clever, tearful, gut wrenching way, but the it is done now is just idiotic. The viewer needs to relate in someway to the antagonists too, but here they are just one dimensional assholes with no ulterior motives or anything that makes them feel real.
And we're back to my main problem: the weak amd one dimensional characters.
Sabrina got so upset when Nick lied to her before. She does the same now without blinking an eye. And afterwards Nick is like 'yeah, okay whatever'. Wait, actually not even that. He doesn't even bat an eye.
Oh and Sabrina. She has always been wilful and wayward but no she doesn't even stop to listem to other opinions. Just one episode ago she was convinced that her new powers was to spread her fathers gospel (which again no one questioned), but it turns out she's the emissary of Satan. Oh again, if just ONE person for all who saw her ressurection in the church would have told her what she said there... But no, that would have been to logical... So after that blunder she's back to square one saying 'I know what's happening everyone else is wrong'. And look what happens in the end... Yeah sure we didn't see that coming...........
Prudence has been switching between antagonist and hero throughout the whole series but now she is just acting blind and soooo stupid that it's just unbelievable. She's supposed to cunning, powerful and a leader, instead she just sucks up to daddy against Sabrina after Sabrina saved her life TWICE.
And no one thinks even for a second that if Sabrina looses her powers then how in Heaven/Hell will she be able to oppose the Dark Lord???
Lilith creates a f##king scarecrow to kill the most powerful witch ever. Had she gone completely mental?? A scarecrow golem with no powers? Who can be defeated without any magic? And after its defeat whoever defeats it just takes her rib which can be used against her? I've seen it coming the moment she created it!
By the way if the mandrake spell siphons the persons power shouldn't Theo and Roz have lost theirs too?!??
I was crying out loud through the whole episode...
