A Nail Biter!
21 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I never thought I could ever rate a 50's big bug flick a 10, but this one earned it. This thing was riveting from start to heart-pounding climax. Everything was right with this one especially the 100% interesting script and the tight direction from Gordon Douglas. The final scene in the storm drains under L.A. had me actually biting my nails yelling at the television as James Whitmore is trying to save the 2 small boys surrounded by hordes of giant mutated ants. Another scene with the newly hatched ants all over the naval ship at sea, was superb. There is not one scene in this that was filler. It plays like a police who-dun-it crossed with a sci-fi film mixed with horror overtones. Even the minor actors from cops to moms to kids were all acted very well.

The original poster for this had a warning "not for children", I can see why, it would be to intense. This was made for older teens and adults and maybe this is why it is so much better than the other giant "thing" movies from that era. A gem from the 1950's that today is still worth watching.

A Chilling Descent into Dark Sexuality and Madness
8 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This highly disturbing look at sexuality was way, way, way ahead of it's time in 1952 when Carson McCullers wrote the novel, let alone in 1967 when John Huston was bold enough to bring this to the screen. It concerns a group of people on a Southern army base in the 50's on the verge of sexual discovery and insanity. Marlon Brando plays a repressed homosexual married to the slatternly over sexed dimwit daughter(Elizabeth Taylor)of the army post General. She teases him with taunts over his "lack of interest in her" while she is having an affair with another officer Brian Keith. Brian is married to Julie Harris who has cut of her nipples with garden shears after a miscarriage (symbolically ending her female identification and interest in sex)and now lives in her bedroom, entertained by her effeminate Filipino houseboy as they watercolor, dream of escaping reality and listening to classical music. Meanwhile Brando becomes crazily obsessed with a handsome enlisted (and psychotic) man (Robert Foster) who rides naked on a horse in the woods and eventually begins to tease Brando with sexual nuances. But Foster also is sneaking into Taylor's room at night and doing something (I can not say it here, but it is solo and involves her panties) by her bed while she is in her usual drunken/pills induced stupors. Eventually all this Fruedian psychosis ends in the final explosive scene, a murder. I liked this film because it delves into dark subjects we rarely see on film, the actors are amazing (especially Brando), the photography is top notch and the extremely well written script drips in Southern Gothic guilt, symbolism and remorse (but no redemption). Two scenes that sent chills up my spine was Brando standing in the pouring rain caressing the secretly picked up candy wrapper Foster dropped, as he stares aggressively at Foster entering the barracks to take a shower and the final scene as the camera madly jumps around the room accompanied by one character's horrified screams and another literally gone insane. One of the most fascinating psychological films I have ever seen. NOTE: This film along with another Taylor vehicle "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?" I've been told by a film scholar, were the catalysts for the rating system that emerged in 1968.

Extraordinary Film
23 May 2004
The most intense and powerful film I have seen in years. There have been other films before that delved into the Vietnam Vet but nothing compared to this emotionally heartwrenching film, as a typical American suburban family, circa 1972, comes apart at the seams, revealing the scars that Vietnam has left on our all of our collective souls. The cast is A++++ fantastic with all four actors(with Kathy Bates a stand-out) giving riveting performances. What is wonderful about this film is that you take no sides, but understand all four characters and empathize with them, even though all four have divergent viewpoints and needs. There are scenes in here that are so powerful as family secrets and feelings are revealed(such as the confrontation between son and mother) that will have you emotionally drained and in tears of anguish. I actually cried in this film, something I rarely do. The shocking end is a stunner! A much overlooked film that should be seen. I rate this 1996 film a 10/10 a superlative piece. Highly recommended especially in this day and age with again, our country embroiled in a hideous war, our headlines shouting of atrocities and again, our young men and women returning with deep psychological scars, with their deep pain of deeds done in the line of honor. A must see film.

Moody, Disturbing, But....Slow
18 April 2004
Warning: Spoilers
POSSIBLE SPOILER ****** Being a very low budget piece, I was really impressed by many aspects of this film such as top notch cinematography (very impressive Euro style), capable cast, good use of backgrounds and a well chosen classical musical score, all aspects usually missing from low budget indies. The problem with the film is it's pacing which is deadly slow, and it's lack of any suspense or emotion. Even with this criticism, the film is still a haunting work even after it's over. I still find myself thinking back on it's disturbing plot. POSSIBLE SPOILER. If anybody else has seen this can you explain the ending in the chapel? Not really sure what it meant, was the victim at the alter, the true villain of the piece (which would explain an earlier scene with the brutal murder in the kitchen) or was the the ending to show the futility of life on the part of the last surviving character. All in all gave it a 7/10. This director has promise, hope he continues his career in his art.

The Calling (I) (2000)

Effectively Creepy
12 January 2004
Warning: Spoilers
**** Possible Spoiler****After reading the comments on here I thought I was in for a stinker, but I found this film very well made. It kept my interest throughout, was filmed wonderfully, using the Isle of Man locale effectively (at times the sky and landscape looked like out of a fantasy) and overall the plot held up. Yes I agree the mother was naive, but are not most mothers just that, when it comes to their spouse and children, not wanting to believe the worst. Film concerns the birth of the Anti-Christ and those who must protect and nurture his evil body and soul until he is ready to take over the world. This film was truly chilling from the sacrificial murder of the first born child, the other murders that follow, the hedonistic masked birthday party for the Devil's spawn, the Satanic crucifiction, up to the emotional matricide and the astounding prophetic climax. Not as good as "The Omen", of course, but I have to say just a notch below it. No other film made after "The Omen" captured this genre as well as this film. Also this was not a direct to video as another commented, it was released in theaters. 8/10

Hysterically Bad
23 August 2003
This film is very very bad. I saw this in a theater on opening weekend with about 10 other people. (That tell you something). Set in 1800's, the storyline is plain wacky the funniest thing is the Russian Ambassodor speaking with a down home Georgia drawl. I guess the casting people thought maybe this character was born in the Georgia region in Russia and they would speak that way. Anyway the acting is amazingly bad not helped by the lines they had to deliver. Count how many times they mention "poxed whores". By the end of the film, after a disaster that takes place, I mentioned to my companion watch the smoke will clear and it will reveal modern Hong Kong. Yep that is what happens modern Hong Kong, Or was it Singapore? Atlanta? What have you. As a good/bad movie to laugh at (like The Oscar, Valley Of The Dolls, Showgirls, The Heretic, etc.)it manages some laughs but unlike the others mentioned above, it is not uniformly hysterical as these are. There are a lot of long dull stretches especially in first half of film. 2/10 only for the Russian's accent. Recommend to avoid otherwise. Go read the book.

Top Notch Mystery Thriller
23 August 2003
Stylish photography, very well acted and very well written and directed thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. Katherine Ross and James Caan as the bored kinky NY couple are outstanding in one of their early roles. Made in 1967 this film was way ahead of it's time with it's themes. If you like offbeat mysteries "Games" is a game you will want to play! Hard to find on tape, not on DVD and rarely on TV. Too bad because this film is like one of those lost cinematic gems. Hopefully a DVD distributer will release in a (hopefully)widescreen. Recommend this one highly.

Who-Dun-It?
19 August 2003
I really liked this movie a lot. Very well written murder mystery with clues that are fair and sort of a scary movie to boot! It really keeps you guessing right to the last scene who is the disturbed murderer. Set on an island off Canada at a world chess tournament, where the killer is murdering his or her (I won't spill the beans!) victims by chess moves taken by the players. Every one and I mean everyone, is a suspect as the cast gets whittled down by the killer leading to a heart pounding climax. Nice photography with a creepy opening scene. If you like to play Sherlock Holmes or just like an edge of your seat mystery thriller you will enjoy this movie a lot. I guarentee you will keep changing your guess to who the killer is many times while watching this.....but use your little gray cells and follow the clues! Neat flick!

What Were They Thinking????
15 August 2003
I got suckered into seeing this last night against my better judgement. Boy what a bad movie. The premise was interesting set in 1899, the League is made up of literary figures such as Dorian Gray, Mina Harker (Dracula), Dr. Jeckyll, Allan Quatermain, Capt. Nemo, and The Invisible Man who are recruited to stop another mad literary figure from taking over the world. Ok belief is suspended BUT this film is too wacky. For example: Driving a car (in 1899 London) no one on street thinks it is strange. This is just one of many unbelievable things in film. By midway through I was waiting for a television or an airliner to pop up. But the worst thing is the script. Terrible. Worst dialogue I have heard in a film since "Showgirls" or "The Avengers". I'm serious it is that bad. Also after first 20 min film is EXTREMELY boring and even gets sillier until final half hour. Lame quips and bad jokes do not a movie make. Last half hour was better though. I knew this is was undoubtedly a problem film beforehand since 20th Century Fox really did not promote it very much like other hopeful summer blockbusters. I guess the dismal box office proved that. I give it 3/10 only because I felt sorry for Sean Connery, who I like a lot, he produced this mess besides starring in it. Anyone else 1/10.

Dolls Dolls Give My Dolls!
15 August 2003
I could go on and on trashing this 1960's potboiler but it has been done before by many. Let me just say that this film is a.) so bad that it becomes 100% camp. b.) glossy and superficial like a TV soap opera. c.) technically well made and visually appealing in a pop 60's way d.) NEVER boring! It isn't dull anywhere! Just rent this kitsh sit back and wallow in hysterical laughter. There are so many lines that will have you rolling on the floor. Patty Duke overacts horribly so by the end of the picture she is in an alley rolling herself around garbage cans! Susan Hayward chews the scenery shamelessly, Sharon Tate just poses and Barbra Parkins at least gives a credible performance. Add to this "the addictive dolls", mental institutions, French New Wave and Jacqueline Susann herself (the author of the novel) as a nosy reporter at one character's suicide scene and you have a classic trash camp film possibly of all time. I give it 7/10 because film is a time capsule of 1960's bad taste cinema presented in an entertaining high end look.

"When You Lie Down With Dogs.....
15 August 2003
....you come up smelling like fleas". One of the lines actually spoken (by Tony Bennett)in "The Oscar". Words can not describe this film. It is so so bad...it is GREAT! Stephen Boyd's performance is way way way over the top like nothing you have ever seen before. He is like a rabid dog hopped up on speed. The other performers are terrible too! Especially Tony Bennett who looks like he is reading his lines off cue cards. But it is the script that will have you on the floor laughing. There are so many memorably bad lines in this that I recommend you have a whole pad of paper and a pen ready to jot them all down. Rush don't walk to your nearest video store and rent this! One of the best (if not THE best) of the camp crazed melodramas of the 1960's. 10/10 as ultra grade A+ high camp. Regular still high 6/10 for its sheer audacity and 60's chic look at the bowels of Hollywood. Norma Desmond Mr. Boyd is ready for his close up.

Spellbinding
13 August 2003
I saw this film one night on my local PBS station not knowing what it was about. When the film opens on a crowded disco soundtracked Fire Island (1980) and I realized it was a gay themed film I was about to turn it off being a hetero male, I figured nothing here to relate too. WRONG. I stuck with the film and probably have to rate this as one of my top 10 movies ever. WOW did this film floor me! It follows a group of gay friends and lovers (and a hetero gal pal)through the AIDS plagued 80's decade. This film is truly written with insight and compassion. I found all the characters interesting and realistic with the actors portraying them excellently as well (especially Campbell Scott and Bruce Davidson). The scene with Davidson bringing his lover to his death is heartfelt and emotional but the scene at the end with the 3 survivors walking now on a silent deserted Fire Island beach as all their friends(and others) who died from AIDS milling about as they remembered them brought a lot of tears to my eyes. It is how all of us as humans try to remember those we love who have passed. I recommend this movie to all people both gay and straight because it is a film that transcends these labels and speaks to us as just humans, all in this mystery called life, as one.

Dracula at his Finest
13 August 2003
Best of the Hammer Dracula's. Film totally held my interest and the whole religious redemption theme with the gigantic crucifix at the end was quite chilling. Opening scene with dead girl's body, falling out of the church bell is creepy and foretells what is to come. The count gets reawakened by the blood of a priest who then becomes his mind slave, no one will visit the desecrated Catholic church where the blood stained bell is, the hero is an atheist and Dracula wants the local monsignior's niece as his bride of blood. As you can see lots of religious symbolism in this one. But also lots of erotic imagery too.

My favorite, virginal niece Veronica Carlson, her heaving bodice open for Dracula, flinging her doll off the bed during the encounter with the vampire a sign that she now has been defiled by this evil. Classy production and good use of color in this one. It is amazing how Hammer Studios could make these horror films look like a class A production but on a typical B budget. Check this one out if you like vampire films and the "Hammer" style.

Good Advice (2001)
8/10
Really Very Enjoyable
11 August 2003
It takes a lot for me to enjoy a romantic comedy I usually don't. But "Good Advice" is one of the few that I would recommend. It is funny! The whole movie too. This is so well written and directed that there is not a dull moment anywhere in it. The actors are ALL perfectly cast with Charlie Sheen, Denise Richards and Barry Newman especially so. What is really good about this film is that the writers concentrated on the humorous storyline about the lovelorn column deception and not pad it out with unneeded romantic scenes between the two main characters. The film reminds me of those type of "frothy" comedies they made in the 1960's (without the heavy sexual humor that this film has of course) and because of it's unique blend of comedy, light romance and pathos the makers ended up with a witty highly entertaining movie.

Amazingly Good Film
6 August 2003
I had no preconceived notion of this film, but it was on a 4 movie DVD set I bought for another movie in the set. Popped it on, and was I surprised. This movie is VERY good. Nicely photographed in color, NEVER boring, well written with a doozy of a disaster at the end that is quite impressive using 1949 special effects. Film concerns the boom town of Tulsa in 1920's and the greed of people and overproduction of oil wells, infringing on the farmers land and poisoning the waterways killing the cattle herds. Nicest bit of the film was the conservation angle about too much oil in boom times ruins the land for the future when they dry up. Good movie.

Oh Oh War Dance Time
4 August 2003
Let me just say that I did not expect much from this film when I popped it into the DVD player. It is on a 4 movie set from Platinum Great Westerns Vol 8. that I paid only $4.00. Well, they must of remastered this one, quality is excellent. Almost looks like a 3D color movie at times. The flick itself...pretty good not a western at all though. Set out east in 1790 with the blue coats and settlers invading upon the Indian's habitat. Commissioned Boston artist Scott Brady frolicking with 3 beautiful women, fiancee Lori Nelson, bar maid Alison Hayes, and Indian princess Rita Gamm. Sinister demented land owner John Hoyt plays the white skins against the red skins so both wipe each other out and the valley will be all his. Crazed Mohawk Neville Brand doing frenzied war dances, only makes matters worse. Ends with exciting attack on the fort, bad guy gets his in spades, and Brady picking the right gal for marriage. The movie is no deep drama by any means, but it moves very quickly, nice to look at in a 1950's avante garde way, some (not all) of the outdoor sets are really on a studio sound stage so there are paintings as backdrops that are VERY obvious. Fun movie though to enjoy for what it is.

Priest (1994)
10/10
Powerful and Intense
2 August 2003
The ending of this film at the communion rail, is the MOST powerful scene I have ever seen in any movie for a long long time. It will have you sobbing like a baby, guaranteed. Film is an emotion charged look at the Catholic Church's problems and cover-ups concerning a closeted guilt ridden gay priest's sexual desires, and a little girl being molested by her disgusting father who relates in the confessional not for penance, but to tell the priest it is his right and not to interfere. Priest has guilt over his sexuality and about the confession, but he can not tell about the girl because of church rules. Meanwhile it's found out about his being gay with parish congregation and church hierarchy is in an uproar. Linus Roache plays gay priest. His performance is outstanding. Very thought provoking movie. makes you think for weeks afterward about guilt and redemption. I gave it 10/10. This movie blew me away with it's intense plotting, powerful themes and the courage to film it with such insight. Recommend this film very highly but have a box of tissue for final 5 minutes. I warned you.

Interesting To Say The Least
2 August 2003
Today (even in 1943) this film is very racist dealing with Japanese son educated in US goes back to Japan and takes part in atrocities there and in China. The whole China sequences are very grisly and actually disturbing, such as nailing the baby to the door by his/her pigtail along with the usual raping and pillaging of the Chinese countryside. They even keep the Chinese drugged up with free heroin handouts from trucks that pull into the villages. There is just one "good" Japanese character in the movie, the female secretary who works for an American architect caught in Japan with some Western reporters when WW2 finally erupts. But then these characters get tortured and sentenced to death. On the whole film it is NEVER boring...never. It has very good production and fine actors (even though Japanese are all played by white Europeans a la Charlie Chan). Now get this! RKO was asked by US government to make a picture that would portray Japanese in a real and fair way instead of the crop of anti-Japanese pictures that were made already so to stave off racial hatred toward this group. It was rampant in US (not so, for Germans though, interestingly films about Nazi's always had numerous "good" Germans, never in propaganda Japanese films who were usually portrayed as sub human hordes.)Anyway this was Hollywood's answer to the problem. Unbelievable! Film though is considered an excellent yet hysterical example of WW2 propaganda at the time.

One of the ALL TIME Worst Films ever Made
30 July 2003
This is the pits and a torture to sit through. What were they thinking when they made this travesty derived from a popular 60's TV show. Not even semi-passable enough to laugh at like a Plan 9 From Outer Space or Beyond The Valley Of the Dolls. Just down right rotten. It makes no sense whatsover, the actors all look vaguely humiliated and obviously bored in the film and visually it isn't even stimulating. Avoid this one like the bubonic plague! 1/10 because I could not vote zero.

Radioland Craziness
30 July 2003
Not as bad as some think. Critics hated it and I can see why. The comedy is not funny it is like a Three Stooges or Abbot and Costello movie with very bad and very tired slapstick. BUT this film is a joy to look at though. The art deco sets are great (actually best I ever seen in a out of era film), great costumes, color photography is done well, as are the radio acts and 1930's songs and commercials. Too bad the writer did not make a straight mystery drama instead of a mystery "slip on a banana peel" movie. Actors are fine especially Michael McKean as the fey, obviously gay bandleader and Corben Benson as the debonair radio announcer. Brian Benben is another story though, very annoying and grates badly. Anyway blame the failure on the writer(s) of this and casting Benben. Original story was by George Lucas. I wonder if his story was a bad comedy though? I have a fondness for this film that transcends the bad points. Amazingly I saw this in 1994 on opening night at a large mutiplex in Chicago. I was the ONLY person in the theater. Opening night at 7:00PM! Never had that happen before or since. If you like the 1930-1940 era you will probably enjoy this film albeit I doubt the furious slapstick. Film is dedicated to the wonderful Anita Morris who played the sultry torch singer, who died during filming.

It's All A Lie! Argento Had Nothing to Do With This!
29 July 2003
But unfortunately he did. I am a Dario Argento lover since I saw his first film Bird With The Crystal Plumage as a teen in 1969. Since then I have loved all his 70's and 80's films even his semi-misfires like Cat O'Nine Tails or Sleepless are still in my book fairly good Argentos. Reason being is that even these two have the film, style and mood that is his signature. Then I saw Fabio in Opreyland. WORST Phantom filmed ever! And I am not a particular fan of any version but at least I can say all the others were Ok. There are very few positives to this film except the costumes and some of the sets. Negatives: A. Why have such a sappy VERY boring, romantic script with a handsome Fabio look alike phantom? Probably to lure the teenage girls which is about the level of interest this film is on. B. Many unneeded and annoying characters in the flick especially the rat catchers driving around the sewers under the opera house in...get this...a turbo powered rat mobile in the late 19th century! C. Mundane photography not one shot is innovative or even re-hashed Argento..none. D. No mood, no suspense, no horror, no nothing! E. The script rarely makes sense and just sort of meanders on and on and on. The A-Pix DVD I picked up (thankfully it was a 5.99 markdown)has the

original movie art on cover that depicts a cracked white masked phantom with a crazed eyeball dripping blood. No where even remotely in this pathetic film. Not even a mask of any sort. Also be warned it said had full screen and widescreen on disk but both sides were full screen only. I though Trauma was his worst and only bad film really, but this is far worse than that one. I give it 2.0/10.O and I am being generous!

Give this one a shot.
29 July 2003
Okay, most critics even Argento lovers give this film poor reviews. I admit this is not his best work, but it's not a bad mystery Giallo film and I enjoyed it a lot. From the intricate plotting, to the impressive Argento style camera-work, and those trendy (circa 1971) sets this film is a winner. I saw this at the theater when it was released, as a teenager coming off seeing Bird W/ The Crystal Plumage 2 years before so I expected at least another stylish horror film. I got it black patent leather gloves and all. Argento himself said this is his most disappointing film. I disagree it delivered the goods in a well made, suspenseful, well plotted, never boring and good looking package. His worst film by far is the atrocious Phantom of The Opera (1998). Avoid that one. Although Cat O' Nine tails is no Suspiria or Deep Red, it still is a worthy addition to any Argento or Giallo horror film collection. I give it 8/10.

High Fashion Giallo
28 July 2003
Stunning cinematography and scrumptous sets place this squarely in the high end of Giallo (along with some of Argento's 70's-80's works). This is by far the best of Bava's work from a technical standpoint alone. Great to look at although the plot is a little creaky (but still a fun mystery) and the actors badly dubbed. High fashion models are being murdered by the typical black gloved maniac all involving a hidden diary with some incriminating secrets related to the fashion house (drug addiction, abortion, etc.) Recommend this highly to those who love their Giallo with visuals that impress. Bava uses color well in this and also I feel, set the stage for Dario Argento and the rest to follow in his footsteps.

Final in The Animal Trilogy and a Good Scary One Too
21 July 2003
I saw this on the big screen when it first was released in 1973 as a teen and later in 1992 at The Film Institute where it was shown with an unedited Susperia and Dario Argento himself was there to introduce both films and to discuss with the audience his craft after their showings. There must be something with this film since it was chosen for this unique seminar over all his other pre 1992 works. Upon the second viewing of this film, I still find it scary and spellbinding and the secret behind the title is quite chilling. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it. The stylish camerawork and storyline is pure Argento "black glove" period and this is my 3rd favorite film (tied with Deep Red) of his right behind #1 Susperia and #2 Tennebre. Why this film was never released on DVD or at least, after all these years, on VHS is a mystery in itself. I for one will be the first in line to purchase this if Anchor Bay or another reputable DVD distributor releases it.

Best Who Dun It I Ever Saw
13 July 2003
I can not speak more highly of this movie as it has to be the best film who-dun-it ever conceived. James Coburn invites a group of Hollywood has been types on his yacht in the south of France to find out who killed his gossip columnist wife Sheila, a year before at a wild party. He sets up murder puzzle games, one every night, to find the culprit and to entertain the guests, but the games get out of control and real murders begin. The clues in this movie are really unique as you the viewer play along to find out the murderer. I have seen this film 3X and am still in awe that I missed so many clues....right before my eyes. Never guessed the killer either and I am a mystery buff and usually can. The cast is great. There are so many funny and bitchy lines in this movie they come from every direction. My favorite line: James Mason (a TV commercial director filming a dog food commercial) talking to his wife on phone "I am sorry dear but I must hang up a cast member is peeing on my leg." And he doesn't mean one of the pooches! Beautifully filmed and an all around A++++ film.
