Idi i smotri (1985)
Astonishing and powerful
Come and See is an astonishing film that shows how a young boy ages in front of the camera. This young boy instead of being able to enjoy his youth, he grows up going through what an adult soldier goes through as if it was a grown man trapped in a kids body. It is a film where the plot is almost unpredictable. When I first saw it, I thought Flyora was going to get caught and be drag to a horrible place. In almost every scene I thought that he was going to either get killed or tortured. To my surprise, Flyora was never caught. Somehow out of experienced grown ups, this young boy survives to witness everything that surrounds him. This is a great film but at the same time it is a film that is painful to watch. It shows pretty harsh, yet true, scenes that makes you feel this nauseous feeling. Overall I consider this film as an eye opening to people that might have a different concept of what it is to fight in a real harsh war.
Dom za vesanje (1988)
Beautiful story
In this Gypsy film, Kusturica allows us to follow the life of a young boy, Perhan. He is in a way grandma's sweet angel. In the beginning of the film, Perhan's personality is of a shy, innocent, and obedient young boy. Unfortunately he bumps with Ahmed, a man who only cares about money and will do whatever it takes even if it means to buy innocent human being and force them to get them his money. Perhan is influence by Ahmed. His personality starts to change. He becomes ambitious and in a way cold hearten. He does not believe that his wife to be, Azra, is pregnant by him. Instead he thinks that she was whoring around with his uncle, which he hates. Everything Perhan does, in a way goes wrong. Even his grandmother is disappointed in him and tells him that he is not the same. That he has become into a different person. Throughout the film, Perhan seems to be having an inner conflict. He know that he has changed yet it seems to be hard to go back to that innocent personality that he once mastered. This film is a wonderful film that shows how a young person lives in a world where he has to make his own decision. He has to in a way choose between right or wrong. It is a wonderful film! A MUST see film.
Yuki yukite, shingun (1987)
Whatever it takes to reveal the truth
This film shows how a Japanese veteran (World War), Okuzaki does whatever it takes to get the truth on the death of two of his fellow soldiers. This is a film where the protagonist does not really care of what he has to do or where he will end up. All he seems to be aiming at is to revealing an important truth that seems to be hunting him. This film left a great impact on me because it pictured what soldiers must go through during a war. They suffer hunger and pain. But worst of all, they are obligated to commit and do certain things that they do not want to. For example, in this film, we see that soldiers were forced to choose between their life or the life of others. I had never been in such position but the though of it is horrible. Being in their position must be worse. I think that this film is a great film. Despite the violence that Okuzaki uses, I think that he is a true and loyal soldier.
El espíritu de la colmena (1973)
In search for truth
A five year old girl searching for truth. It might have started as a curiosity but without realizing it she really had to find out what the mystery was all about.
Ana, an innocent five year old girl sees and hears about Frankenstein for the first time. Through a film, she learns about who he is and what he does. When Ana finds out that Frankenstein killed a young girl, Ana becomes extremely concern about who this Frankenstein really is and if he exists. According to Ana's oldest sister, Isabel, Frankenstein is real and shows himself to those who believe in him. When Ana runs away from her father, it gave me the impression that she was going to meet Frankenstein and run away with him. In the film, we see that she actually does meet him but is shocked by who knows what happened. At the end of the film, it seems that Ana liked Frankenstein because even when she met him already seen she hopes to see him again.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
A true love story
Two persons. Both marry yet alone at the same time. Their partners mingle with each other. Both Maggie and Tony know yet they decide not to make a BIG deal out of it. Instead they "are not going to be like them." I guess that they were not aware that love can happen any day and any time. Even when they both try not to fall for each other they get attach to one another without realizing it. I think that this is a true love story. At the end, they do not really say good-bye to each other. Perhaps because they will always have each other in their mind. They conserve the love that they both feel towards each other.
Not only is this a great film but it also contains such great music. The music in this film is a very important element for this film because it is what sets the mood and allows the audience to feel what the actors are feeling.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
Funny but true
In the beginning of this film, I was not sure of what was going on. All i could do was laugh. As the film continued to the part where people sat on the table while using toilets as chair, I got the idea that it is showing how ridiculous our society is. We create rules that at time we do not follow them or we make up certain rules that when we violate them it seems like a big deal when it really isn't. For example, who said that when we ride an elevator we are supposed to face one specific way? Is facing the back part of the elevator a crime? If not, then why do people look at you as if you are some sort of weird person when you face the back or side part of the elevator? I think that this film is a great film because it helps us reflect on how we humans behave.
La otra conquista (1998)
A must see film
La Otra Conquista is a breathtaking film that shows a conflict between two cultures. We see how the protagonist, Topiltzin, fights to keep his belief alive while experiencing inner and outer conflicts. In the film, Topiltzin is captured and is forced to believe in a complete different culture. Even when Topiltzin is tortured he never gives up on his belief. On the contrary he is fully aware that it is up to him to keep their blood running. That is why he mingles with with Dona Isabel, who saves him from being killed. Dona Isabel becomes pregnant and confesses to Cortes that the baby that she is carrying is her blood. Meaning that the baby is full Aztec. This film is a wonderful film. It shows a really important part of history that many might have a different concept of. It is a must see film that will have a great impact on people from diverse cultures. Before watching this film prepare yourself to go back in time and feel the pain that people went through just because they had their own belief.
