Starbuck (2011)
One of the best to come out of Canada
When deciding to give this movie a go, I was skeptical since I've been pretty disappointed with most films coming out of Canada, however, after watching Starbuck, it renewed my faith in Canadian Cinema. The movie is about a middle-aged man who hasn't had much luck in his life. In his 20's, he lived above a sperm clinic and was a frequent donor which comes back to haunt him 20 years later. The story revolves around the children fathered by the anonymous donor named "Starbuck" and their wish to find who the anonymous donor is. Starbuck is my favourite comedy of the year and probably one of my favourite films. The premise of the movie is very unique and heart warming and the actors are wonderfully casted. Starbuck hasn't received much press, however, word is going around and a remake is being rumored. Watch it now before someone else ruins it.
Bella (2006)
The movie is a disaster
I'm a lover of most films and usually I'm not picky or critical, however, this movie was such a waste of time. The movie is about a former star soccer player who ends up being a chef who works at his brothers restaurant. We're not sure why things didn't work out as a soccer player, however, we get this impression, through his wilderness appearance and his annoying sombre persona, that it must have ended tragically, which it did. The story evolves into a relationship between the brother and a fired waitress from the restaurant. For some reason, he decides to leave the restaurant during dinner time and go to the beach with the waitress, who recently found out she was pregnant. They then take the train, go to his parents home, and wonder about aimlessly. All of a sudden, the movie fast forwards a few years and we're at the dramatic ending, which we're not sure how we got too. This rating is an insult to the great IMDb which is usually dead on with it's ratings, not here.
The Visitor (2007)
A great surprise
I saw this movie collecting dust in my library, and read the back and decided to give it a try. Boy, was I surprised. The movie is so touching and original and the characters are so unique. Jenkins is perfect in this movie and his thirst for life is inspiring. The movie begins with a bored professor who tries to play the piano, but just can't seem to come anywhere near the talent his deceased wife had. One day,to his dismay, he's asked by the dean to go to New York to read a paper he co-authored (although he really didn't and has little to do with it). He is forced to go and decides to stay in his New York apartment which he hasn't visited in a long while. When he arrives, he's stunned to find out that a couple has been living there. The couple leaves, however, feeling sorry for the young struggling couple, Jenkins decides to allow them to stay for a while which begins a wonderful friendship, a discovery of an instrument and genre of music, and a surprising new love. A great little movie that came out of nowhere. Give it a try
Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
1st time - Stupid, 2nd - not bad, 3rd - Ya Baby!!!!
After watching this movie on the dish, I was kind of disappointed. A lot of the same material, a little boring, and the Goldmember Character was really stupid.....until, I had to watch it again because one of my friends was over. I got hooked. The Goldmember character grew and grew on me like bad B.O. I started to mimic him. I could make my wife laugh (who also experienced the same feeling) and laugh just by imitating him. Goldmember's first line says it all. I'm Goldmember...and I'm from Holland....Isn't that weird!! I guess it takes a while to sink in.
