Nina's Heavenly Delights (2006)
Lesbian / gay interest?
My wife liked it, the two lesbians sitting behind us loved it, but I wouldn't say it was the best film I have ever seen.
PLOT I thought this was pretty simplistic. It is my own taste of course, but I didn't find myself being drawn into the films plot. I thought the storyline was good enough - girl returns home to make good, but it could have been expanded upon to add some lighter moments and perhaps a few twists here and there, but there were none. I found this pretty surprising as the film East is East had them but this did not.
ACTING Not bad. I cannot remember what the actors names were, but they were OK, not outstanding.
CINEMATOGRAPHY Pretty good overall. Use of lighting was good. In particular of note was when the two lesbian lovers first discovered themselves.
I thought long and hard about this submission. I don't like giving bad reviews, but then I don't like being sold something that does not work, and for me I was sold something that did not work.
Gangs of New York (2002)
Daniel 1, Leo 0.
It struck me that this film was mainly aimed at the US audience so that they could have a claim to their roots (ie. people arriving in New York). In that aspect it was a bit disappointing, although entertaining none the less. If that was the case I was surprised to see so many British actors in the film.
As far as the acting is concerned I don't think that Leonardo or Cameron Diaz are nothing more than good looking people. They are not actors in my opinion as when you look at them you do not see the characters they are trying to portray, you see Leonardo and Cameron in a different dress / suit putting on a different accent. Additionally I think that Leonardo was not 'rough' enough for this particular character.
Jim Broadbent, Daniel Day Lewis et. al. were fantastic and portrayed characters well to such an extent that you forgot who the actor was and thought only of the character. A sign of good acting in my opinion.
