Pearl (2022)
Good movie, strange prequel
I think it's unfortunate that this movie is a prequel to 'X'. By itself, this is a really good story, but it's a prequel to a horror movie, and while I guess you could loosely define this as a horror movie, the genres of drama and thriller are much more appropriate. So I would say this movie is definitely worth a watch, but do go into it like I did thinking that it is horror in the sense that the first one was.
The acting in this is great with the lead doing an outstanding job, as well as the other cast.
They are a couple of gory scenes, but they are quick, so someone that likes horror without so, so much gore should like this one!
X (2022)
Nothing new here
This movie is just ok. Some people call it a slasher, but it's not a really a slasher. A group of people go to a cabin in the woods and terror ensues. The only thing new here is why they go to the cabin (to make an adult film). Other than that, this is a garden variety, dime a dozen horror 'kill'em all' movie. I'd have loved for them to have done this without nudity - it's thrown in for the same reason it is in a lot of horror movies, so way to sell out there. I think i would have been cool to not show any since it was about making an adult film. I also saw several reviews where this was referred to as a 'classic' horror movie - it's classic because it takes place in 1979 - other than that, again, this is really your garden variety type of horror movie.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023)
The franchise is fine with just 2 films
I wasn't sure why this needed to be a prequel rather than a sequel. The plot is basically the same as the others - you bury something in that sour ground, and it comes back evil - there's nothing new there. This is just another movie that really didn't need to be made. It would have been nice if there was some kind of twist to the original plot, but honestly, it's just more of the same.
Unfortunately, there's really not much else to say about this movie. It's been over 30 years since part 2 came out, and they just didn't need this one. I guess eventually all of the movie franchises that were good will be tainted by yet another installment because Hollywood seems to have run out of original ideas. :(
Bad Apples (2018)
Bad Apples is....bad
This movie is just not good. The overall premise is - there are these psychopathic girls killing people that won't open their door on Halloween - but the execution here falls flat. For some reason, most of the movie is shot with the lights off in every house they're in. The main character is stabbed in the back at one point, but it doesn't affect her at all until they wanted to shoot a scene where she gets blood on the wall - then she can barely walk. The last 12 minutes or so seem to be something they shot extra because the movie wasn't long enough. The one thing they did well was put the creepy masks in the poster - otherwise I'd have never watched this one.
Blood Widow (2014)
Not much of a story
I know movies seem to have to be 80+ minutes to be features that are shown as such, but this would have been a much better film if it was about 45 minutes long. The first 45 minutes is mostly filler material. The last 45 minutes isn't bad, except that the story goes nowhere. I guess I'll need to mark this as containing spoilers, but at the end, everyone is just dead and the killer goes on. There's no twist, nothing. If there was a sequel, I guess it would just be more senseless killing. Technically, there are some really bad audio spots that they should have re-recorded. I swear I never saw an arrow in the crossbow the guy was using. And the idea that whatever blade the killer was wielding could cut through an axe handle is just bizarre. If you're reading this trying to decide between 2 movies, pick the other one :(
The Jerk (1979)
It's just silly slapstick
I like Steve Martin. I don't like slapstick. I had never seen this movie, so I figured I'd watch it because it's a classic. I still like Steve Martin and I still don't like slapstick. The movie is just so silly, and I know it's intended to be, but I still can't bring myself to rate this higher than a 4. If you like this kind of slapstick humor, I think you'll like this one, but it really wasn't something I'd care to watch again. There are a few one liners that every one will enjoy I think, but to someone that's not really into slapstick, this really seemed like a Saturday Night Live skit that went on far too long.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Another cookie cutter Jason Statham movie
Let me start by saying I like the overall plot of this guy avenging call centers taking advantage of people, but that's really kind of where it all ends. The call centers are presented like televangelist types of places which is over the top itself. It's also extremely PC. The call centers are in the US, which normally isn't the case, but I guess they didn't want to offend the places these calls normally come from? All the bad guys are males, except for the one off-her-rocker new bee keeper, and the president is a female. So after checking all of the PC boxes, this is basically just another hour of the normal unrealistic 'guy can defeat any number of assailants and sneak into anywhere unnoticed' type of movie. If you;'re into that type of thing, you'll like this one. If you're not into that type of thing, you probably won't.
Rabid (2019)
Not a bad movie
I read some reviews before leaving this one. I'm not really sure what people want out of a remake. While I really don't think this movie needed to be remade, the updates with makeup and creature effects, I thought, were pretty good. While some people think the original is a masterpiece, I found it quite forgetful. The one thing I don't really like about this movie is that it's sort of a slow build up, then all of a sudden everyone's infected and they're all running around. I'd have liked to see this just follow her - I think the plot is better without all of the commoners becoming infected as well.
Knuckleball (2018)
Definitely worth watching!
I'll start by saying that this was a pretty good story, and I enjoyed it. And really, that's all you need to know - watch it! It's a little more drama than horror, but has enough horror to fall under the horror category, so people that aren't into a lot of gore/slasher type things will enjoy this one too!
There are some elements of Home Alone - I thought that's what this was going to evolve into at one point, but that's only about 10-15 minutes of the movie. There are also some parts that will remind you of the shining - kid, snow, breaking in a door, weird/crazy guy - but that's just an observation, it's not overdone.
There are a couple of things that I'd call continuity errors, but they don't really take away from the film:
1. It turns from day to night in the time it take a guy to go through a small patch of woods. They really just needed to show it getting dark and then being dark.
2. It apparently takes the closest police about 8 hours to reach where ever they are. The first cop starts during the day and gets there at night. She immediately calls for backup which arrives the next morning.
3. Fires go out too quick and cuts don't bleed - you'll understand this if you watch it!
Overall a very good film!
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Ahead of it's time but too long and uneventful
Two and a half hours. Should have been no more than 1:40. The last 30 minutes have no dialog and is mostly him arriving at Jupiter. The story just seems unfinished to me. It definitely has one, but they don't really connect the dots with the opening, and the ending is, well, I guess whatever you want it to be, because it definitely doesn't make a lot of sense, and you have to sort of make up on your own what's going on.
Don't get me wrong....the middle of the movie is at least an 8, but the rest of it is a 3, so I gave it a 5. Also, you will definitely ask yourself several times, "they really this in the 60s??".
Ogre (2008)
Good story - which is really rare!
For those that gave this a low rating because of the CGI effects or just said this was your average, crappy sci-fi channel movie, they really should just stick with mainstream stuff that reaches their high standards of all such things. This is a really good movie. The story is good, which is really rare these days. There are stories that just go nowhere or have no clue how to end. Yeah, the CGI is not the highest quality - maybe they could have put several more million into the movie and it would have been better? But come on - if that's what yoiu need to like a movie, stick with the cookie cutter stuff from Hollywood. I would have went with a scarier looking ogre - not that this thing wouldn't scare me if I saw it, but it did look a little too made up - like it's head had been pounded down or something, but it is what it is. You can watch this one with the family too...it wasn't a 2 hour cursing/nudity fest like a lot of horror movies seem to think they need to be.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
Just a slasher with people in masks
If you watch this movie because it has Winnie the Pooh and you think it would be cool to see how that comes across in horror, I think you'll be disappointed. That's what brought me in! First off, there's not really much Winnie the Pooh as you know it beyond a quick backstory done with animated sketches. Other than that, this is just your run of the mill slasher movie. Nothing really new. The only Winnie the Pooh characters are Pooh and Piglet. Piglet is unrecognizable as piglet. I guess Winnie the Pooh is himself, but honestly, I'm not sure I'd know he was Winnie the Pooh if it wasn't in the title. I have a few issues with this move. First, it obvious they just used Winnie the Pooh so that people would watch the movie. Otherwise, it would just be another one of the hundreds of indy slasher movies out there to watch. Winnie and Piglet are just people in masks, so I had to keep reminding myself they were supposed to be themselves instead of men with masks on, but that was hard to do. What's next, a sequel for Cujo with Scooby Doo? I think this would have at least been more entertaining if they had all of the characters instead of just Winnie and Piglet.
Door in the Woods (2019)
Just ok, interesting ending
So I was going to give this movie a 3 until the end...I'm adding one star for how it ends. I won't give it away, but it's like the opposite of most movies where you see people do the right thing. They didn't in this one and that makes it unique. That being said, if a network like Lifetime ever decided to show a horror movie, this would be it. The psychic character is very cheesy and takes up a large part of the movie, and it just makes me think of something they would show on lifetime. The movie isn't scary - it has some scenes that you think may be scary, and it had some that had the potential to be scary, but those scenes were "Lifetimed" too much. I'm torn on whether or not to actually recommend someone watch this. It's kind of unique, but in the end it's just a horror movie that isn't scary at all.
Skinamarink (2022)
An Experimental Film Where The Experiment Failed
I read some of the other reviews, and several have said this should have been a short film - no doubt about that. I'm not completely sure it would even be a good short film, but it would have been better. I don't want to say nothing happens in this film, but really, nothing does. Supposedly, the doors and windows of the house are gone, but you have to read the movie summary to figure that out. There are lots of shots of the ceiling that go on forever. They intentionally put in 'video noise', and I get that effect, but the same effect would have been achieved if they had put in half of the noise they did - you can barely make out anything in most scenes. I made sure I found a couple of reviews where people had rated it highly to see what they could have possibly liked about this, and the ones I read all seemed to say they liked they way the film challenged the audience - challenged them how? Challenged them to not fall asleep? That's the only challenging thing about this film. If you like weird movies that you can't see very well and don't have much of a plot, then I guess this one's for you! Otherwise, skip it.
Bloody Summer Camp (2021)
Just watch the last hour
I rounded up my rating. This movie is a 2 most of the way, but a 7 for the last 30 mins. I don't know why the movie is sooooo long. This movie would be much better if they tried to take out 30-40 minutes of it. I think most people would probably tune the movie off 20 minutes in, because really nothing much happens, and it's a shame, because the last half hour really saves this movie if you make it through the first half.
Most of the acting is bad, scenes aren't cut the way they should be, and some of the lighting of scenes is too dark. The sound effects are good where they were used, but there's several scenes that could have used some kind of background sound and it was completely lacking - it's almost as if they switched editors for the last hour of the film.
Upurga (2021)
This is one of those kind of 'what happened?' films
Let me start by saying if you are ok with movies where you don't really quite get what happened at the end, then this movie would get a higher rating than I gave it. People in this movie sort of get 'possessed by the forest' for lack of any better way of describing it. A couple of the people that this happens to don't really seem to have any effects beyond just blacking out for a while, but if you go in this certain area of water, you're just messed up. I'm not completely sure what happens at the end...are the characters leaving or are they staying? I've seen worse movies, but I figured this one was going to be really good since it was Latvian and only had subtitles - how many Latvian films do we get to see in America, right? But I was wrong.... I found this mediocre at best.
Night Swim (2024)
Worth a watch for horror fans
It's unclear to me why this movie isn't being rated higher than it has been. This movie is not a scare-a-minute type of horror film, but the story is good. It's unclear to me at this point what people want in a horror movie, except that for the most part, if it's not a 'Scream' or 'Cabin in the Woods' where it re-defines the genre, then it's just mediocre. Even if you're not into horror, this movie should appeal to you, because the underlying story is something I think non-horror fans would like too. If you like a good story with your horror, and not gore porn, then I think this movie is for you!
Fog City (2023)
Like Caged Heat with Fog
This is one of those 'lets get all women in the film either topless or in a pushup bra' types. What attracted me was that this said there was no CGI. After watching it, it really didn't need any CGI - it's just fog and some blood. People get trapped in a house by the fog - the fog doesn't do anything, but they think it will so they barricade themselves in and, well, weird things happen. Not really weird, they just kind of go crazy. They definitely had a drone, because they have too many drone shots, but I don't think any tripods were used and at times, the lighting just washes everything out. I would choose another moving if you're looking for a horror flick.
The Girl in the Photographs (2015)
Not bad, but not satisfying either
It's sad that this was the last movie Wes Craven was involved in. I kept hoping he'd be involved in another really great horror movie, but this one fell kind of short. The movie really isn't that bad, but the ending is just kind of unsatisfying. Without giving it away, or maybe I am, nothing really happens in the end - it's like they got to the point where the movie was long enough and said, well, how do we end this as quick as possible? I just wish they would have thought a little more about how to end (if you can call it that) the story.
They also threw in some nudity, drug use, and an unbelievable amount of F-words from Kal Penn (it rivals any Seth Rogen movie) to push this even further into the B-movie category.
Fright (1971)
1971 British Version of Halloween???
I'm not completely sure what to say about this movie. It's called Fright, but I would have called it Scream because the only scary parts are when they scream out of nowhere. Honestly, I was not liking this movie at all until they gave away the twist - although can you consider it a twist if they give it away half way through? Anyway, this basically IS Halloween. A lunatic escapes from a mental institution and returns home to wreak havoc.
The acting is very good. The only part that really got me was the child's name is Tara (they kept the actual name of the actress) and is a girl - but they refer to her as 'him' throughout the movie.
Numbers (2022)
Saw-stel?
This movie seems to want to be a cross between Saw and Hostel, but is no where near as good as either. The overall story isn't bad, but the execution of it just seems to fall short. Michael Madsen has an unexplained eye injury - maybe it was real? - but they never even mention it, he's just got a bandage on his eye throughout the whole movie. The 'bad guy', who is called The Warden, has this weird metallic thing over once of his eyes, presumably to disguise him, I suppose, but none of the characters know who he is, so it seems to be more of a persona than anything else. Some of the makeup FX aren't bad, but apparently when you cut yourself with a box cutter, there's no mark left, just a lot of blood. I've seen some people comment on the acting - a lot of the acting is good, but there's a lot that isn't. It's quite the mix of acting ability. They sort of hint at a sequel at the end, but that is the last thing we need.
Steuben County (2020)
What happened?
Honestly, I have no idea what happened in this move. I think someone might have been killed, although it's not even clear if that happened or who it was. The synopsis pretty much sums it up. It culminates on a boat, where you think maybe someone was killed or maybe something else happened? I'm not sure, because you see all of the people that were on the boat in subsequent scenes, and the only clue that there might have been a murder is some police line tape in one scene later.
There is also a metal object - some kind of claw looking thing - the permeates the movie. Is it a weapon? Does it have some other significance? Maybe I'm supposed to know what it is and that would have reveled it's importance?
#float (2022)
It just seems unfinished...
I'm not really sure what to say about this movie except what I put in the title - it really seems unfinished. It's only 75 minutes and I think it really needed 15 more. A lot of movies are good until the end, and it's like they didn't really know how to end them so they come up with a really bad ending. This one sort of takes another approach - the plot isn't bad up until the end, and instead of giving it an ending, they just kind of ended the movie abruptly. Honestly, I'm not really sure what happened at the end. You're left not knowing if the creepy guy is good or bad. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this one.
616 Wilford Lane (2021)
More drama than horror
The movie seemed to move very slow to me, even though it's not that long.
It's really not a horror movie, except for the few poltergeist-like things that happen with inanimate objects, and honestly those are really the only interesting scenes.
Why they decided to make the women, who are obviously in their mid-twenties, be high school teenagers is beyond me. They never go to school nor does that really play into the plot at all.
The plot twist in the last 5 minutes is weird. I can't decide if it makes the movie better or worse. It's definitely taken too far. The 'twist' is ok, but revealing how the characters really related to each other just seemed too much.
Wired Shut (2021)
Another lng, drawn out short story
This is not a horror movie at all. You'd also think his jaw being wired shut would play into the plot, but it seems like it may have been just so they didn't need to write dialog for another person. The story isn't bad, but even at 95 minutes, it just seemed really, really long for the amount of things that happened.
