Mostly boring but redeems itself with some great fight scenes
22 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
First of all this is supposed to mainly be a comedy but I personally didn't find it that funny as I found the gags were quite cheap shallow. The characters themselves were just about humorous enough to keep the film bearable during the middle parts, as almost absolutely nothing happens. Heck, you don't even Jackie Chan for about 40 minutes.

However, I have given this a 7 because of the fight/action scenes, as the choreography and fight direction is top notch, as you would expect from the personnel involved. The film starts off with one that follows a great car chase as well, it's just that unfortunately, you have to wait till the end for the other major ones.

So if you're a fan of Jackie and Sammo's films then it's definitely worth a watch, but don't expect anything spectacular.

Great visuals and explosives fight scenes but in the end leaves you wanting

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this a martial arts movie first, and will review it as such The scenes in this movie are explosive and expansive in type, there is less emphasis on technique, more on hard hitting and flash, with people flying through all types of object and with Donnie Yen looking for something to do a flying kick off most of the time.

The fight scenes aren't numerous, so you will have to wait around for them a bit, the problem I have is there was a huge opportunity missed in the middle of the film to throw a few more in.

The plot is sufficient enough, and while the visuals are great, I feel it doesn't go well with a martial arts setting, as any fight scenes seem out of place, especially in the opening scene, which sees Donnie Yen battle with about 20 German soldiers in France, who seem to forget they are holding guns when their fellow troops are being slashed and punched a few yards in front of them.

The final fight scene could have made up for the film, and while getting off to great start, disappointingly retorts to unclear and shaky visuals and stuff is more implied than directly shown.

In conclusion, MA fans should still check it out for the brief flashes brilliance from Donnie Yen surrounded by a decent enough film if you pay too much attention to the martials arts context.

Quality of martial arts: 7.5/10 Relative amount of fight scenes: 4.0/10

One of the best fight scenes of all time makes this a absolute classic
15 January 2011
Unmissable for any martial arts fan, this film contains what many regard as the best fight scene of all time, and I am inclined to agree, making this film unmissable for MA fans.

The other fight scenes in the movie are almost just as good, the film features Jackie getting drunk and fighting his enemies using Drunken Fist which makes for hugely entertaining bouts.

Unlike most of Jackie Chans movies, this doesn't have any stunts or any strictly comedy related antics, and instead is held up by the sheer quality of the fight scenes.

Obviously the plot is completely irrelevant, and in this film it doesn't matter as the fights come thick and fast, and leave no chance you leaving you underwhelmed.
