Another Omen... Or Is It?
14 August 2009
This movie truly surprised me. I was expecting an Omen remake, and in the beginning I thought that was exactly what I was getting. Wrong! I will say that if it wasn't for the HUGE surprise ending, this movie would have been as disappointing as I expected it to be. However, it managed to keep me interested enough to see the end. The acting is decent. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the quality or special effects (like the minimal gore) because I watched it online. All I can say is that, thanks to the ending, this movie is almost kind of original. So, if you liked the Omen then you're probably going to like this movie, but if you don't like the Omen (like me) then you might get quite a surprise out of Orphan.

Beautiful film

Wonderful film. The actors are very convincing. The film takes place in the 1950's and everything about the film is just as I imagined it would be at that time. Dakota Fanning is such an amazing actress. The main character Lewellen lives such a tragic life very reminiscent of the main character in Bastard Out of Carolina. If you loved that film, then you'll probably love this one. Although this one is toned down a lot from Bastard Out of Carolina. Watching Lewellen fall from something so innocent into a tragedy is heartbreaking. I just kept wishing for things to get better for her. Some people may think that the main characters are stereotypically southern, but I come from the South and grew up in conditions not to different from Lewellens, and there ain't nothing' stereotypical about it. From the grandma with a shotgun to treating snake bites with whiskey. This is an amazing film. Give it a chance!

Awfully Awful
2 July 2009
First off- Nicolas Cage... He is, in my opinion, a dry, horrible actor so I wasn't expecting much. The main kid, Caleb, as well as several extras were awful read-with-a-script-in-their-hands actors as well. The plot is next to nil. An appropriate metaphor would be if X-Files and Star Trek (two of my most favorite shows) had a mentally retarded bastard child. Seriously. And I would have to throw a Sunday morning sermon in there, too. It's like Sci-fi meets drama. The main character discovers information of the utmost importance, but yet still has the time to dwell upon his bad relationship with his father, his religion, yada yada. The actors keep making the same predictable mistakes over and over. I had the whole movie figured out in about 20 minutes. Don't waste your time! Unless you liked and sat through the awfulness that is The Day the Earth Stood Still. Go watch I Am Legend instead. Mostly different genres, but still- watch it!
