Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)
Total crap.
I totally understand the urge to create something different out of the title as excluding "Ryu vs. Ken" or "team-up vs. Shadoloo", and to pick a SF Alpha weighted-roster. And although this is getting a little lame after Marvel adaptations, I also appreciate the attempt to furnish the chars with a darker, modern, casual look and attitude.
But such a dim witted plot is unacceptable. The title is "legend", but all we get to see is a teenager depressed enough to leave all her wealthy and satisfactory life behind in order to pursue Gen (why? a mystery even Chun-Li doesn't know), listening to the psychedelic bablings of a street fortune teller.
Purchasing slum lots illegally and opening them to luxury construction is quite an absurd line of business to choose for any SF boss. But killing all shareholders to acquire all shares? Very clever indeed...
Side character development is none, so there s not much to talk about. The general flow implies that Balrog is a loyal scum, but why? to what extent? None hinted... Vega is supposed to be an ice cold mercenary, we should have felt his cold breath on the neck of our girl. Should have seen something like Sabretooth, Agt. Smith or Cromartie, but instead we have seen monkeyish Taboo getting his ass kicked by a teenage girl at the first round, without even being able to cut her! She hanged him like a flag for gods sake...
Chris Klein and Moon Bloodgood duo is possibly the dumbest crime investigation partners you may ever see. They have no significant effect on the general plot whatsoever. But ironically enough, after their task-force is dismissed (thanks to Shadoloo pulling a few strings), the two gets to be able to assign six fully equipped vehicles carrying a SWAT team, for a midnight raid operation.
I don't think any movie from any genre could reach the stupidity level of the first SF movie. But this one was really close.
Shutter (2008)
go watch Ring remake for a fifth time. you will thank me...
I have signed up just to say how much US shutter sucked. I haven't seen the Thai version, but considering the high recommendations for it, i thought US version would be able to carry out the level of Ring in some sense anyway. My bad... Acting, script, special FXs, score, there s nothing to defend. Casting sucks too. Ghost is actually cute. Supposedly womanizer friends of Joshua Jackson just look like 2 dorks. The accident, Jane taking a final glance on the ghost before passing out, all are beyond ridiculous. Spare the lack of general continuity, there s no suspense building up. Feel for your 1,5 hours. If you are still persistent about watching a far-east horror remake, u are about to see one of the worst.
