Now let me start by saying the directing here is really not the problem, as much as a terrible writing effort that destroyed my hope of appreciating the movie.
Here's what I saw.
Group rescues kid. Group gets attacked by infected. Mother decides to run after and protect the kid they met 5 minutes ago, rather than escape with her husband she loves *kid character jacking the movie #1*. Husband abandons her, thinking he would rather survive than die trying to save some random kid they don't know (three cheers for him). Husband barely manages to escape, and is the only survivor, as far as we know.
Time moves forward, the infected have died of starvation and refugees can return to London's "green zone" under heavy military supervision and protection.
Our husband's kids return from a refugee camp, find their dad and also find out their mother died, but little boy is sad because he thinks he will forget what she looks like. Older sister has the great idea of sneaking out of the green zone to go get pictures of her from their old house *kids jacking the movie #2*. Sniper guard sees them escaping but doesn't shoot, and the military proceeds to take about 20 minutes to catch them, in which time they manage to go to their house and find their surviving mother in the attic. It appears she is somewhat infected, but can still control herself.
Mom and kids are brought back to military complex, tests are run on her, we find out she is immune but still a carrier, but nobody sticks around to guard the one potential big threat to everyone. After coming down to the military compound to find his kids, husband casually manages to reach the room where his wife is contained, kisses her, hilarity ensues.
The rest of the movie is basically running around trying to protect the 2 stupid kids that start it all because they might have inherited the same immunity to the virus as their mother, while everyone else that did nothing to deserve it is getting killed. Which might be great if you remotely cared what happen to these 2 morons, when you don't just want to see them die first.
1 out of 10 for a good directing effort wasted on abysmal writing.
