Impressive Technical Quality Meets Over-Acting in Pakistani Political Satire
Overall, the movie offers a mixed experience, with some impressive production values and an intriguing concept, but marred by certain issues. The film boasts of excellent technical qualities, including cinematography, sound design, and music that are intelligently executed. The movie's premise, unique to Pakistani cinema, is also commendable. However, the over-acting by the cast from start to finish is a major drawback, which becomes hard to absorb and cringe-worthy. The movie presents a satire on Pakistani society and politics, which accurately captures the existing challenges. However, it falls short of providing any solutions to these issues, and the limited role of the external guard at the bank feels like a missed opportunity.
Baaji (2019)
It's
Production, cinematography and general feel:
The production quality of the movie is good, but not excellent. A few shots in the movie seems purposeless and a few were shot poorly whilst others look very artsy, fancy and left a little room for improvement. The dressing in the movie is excellent. Besides, you can notice that the budget of the movie was limited as you cannot see a lot of extras (people in background) in scenes where you would expect them to be there. In my opinion, it classifies as a B class low budget movie.
Story and Script:
The story of the movie is weak in many aspects and the script is all over the place. There are problems with the flow of the movie in general. It seems like the movie was filmed with the first draft of the script. Also, the movie includes "over and cheesy" dialogs in Punjabi in some scenes that kills the normality of the movie for me.
Acting:
Acting is really bad especially from Mera, Ali and Mohsin. They tend to overact in most of their scenes. I believe some of that is curtsy of the badly written dialogs. However, Amna and Ejaz's acting is more natural.
Music and Score:
The score of the movie is fine and not noticeably poor or exceptional. Music is some what weak in my opinion as it lacks features in areas where they were essential. For example, in the party song the music has almost no base and is very flat.
Final verdict:
It's not my cup of tea and I didn't enjoy it and yes, I'm saying that about Saqib Malik's movie. I wish the team had worked more on the script, story, acting and production value.
Simulation (2019)
Nice CGI and background score but that's it
The short film is more of a display of CGI rather than a story. As a first project, it's a good effort by the filmmaker, but I believe that the story and CGI should have been well balanced. Some of the CGI sequences, especially at the beginning of the film, feels a bit unnecessary and random. Also, due to the lack of depth in the story, I feel like many scenes were uselessly extended. Low light scenes have a lot of noise. I understand that the film had a very limited budget, but with such detailed CGI noise reduction should have been considered.
Coming to the story, it seems to be a bit inspired by The Matrix, but has nothing interesting to offer. The background score of the film is very good. However, in my opinion, it's not worth paying for. Not even the great looking CGI could justify the price tag for the movie. I consider this as a type of short film, which should be available freely on YouTube or other video platforms. I do understand that the producer needs to generate revenue somehow but in my opinion, this model will not work if the movie isn't balanced. Perhaps one should review the journey of the YouTube movie "Kung Fury" and see how one person was able to provide such an entertaining, heavy on CGI, movie with a very limited budget.
