Dune (1984)
Man, this aged badly...
I watched this again after quite a few years. I remembered liking it when I first watched it but now I wonder why. This is really a mess of a film, everything is so crammed in and most of the characters feel like charicatures instead of what they should have been portrayed as. Clearly, they didn't have the cinematic abilities back then they have today but still, so many of the scenes were so ridiculous and over the top. And while I can't stand the mandatory diversity in movies these days, in this one I was distracted by how white the fremen were. Anyhow, it's a bit of a mess of a movie that does little justice to the book. I don't think the new dune does that great of oa job as everyone says it does, but this one is a mess....
Dune: Part Two (2024)
I didn't like it very much
First of all, too many changes from the book in my opinion. The characters felt a bit off. I loved much of the visuals in the film, I like the world they created, felt in line with the book and I liked the choices for the actors portraying Harkonnens especially, however, the emperor just bothered me, I thought it was such a horrible choice, just terrible, otherwise a decent cast overall that fits with the descriptions of the characters.
There were many scenes added that were not in the book and some characters were entirely removed. They were not necessarily bad if you didn't read the book, like the killing of the baron, it worked, but I couldn't help but think about that. Also the child he had with Chani is not mentioned. His little sister would have been a great, twisted character but that was removed too... small things here and there that just lowered my enjoyment of the film.
It is also crazy long. By the end of it I couldn't wait to leave the theatre.
In the end, I feel like it was great visually but I felt that it changed details that I thought needed not changing so that lowered my enjoyment of this film considerably. If I was to go back in time I'd probably watch it at home on my tv instead of the theatre. Worth watching but I think that all the praises it's getting are a bit exaggerated, but definitely better than the garbage Disney puts out, so maybe that's why people love it so much.
Dune (2021)
Quite good but not without flaws
I liked the adaptation, it added a lot visually, t hings that were not in the books, even if some of it was not how I imagined it when reading the books, I liked, iti kind of gave scale to the armies and so on, so I considered this a plus.
The choie of actors, while really good for most actors, I liked all the choices for the main characters, I really, really hated Kynes. Instead of an middle eastern man, Kynes is now a black woman, because they wanted to make the film more inclusive and becasue the director is a feminist apparently. This sort of thing just ruines it for me, but because it wasn't that main of a character I guess it make it tolerable, but still, it is just annoying to someone who read the book and wishes for the film to be as close to the book as possible. If you didn't read the book than you won't care about this at all.
Speaking of women, Jessica is just a mess of emotion for half the movie, I didn't like that either.
It was good, overall, you can only keep to the book so much when adapting it to the big screen. But those choices for Jessica and Kynes just bothered me constantly when watching the movie. I would have likely given it an 8 or 9 if I hadn't read the book (and re-read it again to have the info fresh for when watching the movie) but because of the points I mentioned before Igave it a 7.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
I don't get why it got so much hate
I really don't understand the hate this movie got, I was expecting it to be so much worse but I was pleasantly surprised. Ok, it won't win any prices for the screenplay or acting but it was a fun watch. It's a weird world with strange characters blended together, true, it's a bunch of everything but it's a fun watch, isn't that what sci-fi is supposed to be? It's way better than any of the disney star wars sequels for sure. It's got the classic by now split of the the evil white guys that are the negative characters and the diverse group of positive characters with a minority woman in the lead and the strong black men, which noawadays are mandatory, so it got that checked. The visuals are great, it has action, honestly a fun, brainless watch, for the weekend when you don't feel like thinking but just enjoy a movie. It feels like it crams a few too many things together and the way the characters are introduced feels forced, like it would have been better as a series with a full episode dedicated to each character. This is why I took points off mostly. The acting while not great is not horrible either, it just feels like a series more than a movie, I guess that would be the feeling it gives me. Still, worth a watch if you want a basic SF that takes you to a strange new universe without making you think, just a relaxing watch.
Violent Night (2022)
Wasted potential
The main character is great, the acting, the way he is portraid, loved him. The bad guys, almost good, even though annoyingly idiotic at times which made them far less interesting. The family is plain annoying in every way imaginable, from the choice of actors to the way they are portraied, etc. The premise was good that they are rich and just bad people but meh...
I liked the gore and the violence of it, just like the title said, in that sense it did not disappoint. Is it watchable? Sure, is it great,? Absolutely not.
Some of the cliches are just so stupid at times that it gets a little hard to watch but oh well, movies these days are pretty much filled with them so it's not the worst part. Make up your own mind but I feel there was a lot of wasted potential with this one.
Andor (2022)
Star Wars that actually makes sense and feels like Star Wars for Adults
After being so horribly disappointed with the garbage Obi Wan turned out to be I was afraid to be excited about this one or even write a review, but after the first season I finally have the feeling I had after seeing Rogue One, that there is hope and Disney didn't completely kill Star Wars.
This isn't the kid version of Star Wars and it is much slower paced than your usual new Star Wars film, but there is a lot of character building, the story makes sense, you feel the struggle, the tension, the ambition. The acting is top notch and it shows you a side of Star Wars that is normally hidden.
Can't wait to see the emperor in season 2.
I wish it had some more aliens as this way it feels a little too little like Star Wars, at least a few twileks or wookies would have been nice , but it's still great.
I always wondered, in a galaxy with infinite possibilities and stories to be told, why would they simply remake the old movies but worse and destroy the original story while at it - like they did with episode 7-9.
Andor gives you just that, expansion of the Star Wars universe, some more stories from behind the scenes, the evolution of Mon Mothma and the beginning of the Rebellion in a way that shows you their struggle and seems real - not like the idiotic ending of Solo.
Anyway, just happy this series exist, hope season 2 is just as good and has a few more aliens.
The Batman (2022)
So boring...
I don't understand how this movie has such a high rating, it's insanely boring, full of clichés, feels like a low budget movie with a skinny guy strangely kicking everyone's ass. Zoe was the only good thing about this movie in my opinion. Oh, and the bad guy... just lame, lame, lame, lame and boring...
Stranger Things (2016)
Season 3 killed the show...
Season 1 and 2 are magical. I binged them in a few days. I rarely get sucked into a show like this, but this was great. It had something for the kid in me, it had action, it had humor, the characters were likable, it felt like it had everything. It put you in the 80's and felt a little like Freaks and Geeks to me with a sci-fi twist to it which was fairly creepy and well made. The interactions between the characters were great and the chemistry was there, so thumbs up for Season 1 and 2.
That being said, I would stop watching at the end of season 2. Season 3 is a total piece of garbage. I am struggling to watch it, I'm at episode 5 now and it's not getting better. None of the characters feel like themselves. They are parodies at best of the characters they were in the first two seasons. But for the most part they feel like totally different characters, like I'm watching a different show. Everyone is angry and shouting, the plot makes almost 0 sense, the product placement is annoying to say the least... It's just sad, I feel betrayed almost. I initially thought they changed writers and directors because it felt so different...
So watch season 1 and 2 and leave season 3 alone... I watch it on my ipad while doing other things just because I feel I need to finish watching it now like a chore... but oh my God... season 3 is horrible...
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
They killed Star Wars
The way this new trilogy butchers Star Wars is something that amazed me more and more as I watched each new piece of garbage that came out. The force awakens was bad, it ruined Han Solo and it just seemed to be heading the wrong way, however, there was still some hope left, It didn't kill Star Wars. The second piece of garbage, the last jedi, pretty much was unwatchable. First time it was fine because of all the special effects but the more time passed the more the plot hits you with every little piece of crap detail and idiotic story, characters that are not the same as in the old movies and just the whole mess that movie is... By the end it seemed like there was nothing that could be worse that could follow, or that could fix it. Well, I guess it was a "challenge accepted"moment because oh, it got worse. This last one is just a mess, totally incoherent and all over the place and completely takes a massive crap on the old trilogy. The emperor is now back (are u f'n kiddin me?), nothing matters anymore, the whole action of episode 6 is worthless, as is Darth Vaders' sacrifice and redemption. The whole thing is just stupid, it's idiotic, oh my God, why did they have to do this to the greatest movie of our childhood? why did they set out to ruin it? why? how does this movie have more than a 5 as a rating? ok, I get it, if you don't know the old story and you are all into special effects and would watch anything just to waste some time, sure, this is great, good special effects, fun to watch, although dumb and incoherent, but as a star wars fan you should be appalled... I will never consider this new crap to be Star Wars, it just seems like a bad dream. Do not buy their merchandise and do not go see anymore of the movies, they deserve to be boycotted. Money is the only thing they understand.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)
Can we get those guys to make the next movies?
Seriously, how can a game's story be waaaay better than the whole new trilogy?
The game is very well made, annoying at times when you cannot get up when fighting bosses or bigger creatures, but it wasn't a massive problem, it should be challenging at times. Overall beautiful, well acted, good story, fun, a pleasant surprise. After the fails that were, in my opinion, the new trilogy and the new battlefront titles, this was like a breath of fresh air. Well done!
When They See Us (2019)
Amazing show if you look at it as a fictional story
While watching this show I started feeling quite angry, as if, this simply can't happen in a civilized country. So I did what any reasonable person does, google it, and, lo and behold, the story is a little bit different, and the difference is enough to make me take 4 stars off this title, which otherwise is very well done and entertaining. The cinematography and the acting are both flawless, great job in that regard, but the story is massively and visibly biased. The attacks on random people in the park are downplayed entirely, even though there is considerable proof that they attacked people and so on. Yes, horrible confusion but somewhat justified considering they were knocking random people out in the park at around the same time as the rape while shouting racial slurs against whites. Just do what I did, google it, and you'll see. Still, worth a watch.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Great start
Loved the first episode, felt like Star Wars. Now we just have to figure out how to delete episodes 7-9 and Solo from our memory and we're good. There wasn't that much story in it but it had some elements that definitely hooked me, as a huge fan of the classics and massive hater of the last 3 episodes. It left me curious and happy that the Star Wars I felt in love with is back. Mystery, crazy, far far away world that is a western and an adventure story in space. Hope they won't ruin this as it was the first actually good Star Wars made by Disney after Rogue One. The future episodes will decide how this turns up but the start was beautiful and I can't wait for more.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Really boring with little to no plot
I have not wanted to walk out of a movie so badly in a long time. For the first half I was waiting for the movie to get good, or scary. It never did either. For the second half I pretty much figured that it won't improve much and I was just bored out of my mind waiting for it to end.
Half the movie is about how they evolved and their personal fears and whatnot, you barely see Pennywise throughout the movie. You mostly see him at the end and somehow, even though he's humongous he manages to be outrun, he never follows them for a very long time, just a very dumb villain, he was not scary at all. He had a couple of great moments but they were way too few and far between.
The cast was actually pretty good, they did some great casting decision, the older version of the characters actually look like they are those kids grown up for the most part. A few of them I think were amazing choices and the acting was solid. the special effects looked great to the point where the CGI was close to perfection in my opinion, except for a few moments, but overall it didn't feel obvious and forced (except for the old woman part).
So a massive fain in my opinion, very bland, unexciting and plain boring. Ok to watch on your computer 10-15 minutes at a time, in the background while eating breakfast or something. Definitely not worth the money to go see it in a cinema.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Such an amazing ride just to fail so hard at the end
I gave it a 10 star rating all the way to the end. I chaged it to a 7 today instead of a 4 since most of the show was a pretty amazing ride, however the last season, while pretty good overall, had the worst ending imaginable. Jesus Christ, what a waste... this show was close to perfection almost all the way to the end.. yet such a bad ending...
Bird Box (2018)
they are sure running out of ideas at Hollywood
First of all, is it just me or is Sandra Bullock looking more and more like Michael Jackson as she ages?
Ok, now to the movie, this movie just felt like a similarly (although a little more) stupid yet somewhat different version of the movie where people never farted for a couple of years or whatever - A Quiet Place.
I am a huge end of the world movie fan, make a movie about the apocalypse and I'll watch it, but lately these movies are just getting stupider and stupider. I don't wanna get into spoilers but the whole premise is just silly, even for a science fiction fan that will watch just about anything sci-fi this felt stupid.
I would skip this one...
The Predator (2018)
This movie is a joke
I would have gave it a 1 but there are a few decent action scenes. This whole movie is just so bad.... omg... where to begin... First of all... the plot makes no sense and is all over the place, it's just... wow... instead of going to bed I'm writing this review because I just hated it so friggin much... it seems like a fan made film, honestly.... how did anyone ok this garbage? I was so happy there was a new predator movie out, I loved the series, I even loved AVP, even the second one.... This however is just... wow... horrendous... stay away from it if you care at all that the story makes sense... if you just want a mindless sci-fi only for some special effects and to pass the time watch it, but if you care for a movie that makes some sort of sense... skip this... so bad.... almost ruined predator for me...
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
I don't get it, it was actually pretty good
As someone who absolutely hates the Force Unleashed and the Last Jedi I actually found Solo very enjoyable and felt that it captured a lot of the Star Wars spirit, although in a very different style than the old films. It felt more like a video game, like the Jedi Knight series or something. I found it quite a bit of fun to watch and found it covered the plot whole with the Kessel run quite well. Sure, it wasn't a masterpiece, it could have been way better but it's a solid 5 out of 7 any day. Fun to watch movie, way better than the sequels, has a fun feeling to it, not without it's flaws but overall a fun movie to watch. A mature audience will probably appreciate it more.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Liked it, pretty good, keeps you tense, however, doesn't anyone fart in this world?
I was wondering the whole movie, seriously, doesn't anyone fart? doesn't anyone snore? wtf, there is no way you can be that quiet. It was fun to watch but doesn't make that much sense, however decent, they did a great job with what they had, if you like end of the world movies this is pretty good.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
So I watched this movie a second time and it gets worse every time
I am literally amazed at all the idiotic things I discover in this movie. Oh my God this movie is stupid and makes no sense. Why has this movie series been cursed like this? They took a massive dump on Luke Skywalker's character but oh my god.... oh my god... just horrendous.... I am seriously consider not watching any of the new movies anymore... The force awakens took Leia and Han's story and threw it in the toilet, then took Han Solo and threw him in the toilet, from the commander of the rebellion transforming him into a lowlife... now this movie finishes the job by taking Luke's character and completely destroying him... they even take Yoda and take a massive dump on him as well... this movie is just.... Christ allmighty....
Game Over, Man! (2018)
Didnt' know it wasn't Workaholics the movie until I looked at the reviews on IMDB
I literally thought the whole time this was workaholics the movie, now I guess it makes a little more sense that it isn't, but it definitely could be with maybe 3 changes in dialogue.
The movie has very puerile, adolescentine type humor, lots of dick jokes (and actual dicks), it's dirty, gross, offensive, what can I say, I loved it. Not for the politically correct.
Clearly not for everyone, it's a lot of fun, it you are the kind of person that doesn't mind obscenities and are looking for a silly funny movie, this is for you.
The Shape of Water (2017)
A beautiful movie visually that is full of plot holes
The movie is a pleasure to look at. The artwork and sound is gorgeous for the most part. It starts off great but then it just... I don't know... seems to become a little silly. It's riddled with plot wholes which, granted, can be overlooked since it's basically about the beauty of it and the fantasy but still, the part where she waited for the rain to fill the canal before she released him... seriously? you couldn't just dump him straight in the ocean? or the wooden bathroom door holding a room full of water... and all kinds of little things like that, which look decent but could have been done way better... couldn't they have had a water tank on the roof or maybe a pool in the basement or something where they could sneak in? I mean... you filled up the bathroom with water from the faucet? that is just lazy writing...
Overall a good watch, maybe to watch with you special other but those little mistakes take away from it...
Bright (2017)
Surprised by the bad reviews
I don't understand how can you hate this movie, it's actually a lot of fun and the universe it puts you in is very cool and interesting. Yeah, they could have done more with it, maybe it deserved an 8, but overall it was a great watching experience, everything looked so real, the orcs were cool and badass. At first I thought, oh great, another metaphor for white people are evil and everyone else is awesome but it didn't go there at all. Will Smith's character is kind of an ahole which made the movie less enjoyable for me, I didn't like him at all from beginning to end and I wasn't crazy for the little elf girl either, but everyone else I thought did a great job. The orcs all bad and mean, the elves all fancy and elegant, all in a modern setting together in real life America, that is just cool.
It's not without its flaws and the script could have been better at times but overall it was a very cool movie to watch.
It could work as a series, something like Game of Thrones, with 12 long episodes per season that feel like movies, it definitely has potential.
I personally give it a big thumbs up and I rarely like movies that come out these days, I hated the new Star Wars and pretty much all the Transformers except first couple of ones, and I loved the new Blade Runner, so, if you like a somewhat slower pace then the mess movies like Transformers are these days, watch this, it's quite an experience.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Loved it, a pleasant surprise
I feel the bar has been set so low these days, I find most of the action movies coming out to be complete garbage. I'm thinking here about all the heroes movies, transformers and the likes who are just bland and pointless with stories that are getting more and more ridiculous.
I am also a huge Star Wars fan and I think what they are doing now with the two new movies is taking a huge dump all over the Star Wars universe and everything about it and while watching Blade Runner I couldn't help but wonder why did Star Wars get stuck with the village idiots and while other movies can have this amazing of a sequel so many years later.
The movie is wonderful visually, making a seamless transition from the 80's movie to the new one, they blend perfectly. The story is good and it has a lot of little details and cool things if you are careful to look for them. I was actually looking at the snow flakes towards the end and I was wondering if they were going to be fake looking like they always to din movies and I had the pleasant surprise to see that the ones that landed on Gosling were melting after a second or two. But there are a lot of fun little things like that, I might rewatch it just to catch more of them. The love scene with the AI is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time and there are other thought provoking ideas.
The main character is a little dry and you don't quite bond with him like you should which is the only main flaw of this movie, however, because of what the character represents, making him more humane would have probably lost some of the feel of the movie.
Overall I am impressed, haven't liked a movie this much in a while, I've been constantly disappointed, especially by the two pieces of garbage that are the new Star Wars movies but this one proved to be a winner.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
How does this movie have a worse rating than Episode VII or Wonder Woman?
This movie is actually a lot of fun, visually stunning, it's just so artful and beautiful. The story is pretty good too. It's sooo much better than both Episode VII and Wonder woman, yet such a lower score... I guess a movie has to be idiotic to get above a 7 on IMDb these days... It would have worked better with two older main characters. They seem too young and childish for their roles. They seem a little out of place, at least the guy, the girl does a better job than him, but it's not so much their fault as it's that of whomever wrote the script, which at times is pretty bad, especially when they talk to each other. Otherwise the movie is very good, feels fresh and was a pleasant surprise in the massive mass of garbage films that are coming out of Hollywood these days...
The Age of Spin: Dave Chappelle Live at the Hollywood Palladium (2017)
quite disappointed
I am a big fan of Chappelle's older stuff, both his stand-ups and his show so needless to say I was very excited about this new stand up. Watching it was the saddest thing ever, the man completely lost his humor and seems to have just accumulated frustrations and issues, not funny just sad...
