Really Bad Movie
16 January 2023
Pretentious and slow. Grotesque to say the least. It pretends to be "different". However, it does not accomplish well this task.

The actors are fine, and the cinematography is not bad. However, the final product is not fortunate. It does not impress, does not connect.

Also, Don Quixote speaking catalan is not precisely the best approach. It is very difficult to manage to portray an unlikable Don Quixote, as the Don is in fact one of the most likable charachters of universal literature. But they accomplished precisely that. It breaks the originality of the novel without giving anything superb in exchange ( we could easily forgive departures from convention if these departures were successful, but they were not).

Too long, devoid of charm, unsuccesful attempt.

Not So Bad as they Say
28 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I remember i watched the movie many years ago, and i have watched it again very recently.

This film is not so bad as the other reviewers say. On the good side, It manages to introduce an interesting point of view about Sade. On the bad side, it lacks rythm and the " Sex Scenes" are utterly laughable.

Nevertheless, if you have read something about Sade, you might enjoy. The Script is irregular, the actors are decent.

There are a few moments where an atmosphere was almost created. While the movie is not Special, it is not so detestable as they say.

Movie with a few worthy moments
26 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In general, a bad movie.

However, it does have a few good moments. I enjoyed very much the murders in the brothel, and all appearances of the great Maria Rohm.

I also liked the guest appearance of Jack Palance, as " Brother Antonin", a Jess Franco interpretation of the Sadian Castle of Silling and the Confraternity of Libertines, vaguely inspired by 120 Days of Sodom and Juliette.

Good Scenes in the part where the beautiful Sylva Koscina is murdered.

Forgotten Jewell
17 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched this movie a couple of times. The movie has two parts. In the first one, a pious preacher is tempted by the devil himself, surrendering to satan in a very interesting way.

In the second part, the son of the preacher is seduced again by the devil.

The great Ivan Mosjoukine has a double role, as the preacher and the son's preacher.

His wife in real life, actress Nathalie Lissenko, plays the preacher's lover and the preacher's son mother.

The devil himself is portrayed by Alexander Chabrov. A great performance, this guy almost steals the show.

Also, the very beautiful Vera Orlova has a minor role as the super pretty young socialite.

It is a great story about Satanic Seduction, devilry, temptation, and the dangers of extreme hedonism.

The movie is great: strong drama, demonic music, cursed partitures and portraits, a hereditary curse, etc.

It does deserve a proper edition and remastering. It has influenced a few movies.

The ecstatic-frantic scene in which the women dance, possessed, is mesmerising.

Enjoy it if you can.

Pretty Decent All-Star Movie
11 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Surprising movie, with a crowd of stars, a bit of a weak plot, and a few good scenes. The movie does not take itself very seriously. Gilbert Roland as the Chief Mafia Boss, with a super-yacht docked in Montecarlo is just great.

Good performances from Anthony Quayle and Trevor Howard.

Entertaining movie, a bit outdated, with some actual scenes filmed in Iran before the Revolution. The movie was promoted by the United Nations, and it is an oddity and an historical curiosity.

Very Realistic underrated Movie
11 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Very good little gem. A very good exploration of the opium/morphine/heroin trade, through the Turkish Route.

It is all well described, almost like a documentary, all the chain of dealers, from the peasants that cultivate the poppy in Turkish Villages to a vast network of intermediaries, including shipping agents, hidden laboratories, processing in caves, shady " importers", etc. Amazing real scenes of Turkish women cutting the poppies to obtain " The Poppy Milk". Great Stuff.

Do not be put off by the comments of other reviewers. If you like crime movies, and you have an interest in the dark side of the drugs market, you must watch this one. Ben Gazzara is OK, he just delivers an acceptable performance.

Underrated little jewell.

Opium (1919)
10/10
Underrated Jewell
6 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It is difficult to understand the low score of this very good film.

Opium, 1919, is a drama by forgotten director Robert Reiner, who made movies about social matters, such as drug-addiction, homosexuality or prostitution. Did they dare in Hollywood at that moment? They did not. So, the attempts to diminish this movie and merely label it as an early exploitation film are really poor.

This is a very good melodrama, shot after Germany lost WWI. There is exoticism, escapism, and lots of drama. Great and famous actors such as Werner Kraus or a very young Conrad Veidt are here. Sybill Morell, a forgotten beauty that has an uncanny resemblance with Eva Green is also here. Excellent Dream Sequences that recreate the Opium Dreams, in a land of Horned Gods, Nymphs and Satyrs.

The movie has six acts. The action takes part in Europe, India and China. Opium Dens, an Evil Chinaman, a story of revenge and addiction, of fear and reverence for a legendary toxin called Opium. If you like silent movies, give it a try. It is not as the other reviewers say. I have actually own a copy of the digitally remastered version of this film, i have watched it recently, and the movie is quite decent. Pity it is underrated.

Egotistical Complacence
6 June 2021
Overrated, self-indulgent, narcissistic, and empty. Good aesthetics, Marcello wears nice sunglasses, Anouk Aimee is very pretty, a few obvious things, lots of pretentious scenes, a few famous actors and actresses just occupying space. The movie has no grandiose meaning. It only pretends to have it. A big aesthetic voidness. There is nothing in this movie but a few clichés.

Dark and Underrated Movie about Loneliness
5 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A secondary, misunderstood and understated movie by Great Master Luis Berlanga, with Michelle Piccoli in the leading role. The beautiful Ada Rassimov is Piccoli's wife, (she is the sister of the unfortunate Ivan Rassimov, the actor).

A succesful dentist, rich, sophisticated, from a high bourgeois background, is visibly tired of life. He is also tired of his marriage.

The movie deals in a subtle and original way with topics such as the impossibility of communication, loneliness, misogyny, jealousy, and the mechanisation of feelings. It also shows a strong anti-religious stance. The film is extremely corrosive against social institutions such as marriage, respectability, etc.

It also touches suffering and boredom.

The plot is at times surreal, in a very " Buñuel" style. The movie also deals with domination and BDSM fetishes.

The scene with the orgy of Spanish Immigrants, is of an unprecedented ferocity and is a direct attack on what is called " Deep Spain".

It is intentionally disgusting, and in my opinion, borrows a bit from " Viridiana", from Buñuel.

So, if you want to see a movie with a dentist who leaves his wife for a poliuretane sex doll imported from Japan, this is the one. The guy also introduces the doll to his mother and friends, and mimics a grotesque marriage with the mannequin, as well as recording himself with the sexy doll. The doll is abducted by a gang of very freakish spanish immigrants who dress the doll as a " Virgin Mary", and rape her in a mega-bizarre gang-bang scene. Strong Stuff. Very Dark Movie.

A Different Approach to Lycanthropy
28 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It is a strange movie. We could say that in this final movie of the Saga, a more existentialist and ill Waldemar Daninsky is described. Finally, redemption through love comes.

This picture is Noteworthy because it does not deliver much gore or nudity for a change.

Also, there is a strong critic of intolerance and xenophobia. At the beginning, there is a scene involving Nazis in Central Europe.

Also, there is a strong critic of church and religion.

Authority and Modernity are ridiculed too.

The budget is low, there is some atmosphere, and the plot deviates a bit from the usual routes.

For connoisseurs, we must mention that Dr. Westenra is Amparo Muñoz, Miss Universe 1974, turned junkie, addicted to Heroine, and not looking great. Extremely Morbid.

A different take, end of the Saga.

Surprisingly Macabre and Grotesque
26 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Cons: Well, as it is clear, it is one of those rip offs of the famous movie by William Friedkin. Also, the budget is extremely low, and it shows. Some of the actors are really bad. And i mean awful bad. Cheesy? Of course! It was to be expected.

Pros: Amando de Ossorio is in charge of the team. He needs no presentation for experienced and hardened horror movie fans. While the movie is certainly cheap, it does have a weird, grotesque, macabre atmosphere. The shocking infanticide in the name of Satan, a postmortem castration performed by a murderous girl, some strong profanity, and a catholic priest with an exotic past and a crazy ex-girlfriend.

Yes, i know.

It is bad, but highly entertaining if you are not expecting a " masterpiece".

The make-up of the girl is very weird. It somehow reminds me of Sam Raimi " Evil Dead".

This movie is from 1975. Evil Dead is from 1981.

So, Amando de Ossorio stabs William Friedkin, and Sam Raimi stabs Ossorio.

I love these creative, original rip offs!

Too Manipulative for my Taste
21 May 2021
I love Japanese Cinema. I watched with patience this movie. I liked the filming and the actors. However, i found the story a bit too much sentimental, as well as a bit hypocritical.

The story is quite predictable, and there are too many tears. There is also an excessive use of singing. If they had decreased the level of emotional and ideological manipulation, i would have given the movie a 7.

Arrebato (1979)
10/10
Accursed Masterpiece of the Vampire Genre
1 May 2021
Arrebato is the enigmatic masterpiece of the accursed, tragic and unsuccessful Ivan Zulueta, a musician and graphic designer that made a very brief career as a movie director.

Zulueta was the designer of the movie posters of the very successful Pedro Almodovar.

The director of Arrebato struggled all his life with a strong addiction to heroine and depression. He had long treatments with methadone.

Arrebato ( Rapture) is a movie that defies labels. It is a mix of fantastic, horror, and experimental cinema. It is a movie that had a very, very short budget, and it was a miracle that it was finished.

You may like or dislike the movie, but it will not leave you indifferent. You even may end up yelling: what the hell was that about!

But everybody watches the movie till the end. Arrebato has something, an eerie quality that makes you stay in the sofa and pay attention to the film till the very end. It is indifferent that you like it or dislike it.

The movie is " far darker than darkness", freakish and weird, told from a completely amoral perspective.

It has some surreal moments, Buñuel Style. Also, as many have pointed out, there is some slight " David Lynch" touch.

This is a very influential movie.

A forgotten and unsuccessful movie that many great directors have watched and copied.

"The Hunger", with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve, borrows heavily from Arrebato. "The Addiction", of Abel Ferrara, is also "borrowing". Many others do, including some very well known people.

Unfortunately, Zulueta and Arrebato are never given credit.

Arrebato is a deeply disturbing movie, avant-garde, extremely somber, that explores the darkest parts of your soul.

Arrebato is a story of Trauma, Addiction and Bliss, of a search for reality and consciousness.

Also, the movie presents the story mixing up ghosts, bisexuality, vampires, murders, parasites, and life itself as an addiction, in an extremely unconventional style.

In the end, the movie is a study of cinema itself, and the fusion of the audience ( viewer) with cinema itself ( the viewed).

Of course, the movie was not understood. At the time, critics largely ignored the movie. After many years, and after the death of Zulueta, always with a fragile health due to his drug problem, critics have finally praised the movie. Slowly, the influence of the film is being acknowledged.

One of the greatest movies of the vampire genre. You will not see it in one of those lists that everybody reads on the internet.

If you can get a copy, buy it. This is like an antique, a unique piece for collectors.

I advice a second viewing of the movie a couple of months later. You will be amazed. I think there is a DVD in Amazon with English Subtitles.

If you like it dark, weird and highly disturbing, do not think it twice and watch it!

Poor Script and Bad Actors
30 April 2021
The story has good potential. However, it is all in a very poor style. The movie is difficult to watch even for those predisposed to like it.

The choice of actors is not the best.

It all leaves much to be desired.

The director, who is well known, executes a mediocre work.

Predictable end, typical soft-core nudity for the moment.

Movie has not aged well.

Bad work, which could have been more better with not much work. Pity.

Overrated as Usual
3 April 2021
The characters are horrible. Poor story, with a very primitive sense of humour, easy and grotesque. The Princess does not look the part, and Toshiro Mifune, is not the best.

It is a very boring movie, slow, long, and with no reward whatsoever. There is nothing clever about it. It is all very superficial and mediocre.

Great Directors also make bad movies. This is an example of it.

I have always found that Kurosawa's reputation is exaggerated in the west. I do prefer Ozu, Naruse, Mizoguchi, Yamanaka, or more modern directors such as Shohei Imamura. All of them much better, in my opinion.

In any case, this is not the best Kurosawa.

Long Moralistic Tale
8 March 2021
Overrated, as many movies from Kurosawa. It is very long, the performance of the lead actor is not the best. A lot of Moralistic interference. It looks like a Frank Capra movie. Some people like this type of stories. I prefer doing the judgement myself, instead of being administered " Moraline Pills".

Not Genuine
20 February 2021
I give it a five because the actress is nice. This type of movie has some sex-appeal for people who are unable to distinguish appearance from substance. It does lack authenticity. It is a pseudo-intellectual concoction. Overrated, as Kieslowski. If you like true art, watch a Theo Angelopoulos movie.

High Tension (2003)

Copy Paste Movie
18 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first part of the movie is a clear copycat of Austrian 1997 Michael Haneke film, called " Funny Games". In that movie, the father, the mother, the dog and the son, are murdered. The movie has good gore, and it hints at the very bad twist at the end a few times. The twist is quite dishonest, and it destroys the structure of the movie. It is not necessary to make sense out of everything. I like non linear narratives, and ambiguous interpretations. Nevertheless, the movie fails miserably to deliver quality. The finale is absolute rubbish. An early clue about the nonsense we are gonna get is when we see the head thing, at the beginning of the movie. Very bad omen. The film does redeem itself for the next 40 minutes, building up a decent atmosphere. After the twist, one feels the director has conned everybody, including himself. The result is a mediocre movie.

Artsy and Preachy Torture Porn
18 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You all know the story. Two young guys get away with a home invasion and they torture and murder everybody in the family, dog and son included. The cool thing about the movie is that the story transgress on purpose all the cinematic conventions. This means that the killers have a terrific time, enjoy the bloodlust fest and carry on with the rampage without being caught. Apparently, the purpose of the movie was to expose the sickness of violence, blah, blah, blah. Well, this is just a lame excuse to make a picture that every psychopath out there will love. I give it a good rating because of three uncommon facts in this type of movie: 1. All the actors were very good, realistic, and gave extremely good performances. 2. The violence is extremely intense, of the emotional type, amplified tenfold by the masterful restriction of explicit scenes. 3. The movie plot breaks on purpose with all cinematic conventions of this genre. The downside is the preachy tone of the movie. It is highly hypocritical. In the end, the movie is high quality torture porn, very sophisticated. Also, i did not like the metacinematic things: one of the actors talks to the audience, looking at the camera, trying to involve the observer. I am not a fan of this type of thing. My advice is that you should watch the movie, unless you're disgusted by stories that do not have morals and are completely nihilistic. My gut feeling is that the director enjoyed himself very much.

Martyrs (2008)

Suffering, Healing and Transcendence
15 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a good movie. It does display, however, a significant level of explicit violence. Therefore, viewers not familiar with this type of movie should be cautious. This movie tells the dark and sad emotional journey of a couple of dysfunctional, depressed, abused, neurotic girls. Both of them are subjected to extreme violence and torture. It turns out that the torturers were a cult of old and wealthy researchers, interested in knowing if there is life after death. They hoped to inflict " martyrdom" on the girls by the systemic use of torture. Here, the meaning of martyrdom is quite limited. Through this torture, they hope that some of the girls can actually attain an ecstasy experience, a near death experience that can be reliable, able to shed light about the ultimate mysteries of life. One of the girls achieves this ecstasy state, and tells her experience to the cult leader before finally dying. Shortly after that, the cult leader shots herself and avoids revealing the content of the conversation. Many people out there have completely misunderstood the movie. As i see it, it is just about life. Life is suffering till you let go. When you accept suffering and pain as it is, it stops. Nothing can hurt you when you live in full acceptance. This is the meaning of " letting go". So, the film is a metaphor about suffering. It also touches important topics such as fear, abuse, depression, obsession, and the nature of reality. The movie also touches the topic of transcendence, and the need for it that everybody has. The ending is ambiguous, and it is open for interpretation. In my view, the girl actually tells the cult leader that there is something in the afterlife. She is so affected and emotional about this that she commits suicide, as she is now not fearful of what might be " in the other side". However, it can also be interpreted in a more nihilistic way: " There is nothing, life is unworthy, i kill myself". You must see and decide. The thing about the simplified meaning of martyr that the movie proposes is however not of my liking. It is a bit empty. Anyway, you must see this movie, and have your own opinion. Hope i helped. Thanks.

Excellent Atmosphere and Very Good Ending
14 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent cinematography, and good actors. The movie is aesthetically clever. The action is slow, and you have some idea of how things may develop. But it is not predictable, as many have said. The clothing of the people in the commune is a bit eastern European, with a Baltic Look. We must remember that Sweden has been linked for many years to The Baltic Countries. So, i do not find strange that this cult has clothes in line with the traditional clothes of countries like Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, etc. In fact, they share in many cases the same mythology. The story is about how to overcome trauma through empathy and the sharing of emotions. The approach is shamanistic. I have lived in the Northern Himalaya for long periods of time, and some people with traumas benefit from experiences such as " shouting together", " crying together", etc. Some of these techniques are still in use nowadays. The movie describes the emotional journey of girl, about her overcoming grief and trauma, and find help in a community. The movie has a very good end. It is all told in a fairytale narrative. In fact, the drawings and paintings in the movie tell us pretty much the story. The movie is very scary, but not in the cheap way of average movies. Those used to " jump scares" movies will not like it. It deals in psychological horror. The movie also depicts a return to the primeval, to a world of agriculture, paganism, and communal living. It also represents how sects and cults operate. The cult is ruthless, only focused on survival and tradition. It also deals with interesting topics such as tribal eugenics, human sacrifice, communion and sharing of the pain, anthropology, atavism, and communal education of children. Also, there is some gore, and some black humour. It is a very good representation inspired in some interesting Sun Cults from Eastern Europe. Very interesting, bizarre and highly disturbing movie. Very original. The director is courageous, and does not conform to narrative cliches. Dani, the main character, in fact becomes a Queen and somehow reconnects with life, completes her process of healing, and finds a new family. Great Movie.

Good Atmosphere
12 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The actors and the cinematography are very good. The movie feels authentic. The story has very good potential. The angle worked by the director is good. It is a story about a family unable to fit in. It is a time of puritanism. They are basically expelled from the village, due to religious problems, so they move to a place near a big, primordial forest. They cannot take it. Slowly, they lose their faith, and the mistrust and violence begin. Their descent into despair is very well filmed. At the end, the supernatural twist is not bad, but it does not feel very genuine. It lacks something. Nevertheless, it is worthy of consideration. I liked the movie. There is a lot of violence, be warned. Also, the movie is not good if you are hard of hearing. It is better to have the subtitles on. The movie deals with many things. You find religion and superstition, survival, fear, tenderness, repression, etc. It also has some fascination for " the powers of darkness". People out there calling it a masterpiece are perhaps a bit overenthusiastic. Nevertheless, it is a pretty good movie, much better than the average Hollywood flick.

Neo-Marxism and Inverse Snobbery
4 February 2021
Repulsive story, highly prejudiced. The movie deals very unsuccessfully with the topic of social class struggle. Basically, the movie offers a violent tale of resentment and inverse snobbery. The rich are stupid and undeserving, the poor are a brotherhood of crooks, etc. It both denigrates rich and poor at the same time. It criticises capitalism and meritocracy but offers no alternative whatsoever. There is a dangerous apology of social revenge ( in the view of the movie, which sides ideologically with the poor, these are justified to kill the rich). It furthers violence, division and polarisation. Repugnant view of the world. Biased, Immoral, Unreal. Pure unadulterated prejudices. Not surprised that Cannes and Hollywood give it prizes. These awards are clearly political. Cinematic Quality has nothing to do with it. All this hype furthered my opinion about the inherent detestability of this very bad movie. Overrated is an understatement. Sick film, sick story. We live in decadent times. It is obvious.
