A Good Year (2006)
8/10
Just a lovely film!
16 April 2010
I bought this film on a whim whilst in the supermarket, not really sure what to expect if I'm honest. Well I'm glad to say that I was very pleasantly surprised! What the viewer receives in A Good Year is few hours of laughs, good times and a good story too! Combine that with stunning visuals and picturesque setting that Turner would've been proud of and that all comes together nicely into one of my favourite feel-good films.

If someone had said to me "It's Russell Crowe, playing a posh Englishman, on a wine estate", I probably would've laughed, but he pulls it off admirably, never seeming too corny or over the top. There are also fine performances from Albert Finney and Marion Cotillard to back this up.

One of the most impressive things about this film have to be the visual feast we are treated to. The location for proceedings is sublime and the cinematography just brings it to another dimension, creating an atmosphere that cannot bettered.

If I were to suggest some improvements for the film, I would simply suggest making more use of Didier Bourdon, who puts in a wonderful turn as Duflot.

Overall, a fine film and definitely worth a watch

A good film, but not without its flaws
7 November 2009
Well, I must say that I was looking forward to this movie - after reading the cast list and hearing a brief overview of the plot I felt that it had good potential. And whoever made the trailer did a very good job of making me want to see it.

Unfortunately, there seemed to me to be a certain amount of confusion about the film - were the directors entirely sure what type of film they were making? There are elements of comedy, satire, drama, action... but without having enough of each of these things to really give the movie a proper feel or direction. It veers close to being funny... and then veers off. It comes close to satirising American military tactics... and then goes off in another direction. I felt that a little more focus was needed overall to bring the film together.

In terms of acting, I think that generally the actors can be pleased with their work - I don't remember any specific cases of over or underacting, and the characters were about as believable as they could be in a film like this. As far as the comedy goes - this film was primarily marketed as a comedy - there are some genuinely funny moments! Overall, however, I felt that some bits needed to be trimmed down - the constant Jedi references were funny the first time but quickly wear thin.

The plot also needed a little bit of work: it started off with a promising storyline, and good editing I might add, but seemed to lose its way towards the end. It seemed as if the film-makers didn't really know where to go next. There were a few scenes that really didn't need to be included either - Robert Patrick's contribution to the film really added nothing, and could easily be removed. It was entirely forgettable and was simply a device to get the characters to the next place that they needed to be.

Overall I'd say this this is a fairly good film, certainly worth seeing. As for buying the DVD, that I'm not so sure about. If you're looking for a way to spend and hour and a half of your evening, while there are better films to see than this there are also considerably worse ones.

Old School (2003)

A thoroughly good watch

I love this movie.

I really do - I like the story, I like the characters, I think it's well acted... I really can't find any faults with this film!

I can understand that it may not be to everyone's taste - gross-out comedies certainly do have their particular 'target audiences', but compared to some films put into this genre it's really not too bad (White Chicks for example...)

This also has the rare distinction of being one of the only films I've seen where Will Ferrell doesn't make me want to rip my own face off, he's actually quite funny here! The birthday party scene with the 'tranq. incident' is hilarious!

My word, my word...

This truly god-awful excuse for a film really should never have been made

As has been (quite rightfully) said before, there is not a tangible plot in sight, the acting is shoddy, the locations are laughable (the 'auditorium' in the 'remote compound' is quite clearly a conservatory - with the neighbour's house clearly in sight!!), the script is non-existent... this movie thoroughly deserves its bottom 100 position!

I found this movie being sold for £1 in my local supermarket and thought it might be good for a laugh... I'm now off to demand my money back. I firmly believe that I could have done a better job making this movie myself - the acting, the direction, the writing, the cinematography (I know, what cinematography!?!?!) - I could have done them all better

And yes, the mummy is fat. 'Nuff said
