A Man Apart (2003)
maybe vin diesel can act. . .
Vin Diesel plays Sean Vetter, a street gangster turned narcotics officer. His partner Demetrius Hicks (Larenz Tate)carries the same story. The two work to take down the leader of the Mexican Drug Cartel. After which, Vetter's wife (Jacqueline Obradors) is killed. The story follows Vetters and his loyal partner as they together take down the men who killed Vetter's wife. I was pleased to see Vin Diesel stray away from his usual role as the invincible tough guy with typical motives. Although I have not been amazed by his previous works (Friday, The Negotiator, and Set it Off), he showed his talent in portraying situationally the results vengence can inflict on a person. I was disappointed with the music in this movie. Music is something that lets the audience feel what the characters are facing and what the situation is conveying if used correctly. This film, however, failed to accomplish this. On the whole, this movie was a refreshing action movie. It was successful in mixing drama with action. 7/10
Windtalkers (2002)
Nauseating
When I saw that it was a Woo film, I wasn't expecting much, but when I started watching my minimal expectations were not even met. The war scenes are pointless because not only are they long and drawn out, but you have no idea what the situation is. There is no explanation. It is simply USA fighting JAPAN. Each battle was just explosions. They were good explosions, but big booms don't mean anything. You can get that at any firework stand for 10 dollars. The acting was poor. The plot was ridiculous. That wasn't what bothered me though. I read that there was a $115 million dollar budget. This is $45 million more than Saving Private Ryan. This brought tears to my eyes. The sets looked like playgrounds. The dirt looked like it was just bought from home depot. There were scenes with mulch. The holes and ditches were perfectly dug like they were from bulldozers. It just looked fake. In all, this movie serves only as an example of what not to watch.
Romper Stomper (1992)
not stomping my romp
Romper Stomper accomplishes 2 things. It illustrates how hate can drive people to obsession and dependency on expressing their hatred. It also shows that Russell Crowe is an unbelievable actor. Action movies can be successful if the violence serves a purpose. In American History X, a man gets brutally raped, a man gets his face crushed in on a curb; but it serves to emphasize the need for change and where hate got them which leads into a brilliant conclusion. This movie portrays hate, but no redemption. It makes the audience think "now what?." Russell Crowe was great, but not good enough to Stomp my Romp.
They (2002)
Unoriginal, poorly acted, typical 80's horror flick without the gore
The movie starts off trying to mimic the "I see dead people" scene from 6th Sense. Next it tries to mimic the suicide scene from 6th Sense. Then it tries to mimic the ghost descriptions from the 6th Sense. Finally Harmon moves on to copying the sound effects from Signs. The only thing the movie succeeds at is predictability and bad acting. Although Laura Regan's character is a vast improvement on the usual big breasted blonde actress that plays her role, it does not make up for her inability to act. All in all, this movie does nothing more than throw a poorly developed idea at a camera and hope that people would see it anyway due to the fact that Wes Craven is presenting it. (by the way- Wes Craven had nothing to do with the production of this film)
