Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Cool, slick, and fun
If you like violent and vulgar, watch Heist and The Score.
If you like a fun story with a great ensemble cast, watch Ocean's Eleven or The Italian Job.
Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister (2017)
Dreadful
This series has been so good that it was disorienting how bad this episode was. Some reviewers want to chastise and lecture those who give it bad reviews because we are not enlightened enough to "get it". Oh, we get it, but it doesn't change our opinion that the episode was awful. Boring, unnecessary, unlikable/annoying characters, bad acting, humorless, etc. This torture was made worse by not even getting a single glimpse of characters/story that we care about. My son and I just started the show this year and have been disciplined in watching only one episode a night, but had to watch a second last night to remove the bad taste of S2:E7. The only good thing is that it made us appreciate E8 (which rocked) all the more.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Sub Rosa (1994)
Meh
Boring and ridiculous. Fully deserving of its rating as one of the worst ever. Odd that some see this episode as somehow positive for Crusher considering she was deceived, seduced, and manipulated.
An Inspector Calls (2015)
Gripping
We were drawn in and captivated from the first scene. So glad I didn't read any reviews before watching. Amazing what can be done with an excellent story, writing, directing, and acting. Not for the hyperactive video game crowd as there is no flashy action or shiny objects to keep their attention. If you like a well executed story with a twist, I can't imagine not liking this.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Cost of Living (1992)
Unwatchable
We couldn't get through this one. We usually skip Lwaxana episodes but the Netflix preview didn't let us know she was in it. So we watched awhile and she didn't disappoint; painfully annoying as usual. And the scenes on the weirdo Parallax colony on the holodeck? Yikes, even more annoying. Add in a child actor and you have a real stinker of an episode.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Loss (1990)
Unintentionally Hilarious
As has already been noted my many, this episode is marred by Troi's self-absorbed whining, but I blame the writers and not Sirtis. We the audience get the irony of the counselor dealing with something that she would normally counsel others on, but we don't need to be beat over the head with it. If the writers had used even the slightest modicum of subtlety in the way they portrayed Troi handling her loss, the episode would have been so much more effective. It's a shame because it was a concept worth exploring, but it was ruined by ham-fisted writing.
Having said that, the episode was not without entertainment value. My son and I have been re-watching the series on Netflix and we literally laughed out loud at Troi's over-the-top petulance and complete lack of self-awareness. I think my favorite may have been the meeting in the observation lounge:
LAFORGE: It's a shame we can't tell if they're sentient.
TROI: What do you mean by that?! I'm doing the best that I can!!
(Troi storms off in a huff)
But it is difficult to decide because sickbay was terrific as well:
CRUSHER: If our positions were reversed, what would you tell me?
TROI: If our positions were reversed, I wouldn't have been in here treating skinned elbows while you were lying passed out on your office floor. I'd have been there a lot sooner. Perhaps in time to prevent this from ever happening!
(Deanna storms off to her own quarters and marches in, fists clenched.)
Priceless!
We would rate this episode a solid 8 for unintended comedy, but I can't give it more than a 4 on its own merit.
The Nun (2018)
Realistic rating
Why are IMDB reviewers so extreme? Is it an attempt to balance out the other extreme? One and two stars should be reserved for movies with the absolute worst acting, writing, effects, and production values. This movie doesn't deserve that. Nine and ten stars should be reserved for the absolute best achievements in film. This film clearly doesn't deserve that either. Six seems about right at barely above average. Since the number on IMDB currently sits at 5.5, maybe the two extremist reviews do cancel either other out.
The Nun is no Conjuring/2 and here's a simple comparison: in The Nun, the nun opens her mouth wide a lot, blasts people against walls by doing so, and physically assaults people. That is supposed to be scary. In Conjuring 2, we see a dim image of the nun combined with camera motion and music...and it sends a chill of dread down the spine. That's the difference.
The Sandman (2017)
Exit Sandman...please
Woof. Bad writing, bad acting, bad effects... Just bad. And the annoying little girl wasn't trying to stop anything and didn't even act afraid. She just conjured up the Sandman to kill folks on a whim and looked like she enjoyed it. So unlikable. My sons and I did get entertainment value from making fun of it, but that's it.
