Gossip Girl (2021)
HORRIBLE Re-boot
I know the original GG had its campy moments (try every episode) but that is what made it so binge-worthy. The characters were juuuust prestigious and intriguing enough that we were kept on the hook. These teens from the reboot however....not even close. Gossip Girl worked because of the era it was in- the 2000s. Trying to recreate it with today's technology and generation is trying to hard to appeal to this day and age, and it is insulting.
Phil of the Future (2004)
15 Years Later Still a Favorite Disney
I wish this show wasn't so short-lived, but I was lucky to be watching it just at the right age when it came out. Now I'm watching on Disney Plus and I'm finding it's just as entertaining. Sure it's cheesy and campy; but looking at it from my 27-year-old perspective it's pretty well written. There are some plot holes of course but it's a Disney show, so....
I also loved the "romance" that was started since the beginning of Phil's arrival to the past, with Keely who obviously liked him from the start. This part was surprisingly NOT cheesy as Disney could have made it, so it added to the deeper plot of the show. 12 year old me would not see it, but if you're my age and have Disney I would suggest re-watching.
This was such an original idea for a show, Disney hasn't had an original idea since the 2000s so it is so refreshing to re-watch this!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
Great Story with Great Mental Health Awareness
This does contain spoilers!!
Being a person who struggles with the same kind of mental health issues Rebecca does (as later revealed) I have always found a connection with this show.
From the crazy impulsive behavior to the breakout musical songs it caught me from the first episodes. It grows deeper into the seasons, and although the songs get less catchy, the plot and the message remain clear and entertaining.
***spoiler: When Rebecca was diagnosed with BPD it was around the time I was watching and also diagnosed with the same. This show helped me keep a positive outlook on things and realize that mental health issues come in all forms.
Definitely watch this show, for the entertainment and the serious mental health undertones.
Les Misérables (2012)
Brilliant movie, overall good casting, and be prepared to be emotionally wrecked.
I saw the theater production of Les Miserables last December and fell in love with it, so I went into this movie with perhaps unreasonably high expectations. But, I was blown away by this movie; it was absolutely beautiful. The entire film was one emotion after the next; whether it was grief from Anne Hathaway's "I Dreamed A Dream" to the heartbreaking "On My Own", to the much-needed comic relief of "Master of the House". The only reason this film does not deserve a 10 is because I could absolutely not stand Russel Crowe as Javier. I've heard a lot of people criticize his voice, but for me it was more his face, he had hardly any facial expression! Perhaps it was just his portrayal of the character, but he could have done more. Everyone else was fantastic, and I left the movie feeling satisfied and heart broken.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
See this Movie. Now.
When I saw the commercial for "How to Train your Dragon" on TV, I thought to myself, "Why are they doing this? It looks so stupid." My friends finally convinced me to go see it-- and I walked out of the theater that day with a whole new mindset. It. Was. Amazing. The music was the first thing I noticed. It has a sort of Celtic, old Norse vibe, which kept the movie lively and unique. And, the character of Hiccup (played by Jay Baruchel, whom I love), well, I fell in love with him from the beginning. He's like the basic humble, clumsy guy that ends up the hero, yeah all that normal stuff. But I was really...convinced by him; he was easy to relate to, for me. And he was pretty cute, too, in an animated sort of way. And I absolutely loved Hiccup's relationship with Toothless. That dragon reminded me of my cat, so it was adorable. Although there are some critics that say that this movie copied the plot of the well loved Disney classic "Pocahontas", I say, no way! There are some similarities, but the plot remains unique and different, while still managing to be very humorous and warmhearted. It's been a long time since I've liked and animated film, and this one is definitely the most beautifully done. I might even buy it (I usually don't). So, see it! I 1000% recommend it!
Shutter Island (2010)
Shutter Island Gave me the Shudders
I'm always a person who reads the book before watching the movie. I was excited to see how Scorsese played out the ending, because the book left me utterly confused. Right when the movie started, I was like, "Oh, this is going to be intense." I mean, it opens with him being seasick, and not 10 minutes later, they are arriving at the island; the music choppy and intense. I think overall, I would have liked it more if it had more music in all, because music is part of the intensity of the plot in most movies. Leonardo DiCaprio is definitely 'easy on the eyes', but I think he could have given just a little more character to Teddy Daniels. Although, he did very well at the near-end when he discovers what his wife had done- that part gave me shivers it was so disturbing. The rest of the ending was a bit disappointing, but maybe I was just still confused. For anyone who has read the book,(though the book is better), I would recommend this film.
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (2009)
WHY are they even popular??
I would have given it 0 out of 10 if this let me. If you thought hearing them constantly on TV and the radio was enough to make your ears bleed, think again. This time, they are at it full-throttle. I can understand
why some CRAZY people would want to see this-I mean, they're nice and classy looking. But, do you really want to sit for 2 hours hearing them sing their gooey icky "rock" songs? I would sure hope not. I have a few shout-outs for them: Joe: you need to get bigger pants, Kevin: you need to quit because you are too old, and (poor guy) the only thing they let you do is play the guitar. An finally Nick: the cutest one by FAR, but please...his voice is the reason my ears were still ringing 5 hours later.
