Fun Giallo with sexy actresses, a good cast and a twist ending
31 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Fun but hard to find Giallo. Contains spoilers. The movie has a decent cast and is directed by an excellent director, Alfonso Brescia. The movie features all very attractive actors in the leading roles. The male lead is Robert Hoffman who has starred in many excellent Giallos including Death Carries a Cane, Sergio Martino's Spasmo, and many others. Robert Hoffman is an excellent leading man. He is hired to meet up with a beautiful daughter of a man who just died 1 day after taking out a 1 million dollar insurance policy. The beautiful daughter is played by Pilar Velazquez who starred in several excellent films of the time including Churchill's Leopards with Klaus Kinski and the exciting Fernando Baldi spaghetti western Forgotten Pistolero. Pilar Velazquez has a beautiful (and young looking) mother played by Irena Demick and a sexy sister played by Patrizia Adiutori. Irena Demick is best known from movies like These Magnificent Mmen in Their Flying Machines, The Visit with Ingrid Bergman, and The Sicilian Clan starring Alain Delon. Irena Demick is very attractive and she makes a play for Robert Hoffman, who is dating her daughter, Pilar Velazquez. The other sister is played by Patrizia Adiutori who looks really nice but can't seem to keep her clothes on. She is shown having soft core sex with her boyfriend. She then has a romp with our leading man Robert Hoffman (the lucky guy) and then is found dead lying outside nude. She is the title of the movie The Nude Girl in the Park. There are several twists at the end of the movie. I don't want to ruin them for you. I would recommend the movie for fans of Giallos. The movie is nothing to write home about but it isn't bad either. The good cast including Adolfo "Thunderball" Celi as the police inspector, is definitely solid and above average. The women all look great and the movie has a fun feel to it. I have only seen this available as a bootleg on DVD-r. I would really enjoy seeing an official release of this.

Last of the PRC Mike Shayne B Detective films
22 January 2012
THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!!! I just watched this on a poor quality DVD. I have been a HUGE fan of this series and have been looking for this title for 30 years. This is the last of a series of 5 movies starring Hugh Beaumont as private detective Mike Shayne. What you will notice is that the Michael Shayne of this PRC series is not hardboiled like the one from the books or the Lloyd Nolan series. This Mike Shayne is an easy going, likable, peanut eating sleuth. He is stylish and slick. He carries a gun and gets into fistfights when he has to but does not throw his weight around and threaten people like the Lloyd Nolan Shayne.

I used to have the 1st 4 of the 5 movie series on 16mm film. I sold the films off years ago and had VHS copies made of the movies. I had never seen this title and was never able to find anyone who had a copy available. I just picked up this copy from a collector in England and I have been dying to watch it for many years. I especially wanted to watch it because it featured Claire Carlton. Hugh Beaumont and Claire Carleton are 2 of my all time favorite B movie actors.

The movie starts with Hugh getting ready to go on vacation with his secretary. Many of the movies in this series start or end with Hugh Beaumont trying to leave for vacation, but unable to because of his very busy schedule. The secretary in this movie is played by the beautiful Trudy Marshall. This is the only film in the series featuring her. The secretary Phyllis was played by Cheryl Walker in 3 movies and Kathryn Adams (Hugh Beaumonts real life wife) in 1 movie. Mike Shayne gets offered a high paying job to investigate counterfeit racing tickets. Shayne receives a phone call from Mayme Martin, played by the glamorous Claire Carleton. Mayme plays a blackmailing escort. She offers Shayne some information that he will have to pay $1,000 for. Shayne sends his reporter friend Tim Rourke with the money but Mayme is found dead when Rourke gets there. Tim Rourke is in all 5 movies in the series and is played by Charles Mitchell. Charles Mitchell played the role of Rourke only 1 time with Richard Keene playing it only once (in the 1st of the series) and Paul Bryer 3 times.

This movie features Ralph Dunn as Police Detective Pete Rafferty. Dunn played Rafferty in 4 of the 5 movies and Cy Kendall played him once. Ralph Dunn is one of the highlights of the series. He is lots of fun. The movies in this series tend to run about 60 minutes and are fast paced. This movie was directed by the immortal William "1 Shot" Beaudine. It was his only film in the series, with the 1st four being directed by the great Sam Newfield. William Beaudine was a prolific B director who directed many classic B movies and series movies like Charlie Chan, Bowery Boys and also several cheesy horror movies. He is probably best know for directing Mary Pickford in the great classic SPARROWS. Uncrediited in this movie, and also uncredited in the IMDb credits of this movie is a small role of a doctor played by Selmer Jackson. It seems hard to find a PRC or Monogram movie that he doesn't seem to pop up in. He always plays a doctor, army general or police chief in low budget movies.

This movie is recommended for fans of Hugh Beaumont or fans of low budget series detective movies like Charlie Chan, Philo Vance, Mr. Wong and the like. It is definitely worth tracking down if you can find it. I would love to see a good quality copy of the movie. The copy I watched was poor quality. The big problem with finding the movie is that the movie is not in the public domain. It is not a title with enough demand for the company holding its rights to release on DVD. If you like this movie, you definitely need to get the 3 Hugh Beaumont movies PIER 23, DANGER ZONE and ROARING CITY released on DVD by VCI. They are great quality with Hugh Beaumont playing private eye Denny O'Brien. Denny O'Brien was the movie version of the fantastic Pat Novak (and also Johnny Modero) old time radio shows starring Jack Webb. I consider the radio shows as MUST HAVE. Also look for Hugh Beaumont in the classic RAILROADED.

For die-hard Joe D'amato fans only
16 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Caution-this review contains spoilers! I have to start this review stating that I am a HUGE fan of Italian horror, giallos & thrillers. I am an even bigger fan of Joe D'amato. Anthropophagus (Grim Reaper) is one of my favorite horror films. It is extremely well shot and has fantastic locations. Joe D'amato is a good director but an even better cinematographer. His movies always look slick and have great photography and locations. I spent close to 20 years trying to track this movie down on DVD/video. I was extremely interested in watching this movie because of the cast and the fact that it was shot in New Orleans. I contacted several video dealers in Italy, along with many movie collectors in Italy and could never find anyone that could get me a copy of this movie. The harder I tried to find the movie, the more I wanted it. I met a huge dealer of Italian movies, who claimed to have a copy of the movie, tell me he had the movie but could not find it in as his collection was too big. I finally gave up trying to locate the movie and then saw it on a list of movies available for $10 as a bootleg. I finally watched the movie I have been looking for for 20 years, directed by one of my favorite 1970/80's directors and here is what I thought of the movie.

The movie starts off with Margaux Hemingway looking into a room and walking out in a state of confusion/shock. She packs her bags, leaves a note for her husband and leaves. At this point, we do not know what she saw or why she left. The opening is kind of cool because it starts with a mystery. Margaux looks pretty good in this movie. She is attractive but not what I would call a super hot looking actress that you normally see in an erotic thriller. She is shot to the best of her advantage, shown wearing dark sunglasses which add sex appeal to her. She does a nude scene and I would have to say that she is pretty good in this movie for an actress of limited ability.

Margaux crosses paths with handsome actor Daniel McVicar. I had never heard of this actor until watching this movie and I would say that I was impressed with him. He is very good looking and has some style to him. It appears that he has had a decent career in Italian movies and TV. We soon find out that Daniel is hired to watch and follow Margaux. We are not sure of what Daniel is up to but we know that he is definitely keeping a close watch on Margaux. Daniel meets her as they are having dinner and they go to bed. Daniel starts to fall for Margaux and then tells her that he is a hit-man assigned to kill her. He will not kill her now that he likes her. Daniel has dealings with Appolonia, who apparently plays a call girl/escort. Daniel and Apollonia also go to bed. Apollonia appears to be a go-between for Daniel (the killer) and the person who ordered the contract on Margaux. Daniel decided not to kill Margaux, which get Apollonia into big trouble. The movie is a thriller and I will let you watch the movie to see how it ends.

As I stated earlier, I am a HUGE Joe D'amato fan. I have seen almost every movie he has ever made. I actually had the great luck to meet Joe in person many years ago at a horror convention. I have met Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, Sergio Stivelitti, Ruggero Deodato, and others, but I would have to say that I felt very lucky to meet Joe D'amato. I have to say that I was disappointed with this movie. I always wondered why it was next to impossible to find a movie directed by a very famous director and starring 2 famous glamorous actresses. Now I know why. The movie is pretty weak. On the up side, the movie is slightly stylish, Appolonia looks great, Daniel McVicar looks great, Margaux Hemingway looks good and puts in a decent performance. On the down side, the movie is not exciting and overall is not interesting. We never seem to like or care for any of the performers. The movie is pretty predictable. When you compare this movie to the countless dozens of other erotic thrilers made during this period, I would say that this is definitely below average. There is never any good suspense, no action, and really nothing to make you want to watch it again. The location shots of Mardi Gras and New Orleans do add to the film. I would not recommend this film to anyone to see unless they are big fans of Joe D'amato. I may have liked the movie a slight bit more if I was not expecting more. After watching the movie I thought I would give the movie a 3 out of 10 rating, but after thinking about the movie for many hours, I will now give the movie 4 out of 10. Apollonia is a big plus for the movie. She looks great but is not in the film very long. She does have several scenes. I would say that she is mainly eye candy, very nice looking but only a modest actress. Apollonia is best remembered today from Purple Rain with Prince. I always thought that Apollonia was a great beauty and should have had a bigger career.

Fantastic locations, solid mystery thriller.
3 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I was lucky to get an Asian import DVD of this titles with English subtitles. My DVD had fantastic resolution & excellent cinematography. I bought this DVD because it featured a screenplay by Daniele Stroppa (Wax Mask, Creepers, House of Clocks, Delirium, Killing Birds) who was a frequent writer on Joe D'amato horror movies. It also features cinematography from Daniele Massaccesi, the son of Joe D'amato, who himself was a great cinematographer. I bought this DVD not ever having know anyone who had ever seen it.

I have to say that I was presently surprised at how much I liked the film. The film is shot in Cuba and you get lots of fantastic shots of the ocean coast, beautiful old building and lots of old American convertible cars. The #1 highlight of the film was the beauty and energy of the leading lady Alma, played by Linda Batista. She is a super sexy as the wife of Nicola, a airplane pilot. The film starts with a plane crash and we assume that the pilot Nicola dies. His brother Andrea flies in from Italy to find out what has happened. He meets the beautiful widow and starts to fall for her. We as viewers try to figure out if Nicola is alive and we also run into a good looking villain and his lady cousin who appear to be connected with Nicolas disappearance. We also have the local police inspector investigating and we are treated to watching sexy Alma dancing as the headliner at the Trocadero nightclub. Alma is the kind of girl that can interest you at 1st glance.

I recommend this film but I have to say that I am a HUGE fan of Italian movies and consider this movie a solid thriller with above average location shots. This movie gives you a small glimpse of Cuba. The DVD I watched ran approx. 1 hr 45 minutes. All the main actors are very attractive looking and this is worth checking out. The movie keeps you guessing about the fate of Nicola and keeps you wondering if Andrea will end up the Alma. The police inspector is very likable and compassionate. This is definitely worth checking out if your into Italian movies.

Sexy babes and smooth performance by Jock Mahoney
2 March 2011
I watched this on DVD on an evening when I was in a bad mood, having had a hard day at work. This movie put me in a great mood after having watched it. I really enjoyed the film on many levels. This would appeal to fans of the late 40's to mid 50's crime films featuring B movie detectives. I originally bought this DVD because of Greta Thyssen and a true love for B movie detective films. I have to say that the movie was pretty good and it exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite B movie detectives is Hugh Beaumont, who aside from appearing in many classic crime films like "Railroaded", was the star of PRC series detective Mike Shayne and Lippert films Denny O'Brien (which was a filmed version of the great radio show "Pat Novak for Hire"). I bought this DVD because of the sexy Greta Thyssen and a cover featuring a picture of Jock Mahoney looking slightly similar to my favorite Hugh Beaumont. I would have to say that Jock plays the role of the detective very much like the way Hugh Beaumont played Mike Shayne in the PRC films. Jock is laid back and stylish. He is a smooth operator was is not brash and confrontational like Lloyd Nolan in the Fox Films Mike Shayne series. One scene has actor Jessie White telling Jock that he could be arrested for what his is thinking as Jock eyes up the body of their secretary.

The premise of the film has Jock playing Duke Mitchell, an insurance detective investigator, looking for another insurance detective from his company who is missing. Jock traces the missing mans last movements and finds out that he had recently spent time with 3 beautiful blonde women. All the women are very attractive including the brunette secretary at the insurance company. It is interesting to see how the body types of glamour girls have changed from the past 50 years. The glamour girls of the late 50's had lots of curves unlike the skinny models of today. The women in this movie all resemble the girls of the late 50's pinup magazines. Greta Thyssen is most remembered today as one of the top pinup stars of that era, a rival of Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren. Greta has a body type similar to Jayne Mansfield, not as busty but better looking (in my opinion).

The movie stars Jessie White who was a long time star character actor on TV and feature films. The lead Jock Mahoney is best remembered as playing Tarzan a couple of times. I read that Jock did all his own stunts in his Tarzan films. He does the same in this film. There are 2 scenes that I was surprised that he did his own stunts in this film. One scene has him falling down a flight of stairs and another scene has him crashing through a closed door to start a fight scene. Jock plays a pretty cool character. I feel that he had a fine performance. The film is nothing special but it is definitely above average for the type of film that it is. The film has beautiful women (the 3 blondes of the title and the beautiful brunette secretary) and the running mystery of who the killer is. Is the killer one of the 3 blondes or someone else? If you are a fan of low budget series detective films, this is one to watch. The film has a nice style to it and great eye candy. Greta Thyssen is known for appearing in some of the final Three Stooges comedy shorts (with the awful Joe Bessar).

The DVD is easy to find as it was released by Alpha Video. The DVD I watched starts out fuzzy and soft focus and shortly turns into a sharp transfer. It appeared to me the the opening reel was from a dupe film print and I would love to see an original transfer of the entire movie.

Rare forgotten silent comedy
20 February 2011
I saw this years ago at a silent movie theater in Michigan and they had an organ player providing the sound. I remember the movie being lots of fun. It was directed by William "One Shot" Beaudine, who had a long and varied career. He started out an important director, directing the legendary Mary Pickford in the classic Sparrows. He is mainly loved by fans of B movies for directing many low budget comedy, crime and horror films of the 40's starring the likes of Charlie Chan, Bela Lugosi and the Bowery Boys. This movie stars the beautiful Gertrude Astor, who appeared in an incrediblle amount of movies. I actually saw her in 3 different silent movies at the silent movie festival that I saw this movie at. She was very attractive and played leading ladies until she grew older, and then switched to playing mothers and grandmothers.

This movie is about the different stereotypes of the jews & irish. I haven't seen this movie for many years and I have forgotten most of the film. I do remember the highlite of the film being a scene involving a pair of apache dancers. The movie was lots of fun and I remember everyone at the theater enjoyed it. The print I saw was restored by a major museum and looked great. I have never seen this title available commercially on film, video tape or DVD. This is the only title of the series that I have seen, and I don't know if any of the other titles exist today. Please check this title out if you are a fan of lite comedies from the silent era.

Slick crime movie & great locations. Stars Gabrielle Tinti.
24 December 2010
Here is the write up from the back of the Magnum VHS video box. An international crime syndicate absconds with over $5 million in precious jewels. Police are baffled. The insurance companies are outraged. When dashing Tony Driscoll-private investigator-is called in, the robbery investigation quickly becomes a murder case. And Driscoll is suspect #1. Dodging cops as well as criminals, Driscoll steps into a subterranean world. A world of beautiful women, exotic ports and sleek fast cars. Where hunter becomes hunted-and romance is heartbeats away from death.

This is a nicely shot crime/action movie starring Gabrielle Tinti. Tinti appeared in many Italian movies of this era and was a really good leading man. He was married to the beautiful Laura Gemser, the star of the Emmanuelle Joe D'amato films. This is a must see for Gabrielle Tinti fans as he is in almost all the scenes. He plays a really cool and smooth private eye. He gets into many fights and shootouts with the bad guys. The movie will appeal to fans of 1970's Italian giallos, police action, and crime films. The best thing in the movie is the beautiful location shots of Greece. Not a great film but it has style and is a fun way to spend 90 minutes.

good cast, bad movie
25 December 2009
This movie stars Sid Haig & Ken Koree (Dawn of the Dead). The lead actress is very attractive and the outfits she wears is really the only thing that makes this movie even barely watchable. I watched this movie with several men and women who are big fans of horror movies and nobody liked it at all. I had to try and not fall asleep a few times. The main problem is that the movie is too talky, and almost all the scenes are shot in a small room. The sets are flimsy, and you can see the steel door and entire wall buckle when someone pounds on the wall.

I did not realize that Jason Connery (son of the legend Sean Connery) was in the movie until after I watched it. He is one of the good guys, the only one with a British accent. He is pretty good in this but he is not in it very much. Sid Haig is pretty creepy and Ken Foree is fun, but the movie really blows. I was shocked to see that this movie had an average of 5.0 on a 10.0 scale on IMDb. I don't know what the other people were thinking of when they saw this. The movie has the feel of one of the really low budget Full Moon Charles Band movies shot in Romania. Charles Band made a bunch of excellent movies, but this resembles one of his quickie made turkeys.

I have met Sid Haig and Ken Foree at several horror conventions and they are lots of fun and nice guys. I really like them both and am glad to see that they are still in demand. They both are a big credit to the horror genre. Unfortunately, this movie is really bad and has very little to offer. The lead actress looks sexy and is a good actress. She struts around in tight sleeveless tee shirts, showing off her nice body. If you are looking for a good horror movie, pass on this and look for something else.

Gore, Sex, and loads of FUN
25 December 2009
I first received an uncut Australian VHS tape of this when it was first released. The movie was really cool but the extras on the tape are what put this movie is the MUST WATCH category. The extras were fantastic. This movie has one of the best trailers you will ever see on a low budget horror film. The film has lots of energy and is nonstop action and horror.

The basic plot has the main 3 actors wreaking havoc on everyone they cross paths with. The 3 main actors are vampires, 1 man & 2 women. The man is pretty cool and the 2 girls are great. One of the girls is a busty sexy blond and very voluptuous. The movie has a little of everything in it, including some crime action scenes inspired from Hong Kong movies. The characters in the movie are fun. It seems that the actors in the movie had fun making the movie. There is lots of gore for the gore fans. I found the soundtrack was excellent for the movie and it had lots of energy to it.

If you are able to track this down, try and find it with the extras. The extras include an awesome trailer, interviews (really funny), and trial footage with the lead voluptuous blonde actress with dark hair. This movie also stars an actor by the name of Crawdaddy playing a bad cop. I would definitely recommend this to fans of low budget horror. The directors went on to make more cult movies.

In Chicago, a VHS tape bootlegger used to sell NTSC copies of this at horror shows in Chicago, right after this came out on tape in PAL. The dealer ran a trailer of this on a TV he had on his table. He sold out a whole box of tapes of this movies within minutes of the show opening, just off the trailer.
