Flight 666 (2018)
If you don't expect much you might be entertained.
I am a bit hard to please these days. I am 48 years old and have watched and enjoyed movies all my life.
Often I spend 30 minutes browsing on Netflix and then end up going to bed because it all looks like crap.
I stumbled over Flight 666.
Flight 666 is obviously a low budget movie, but I sometimes like low budget movies (especially from 80s) better than big billion dollar movies, because they are nothing more than CGI show cases.
I started watching Flight 666 expecting to only last 20 minutes but I watched it all and was mildly entertained throughout. Can't expect more these days :)
It must be better than Terminator Dark Fate, because I could not finish that one :)
I think it worked for me because it focused on characters even if they were not deep or anything. Acting probably wasn't the best either although I don't notice that as much as some people do.
Outside airplane effects were not good. Plane were all over the place shaking like a very light model in the wind. Not how I imagine a plane would move.
But this doesn't really matter much.
The movie is not very scary. There is the occasional jump scare which you see a mile away. Later the "scary things" are shown to much and too long which removes all sense of horror. Makeup effects were pretty good.
I recommend the movie if you are the type who can look past bad effects and set you expectations according to the budget of the movie. Maybe you have to be in the mood for it also.
If you like Marvel movies, don't bother.
Child's Play (2019)
Thought it would suck but I was surprised
I am not a fan of remakes. Especially when the original still holds up. And the original holds up. Actually I watched the original again last night and the new one tonight so both are fresh in my mind.
I did not see this one for a long time because I think that the original is perfect.
Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. It works because it is different enough from the original.
The doll is not possessed but AI gone wrong. It's less horror and more humor. It's unrealistic sci-fi and very over the top.
The original had a more tight script and 80's charm. It seems that things could be cut out in this one or pursued further.
I definitely still prefer the original. The voice of Brad Dourif is just so terrifying and Chucky is just pure evil, not "misunderstood" like in the new one.
But the remake is definitely worth a watch.
P.I.S. - Politiets indsatsstyrke (2000)
Best danish tv comedy show EVER !
This is the funniest danish TV show ever.
Each episode is one story.
The show plays like a documentary where we follow an elite police task force consisting of 3 (as far as I remember) squad members and a task force leader called Bjarne.
They are so experienced and sure of themselves that they don't really prepare enough. They just wing it.
"John Schmidt" is the team leader. He is the "classic" hero although underneath the surface he is very insecure.
"Sebastian" is the fat sniper. He is always hungry and talks about his wife a lot. He is closeminded, sexist and a racist, which makes for some funny scenes. Especially when an arab and a woman joins the squad at various points.
"Niels-Christian" is the new age hippie, smartass who never makes mistakes. Very annoying person. Self absorbed.
The team is from the very beginning increased by a new member "Niels-Christian" (the only newcomer that survives). "John Schmidt" does not like him as he threatens his position as team leader.
This is the main cause of all the problems because John does stupid dangerous stuff in order to prove that he is the best.
In one episode they visit a school (PR visit). Because the children like the Niels-Christian better John Schmidt goes berserk and careless trying to get the children to like him. This causes a teacher to get injured by a flash bang. Very funny stuff.
In subsequent episodes a new member will join. Usually a minority (woman or an arab). The squad is very scpetic of these new members, especially Sebastian and although they end up being better than the other team members they always end up dead because of the mistakes done by the rest of the team.
Then the mistake is explained away like the dead team member was to blame.
Only the danish tv show "Lykke" comes close to being as funny as this. But "Politiets indsatsstyrke" is the best !
A Boy and His Dog (1975)
I really wanted to like this.
I really wanted to like this. I know it served as inspiration of both Mad Max and Fallout. I had to see it!
I can appreciate movies with low budgets and I have no problem with the production values.
The movie is just a bit too silly for me to enjoy fully and the world is not believable. It takes place 17 years after WW4 (wait what about WW3?).
People still have normal albeit dirty clothes, canned goods, electrical power for primitive movies theaters in the middle of the dessert. In a post apocalytical world would you trade two cans of food to watch a primitive black/white nudity movie and then not even pay attention to it?
Our protagonist Vic can communicate with his dog telepathically. The dog is clever and helps him locate enemies and women to rape (?). Finding women to rape seems more important than food and survival. Vic will gladly attack bands of armed enemies to get laid even if the dog advices against it.
At some point Vic comes across a band of...people, but they are armed. They start digging a hole and while busy Vic runs over and steals a bag of food. They see him but he runs away fast. But it's a dessert. There is no where to hide. They don't even chase him. They shoot a couple of times and Vic fires back and kills a few. Then while still in view he celebrates and dances away. For some reason he does not fear being chased or shot at anymore. Strange...
Then there is a society who lives underground. This part gets even sillier. The have painted their faces white and seem to try to uphold a "normal" american society with cheerleaders and everything. They aren't very normal though. Very cartoonish and unbelievable. They cannot breed so they need someone from above ground in order to...help...with that...
Some people dislike the ending. I will not spoil the ending. But I like it. It was a little unexpected twist that made you go...woah !!!
Summer of 84 (2018)
The Burbs with kids and lack of humor
The movie feels like a cross between "Stranger Things" and "The Burbs". People mention "Disturbia" but I don't remember having seen that movie.
I like the main character but the kid group dynamic as a whole is a bit annoying. I don't get why they have to be so obsessed about sex all the time. That was not the case for me and my friends at that age. Got annoying very fast!
I had to fast forward at times because it lacked to humor that "The Burbs" had. So I felt I did not miss anything. Ok, searching the shed...Fast Foraward until something is found.....
The ending did surprise me. The tone became very different. It was almost like two movies spliced together.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Bland with boring characters...
General problems with the movie:
Boring characters with no personalities. We don't get to know them. So we don't care when they die.
Spaceship is too bright, shiny and new. Space travel is just like driving car in this movie. There is nothing to it, it seems. It lacks atmosphere. Unlike the first Alien movie this spaceship was probably brand new and made especially for this trip, so it makes sense from a storytelling point of view. But it is just not as interesting. Why did the they name the computer "mother". Every ship should have a computer with a unique name. This is just lazy.
Aliens are out in the open. Not lurking and hiding. They don't scare you because you pretty much always know when they are around. And the characters know it too.
The plot twist took me 1 second to figure out.
The origin of the xenomorphs de-mystfy them and somehow makes them less scary.
Aliens no longer seem to mimic what their hosts used to be.
Characters are less stupid than in Prometheus but still...They land on a foreign planet and immediately they decide to split up. Cliché much? And lets not bother with masks or space suits. There are probably no diseases here, right.
Back at the drop-ship one of the female crew panics and locks another female in the medical room because of fear of spreading the disease. But she had her face covered with blood of the sick dude. And she did not even wipe it off. So much for that fear. Even if she was doing it out of fear it was very irrational. When the locked in female was attacked by the alien could she be more ineffective with that knife? Lesson: No women in space! :)
And then there is a shower scene where two crew members ignore the horror around them an decide to have sex. Like a Friday the 13th movie they get brutally murdered. Not by Jason but by an alien who entered the shower room undetected. They had sex without locking the door? And we have to see a tit before they are killed - obviously. A little treat for the young folks.
Why was the "Engineer"-people's settlement built of stone and resembled something from ancient Rome?
The scene where the Riply-wannabe woman was hanging of the spaceship battling the alien....sigh....ridiculous.... The pilot was against extending the crane because it made the spaceship unstable. But I seem to remember that his flying was not exactly up to par before that. Bouncing around like an idiot.
Why is it impossible to make good movies nowadays !???
1979 Alien 1980 Empire strikes back 1982 Bladerunner 1982 The Thing 1983 Return of the Jedi 1984 The Terminator 1985 Back to the Future 1986 The Fly 1986 Aliens 1987 Robocop 1987 Predator 1989 The Abyss
What a f...... decade!!!? And I probably forgot one or two. Movies today a trash.
Mr Calzaghe (2015)
Pretty much what you would expect.
I got the Blu-ray for Christmas.
If you are a fan of boxing or Calzaghe you should watch this. No debate about that. Boxing is not the same anymore.
That said there is nothing really surprising about this documentary.
It focuses a lot on the father/son relationship. You see Enzo talking about how he gave up his music and became a trainer.
We see clips of a young Calzaghe in his amateur days. And we see clips of the most meaningful fights of his career and Joe talks a little about each fight. A few buildup clips are shown too (God, I hate that Hopkins guy).
It felt like it could have been longer. It felt slightly rushed. It should have shown more buildup and post fight interviews. It was mentioned that the no-loss record was a psychological problem for Joe. The stress of keeping the 0. But nothing from Joe's own mouth. We did not get enough of his inner thoughts. Who is Joe Calzaghe as a person?
Oh those little cute kids of his? Not so little anymore. Time flies...
The extras was fun for me as a Dane because it features Mikkel Kessler. They show a lengthy clip of Joe and Mikkel watching and commenting their fight and playing ping pong. That was good fun. I think it is great that you can fight professionally and still be friends. No need for this Hopkins gangster s... Damn, Kessler looked like Ivan Drago in their fight.
Time to end this review. Final verdict. You gotta have it! You know you do!
