Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Try it...you may love it!
If you haven't seen this movie, just get it! Chances are good you will love it; if you don't you will still probably consider it to be good entertainment for an evening. I recommend buying the DVD because you will want to watch it several times. I left the theater with a smile and a feeling that I had just seen something special. What fun! What an Oscar-worthy performance by Johnny Depp! While I was waiting for the DVD, I watched or rewatched most of Johnny's other films. This has been rewarding, because I have found that they are generally well done and interesting. And Johnny IS a great actor! These movies aren't "blockbusters"; I suppose that's why it didn't seem like he got the recognition before Pirates. I especially enjoyed Benny and Joon, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Donnie Brasco. Johnny deserved an Oscar for Pirates because he created a unique character and brightened a day (or many days) for millions of people. I check these reviews from time to time and I can see that many other people have similar thoughts and feelings. But I am compelled to add my comments, because people still keep questioning why some of us love this movie! Number 1, Johnny, an outstanding performance by a uniquely talented man, but there are other reasons to like or love this movie. The other performances were good, too. (Orlando, Keira, Geoffrey, and dozens of others in smaller roles) The plot was not boring, had not been done before. The first time you watch it you may think it doesn't make sense. So watch the DVD a couple of times, then watch it with the writers' comments. That will help a lot. If you still think it's a weak plot...well, that's OK. You'll still enjoy the spirit, the music, the dialog, the makeup, the swordfights, the ships, the monkey, the treasure, the island, and the references to the Disney ride.
Blue Ridge Fall (1999)
puzzling
I missed the very beginning so maybe I missed something. I would appreciate any answers. I watched this mainly because the story was supposed to be fairly close to where I live. But I couldn't relate to much about this story, setting, or people. Is there any town in NC like this? When was this supposed to have taken place? Recently? Where do they drive 15 year old police cars and 25 year old trucks? Or was it supposed to be early 1980's? Did WCU have an African American football coach back then? I think it's important to know the era, because of the racial sub-theme.
Changing Lanes (2002)
Save your money. My rating is 3/10.
I became a registered user so I could comment on this one. My family was hoping the incredibly stupid Affleck character would get hit by a bus. And the Jackson character lost all credibility when, after being unfairly treated by a judge, he rebuffed the hot-shot LAWYER who was practically squealing, "I'll be your best friend!"
If I hadn't paid money to rent the DVD I would have stopped watching. The ending was somewhat redeeming but I won't watch this one again. One more thing: I didn't think it deserved an R-rating. Which was a good thing, because I did let my teenagers watch it with me.
