Interceptor (2022)
It's a good fun B popcorn flick.
Yes it's not a blockbuster as every movie nowadays has to be and some of it is a bit schlocky but it's a decent fun watch. It's like a throw back to 60's drive-in movies where you can just switch off your brain and be entertained. It's not high art and it knows it. The story flows along nicely if you can just turn off your inner cynic and couch critic. Just strap in for the ride.
Earthling (2010)
Starts out strong but ends up... what?
Earthling starts out as an intriguing film. We're left to begin piecing together the disjointed bits of storytelling to begin this fantastic sci-fi journey. After about an hour we're still being teased with disjointed information and characters who know what they're doing but unfortunately forgot to tell us the viewer what they're doing. They act with meaning and motivation but there is no clear reason why they are acting and talking the way they are. It's all very well to be mysterious and aloof but frankly i got lost and ending up not caring what they were doing. It's like the director watched too many David Lynch films and tried to outdo him. In the end i got it but i really didn't care. It went from strong, to confusing to will this please end. The only saving grace was the lead actor, she was brilliant but even towards the end you could just see her delivering lines and probably wondering what the hell was going on too. It's nice to evoke feelings and emotions in film but at the end of the day it's about entertainment. It wasn't there.
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009)
Trailer is way better than actual film
This is definitely the film to see drunk with a few mates. Yeah it's pretty lame but what the heck... it's also a lot of fun. Suspend all belief and go with the schlock. The effects are pretty woeful but that's what makes it fun. Unfortunately the editing of all the major action is done so quickly that you don't get a chance to revel in it's outrageousness. Just when the creatures do something really cool like bite the Golden Gate bridge the scene cuts to something else. I want more from my "millions of years trapped in ice giant monsters of the deep." You also get the feeling that all involved know exactly what a pile of B grade celluloid they're turning out. Two thing I've learnt however is next time i fly I'll be looking out for massive leaping sharks and never call an octopus a squid. Surprisingly Debbie Gibson is really good... not as an octopus but as an actor. I'm now a fan. I can't wait for the sequel. It rises...
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
such liberties
Where oh where do the liberties come in making this a love story? Bram Stoker's novel is a diary account of the main characters. The count is only a secondary character who has set the wheels of motion in action. This is the story of Johnathan Harker and his love Mina. Van helsing is portrayed in the movie as an eccentric by Anthonty Hopkins. What bumpkin. Van helsing was a man of honour and integrity as all the well devised characters are in the novel. They are all three dimensional except for the count who is really inconsequential to this soap-opera story. Gary Oldman, an excellent actor, totally overplays the count to the point of misrepresentation. Dracula is a novel of Victorian manners more attuned to a Jane Austen story rather than anything Hollywood or Hammer has ever come close to. The true horror of Dracula is it's misinterpretation for over 100 years than any re-imagining that has ever occurred. Read the novel and discover the real human story contained within, rather than the crap fed to you by Hollywood.
