Meet Dave (2008)
Disappointed in Eddie Murphy
I remember when the Beatles were so popular that they started putting out any garbage they wanted. They knew that since it came from the Beatles that everyone would buy it -- and they did. Much of their last music was pure crap.
Eddie Murphy seems to be going this way. He has had some really good family movies before. He has shown he is a first-class entertainer, so much so that I would watch a movie with him in it because he was in it. No longer.
The story line of this film is weak and the acting weaker.
We rented this movie from a $1.00/night vending machine. I want my money back.
The Man Without a Country (1937)
Not based on fact
I was about nine years old the last time I saw this film. I am in my late 50's now. It was shown in elementary schools to foster patriotism during the 1950's. I cannot comment on the film itself or its qualities as too many years have passed.
I can say, however, that it is not factual. Wikipedia.org says this about the story that the film was based on: "The Man Without a Country was a short story published anonymously by Edward Everett Hale, in the Atlantic Monthly in 1863. Although the events of the novel were set in the early 1800s, the story was an allegory and implicitly referred to the upheaval of the American Civil War..." We were also shown films such as "Reefer Madness" about the same time. I would put this film in somewhat the same category. Its purpose is to present an agenda rather than to entertain. Certainly not a fault in itself, but see this as an editorial on celluloid.
Knocking (2006)
Is Faith Enough?
I think if you were to ask most JW's whether they expect a miracle cure because of their faith, you will find they do not. I know I do not. What you will find instead is that they believe the promises Christ made of a resurrection. So, even even if the worst were to happen and we die while holding onto our integrity, Jehovah can, and will correct this.
It really gets down to a simple question: is God real to you or is this all just make believe? If he is real, and you trust him, you will follow his directions no matter what the short term outcome may be.
I had a heart attack about a year and a half ago. One in my family was horrified when she saw the words "NO BLOOD" written in large letters over my chart. I reasoned with her that if I were in a position that only a blood transfusion would save my life, would that be a good time to anger the only one could return me to life when the time came? She didn't get it -- God just isn't real enough to her. Too bad. I wish she could have the comfort a strong faith gives.
